British rock guitarist Alvin Lee, a member of the band Ten Years After, has died aged 68. His family announced on his official website that he unexpectedly died on 6 March following complications during routine surgery. The Nottingham-born musician rose to fame after appearing at the Woodstock festival in 1969. The band, who had eight Top 40 albums in the UK, had their biggest hit in 1971 with I'd Love To Change the World. "We have lost a wonderful and much loved father and companion, the world has lost a truly great and gifted musician," said the statement from his wife and daughters.

Comments:

Tax the rich, feed the poor
Till there are no rich no more
I´d love to change the world
But I don´t know what to do
So I´ll leave it up to you..

Somehow, I suspect this guy would appeal to many on this site. I include myself.

The juiceboxers are saying "Who is Alvin Lee?"

complications during routine surgery

I presume this was under the socialized medicine in the UK? When I worked in London, my company paid for insurance so I could visit private doctors. They said they didn´t want me at the mercy of their socialized medicine. So we paid twice for my medical coverage.

Spent many a day in my youth (and not a few nights in my later years) working on getting the right feel for those licks - the intro to ´´I´m Going Home´´ live at Woodstock is still electrifying. Man could do some serious barrelhouse rock-n-roll with TYA.

R.I.P. Alvin

From his web site: "unforseen complications following a routine surgical procedure".

Did he die in England? Is he a victim of careless socialized medicine practices? There are plenty of socialized medicine horror stories coming out of the UK -- just as there will be here in the USA.

"I´d Love to Change the World" was one of the first songs I learned on acoustic guitar. Pretty simple chords played in step up arpeggios: E-minor, G, A-minor, C, B7. Even today I use it as a warm up before moving to more difficult material.

One I particularly remember from early 1969´s Stonedhenge was "Speed Kills" (link below) with its train moving from the left channel to the right channel, then Alvin´s electric guitar doing the same. Ten Years After was a very good band.

Heavy siiiigh. Much of my teenage years was as a neighborhood groupie for a reeeeeally good garage band who covered TYA among others. Alvin Lee, et al never did much top 40 but as I learned young - never confuse popular with talent. Something very lost on much of the populace these days.

I will really miss his guitar playing...man, I´m bummed! Saw him with Brownsville Station and BB King, great concert...saw them several more times..still cant believe this..life is slipping by too fast.

"Juiceboxers". Man that´s funny. Lee had a cool tune called "Rock and Roll Music to the World".
I feel sorry for musicians and listeners today. They really have it harder than the pioneers of rock, trying to come up with something "new under the sun".

From the way he slurred "I´m going home...by helicopter" at Woodstock, I thought he had to be very drunk. And then proceeded to shred like few have ever shredded. An amazing guitarist.

RIP Alvin Lee.

Dang, heard about this last night listening to XM. Saw him in the mid 70´s with TYA. Three on the bill w/ TYA headlining. The guy was Peter Frampton, who was on his ´´Comes Alive´´ tour.

Played until 1AM, with my mom waiting in the lobby at Hara Arena for the show to finish.

Saratoga - If it hadn’t been for a politician having a little free time to explore his interest in history, an important local historical site might have been lost.[Snip]The grassy knoll, which is about one mile south of Schuylerville, was the place where Gen. John Burgoyne surrendered his sword to Gen. Horatio Gates to end the 1777 Battles of Saratoga. In 1927, a state historical marker was erected to mark the site, although the land had been in private hands since the Revolutionary War. The spot where the 6,000-member British Army laid down their arms is said to be at the park at Fort Hardy.

WASHINGTON — The State Department has hired an alarming number of law-enforcement agents with criminal or checkered backgrounds because of a flawed hiring process, a stunning memo obtained by The Post reveals. The background problems are severe enough that many of the roughly 2,000 agents in State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security can play only limited roles in agency efforts to police bad conduct and prosecute wrongdoers. The problems in the bureau are the latest revelation in an exploding scandal that also involves accusations that members of former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s security detail

At a Thursday press conference, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi condemned a bill that would prohibit abortions during the final four months of pregnancy with exceptions for when the life or physical health of the mother was at stake. Asked what the moral difference is between what Dr. Kermit Gosnell did to babies born alive and aborting those same infants moments before birth, Pelosi refused to answer. "As a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground to me when we talk about this," Pelosi said. "This shouldn´t have anything to do with politics."

All four Republican members of the bipartisan Gang of Eight immigration group voted for Majority Leader Harry Reid’s, D-Nev., motion to table the Grassley amendment. Sen. Washington- Syria has crossed a "red line" with its use of chemical weapons, including the nerve agent sarin gas, against rebels, a move that is prompting the United States to increase the "scale and scope" of its support for the opposition, the White House said Thursday. The acknowledgment is the first time President Barack Obama´s administration has definitively said what it has long suspected -- that President Bashar al-Assad´s forces have used chemical weapons in the ongoing civil war. "The intelligence community estimates that 100 to 150 people have died from detected chemical weapons attacks in Syria

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush (R) argued Wednesday that the United States should pass immigration reform because the U.S. economy needs the labor of young immigrants, and immigrants are “more fertile.” “Immigrants create far more businesses than native-born Americans,” Bush said at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to the Majority conference. “Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population. Immigrants create an engine of economic prosperity.” Bush said immigrants are an advantage that the United States has over China, Europe and Japan, which don’t have the same
