WASHINGTON - The U.S. government shut down on Wednesday ahead of a fierce snowstorm packing heavy, wet snow that had blanketed the Midwest, leaving thousands without power and forcing hundreds of flights to be canceled. Washington could get slammed by its biggest snowfall in as much as two years, with 6 inches to 12 inches (15 cm to 30 cm) expected after the storm moved eastward into the mid-Atlantic states, the National Weather Service said. The government, already hit by $85 billion in overall budget cuts that took effect last Friday, ordered 375,000 federal workers in the Washington area

Remember the government shutdown in 1994-95? One day after the government re-opened, DC was hit by a storm which dropped over 2 feet of snow. It was hilarious - it was as if God was saying, "You think that you´re so important and powerful? Watch this!" DC was closed for another 5 days while everyone dug out.

A man staying at Justin Bieber´s home was arrested on narcotics charges during the execution of a search warrant today by the Los Angeles County Sheriff´s Department. Officers saw cocaine in plain sight and arrested the guest, police said at a news conference. Bieber was not arrested and police said the singer was not connected to the drugs other than the person was staying at his home. The cocaine was unrelated to the police search looking for evidence that Bieber was involved in an egg-throwing incident last week. The singer was also not arrested nor exonerated of the felony vandalism

When much of North America was caught in the grip of unusually cold weather in early January, images of ice-encased lighthouses on Lake Michigan and hunched, bundled pedestrians crunching along snowy sidewalks elsewhere brought hoots from some circles asking "where is global warming?" (Snip) Social scientists have long recognized a tendency for many people to base their views on global warming at least in part on what they see outside the window, even at the time they are asked for their opinion. Mystery in lower jobless rate: Why

WASHINGTON - The US unemployment rate fell significantly in December, but the big reason for the shift isn’t necessarily a comforting one for the economy. The jobless rate dropped to 6.7 percent of the work force, the lowest level since October 2008. But the shift came only partly because unemployed people were finding work. Rather, the main driver of the change was people who exited the labor force by ceasing to look for work. And this wasn’t a one-month anomaly. Rather, the trend of people opting out of the labor force has become a post-recession norm. “To me, the most troubling

"Surprise! Kentucky health exchange networks may exclude your hospital," reads one recent headline in the Louisville Courier Journal. Or, as Time magazine puts it, "Keeping your doctor under Obamacare is no easy feat." Behind these stories lurks a policy idea that´s central to Obamacare´s approach to controlling costs, but anathema to many health-care consumers: "Narrow networks." Just the name itself, a narrow network, sounds like a miserable, restrictive health plan that you would just as well avoid. But health-care experts love narrow networks, pointing out that they underpin some of the country´s most successful health plans. So what´s a narrow

As the smoke settles from the first week of legal marijuana sales in Colorado, experts are warning that sanctioned pot dealers could become targets for the very folks they put out of business. One veteran border narcotics agent told FoxNews.com Colorado´s legal pot industry will find it hard to keep the criminals from horning in on a lucrative business they once controlled.
