The defeat of Senator Talent in a close 2006 election is a matter of highest regret. He was replaced by the obnoxious, liar, tax cheat clair mccaskill (sp?) who poses as a moderate but is an obama bootlicking liberal. We have to endure another 6 years of mccaskill because her 2012 opponent is an idiot ideologue.

Same as most commerce in America, Defense should be able to benefit from technology. Meaning, budget cuts should be done.

Anyway, the country is going broke. If we are broke, no defense will be possible.

We need an independent audit of every government agency and program. If you don´t know where the waste and fraud are you will never get a handle on it. We have let politicians bleed the taxpayer dry. It is time to pay the piper. You have committed ongoing theft by fleecing American taxpayers to fund pet projects, hostile governments, and by throwing billions away to special interests. We need accountability! If American families have to sit down and trim the fat, so should Washington.

We can always fall back and rely on the well-armed citizenry! When the enemy comes and gets the paperwork that discloses who and where we are and how deep is our love for home and family--they will fear and tremble! Honestly, none of us think the government capable of defending our people any longer.

I would agree that streamlining is a great goal, as is the case with the private sector.But I don´t have to ponder very long to calculate how much bang for our buck this country is getting from the Dept of Energy , to name just ONE useless slugfarm.
There really is no excuse to focus on gutting our defense. DHS has been hiring new employees at the of 10 per hour since its inception in 2002. Quite ironic that protecting our borders by land , sea and air is, was and always has been the definition of ´providing for the common defense´.

DHS isn´t protecting anyone. I´m convinced that zippy has turned them into his "civilian security force, as powerful and well funded as the military". The question is, when zippy orders them to fire on their fellow citizens, will they do it?

Years ago, it became obvious that some military bases needed to be shut down. Of course, that would cause pain to people who depended on those bases. No one wanted to choose which ones would close.
So, a large panel was chosen and their decisions were final. We need panels to review every Dept. within the government and shut down a great many of the redundant, useless ones. EVERY Dept. must be scrutinized.

If that graph showed zero to 500 - the true nature of the cuts would be illustrated. But, this Graph Axis shows only 400 to 500 so the cuts look gargantuan.

I´m in favor of a strong defense, however; much of the useless things they spend money on (listed by Sen Coburn) are very wasteful. They should eliminate all the inane stuff and then will have enough money for the important stuff, like ships, etc.
