TSA to allow small knives, sporting gear on planes

| For the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, federal airport screeners will allow passengers to carry onto a plane small knives, as well as golf clubs, hockey sticks and pool cues. The policy change, which will take effect April 25, was immediately criticized by flight attendants, who say the move will create an unnecessary risk and further crowd the already limited space in the overhead bins. "While we agree that a passenger wielding a small knife or swinging a golf club or hockey stick poses less of a threat to the pilot locked

Comments: As Arte Johnson once said, "Very interesting!" I hear the feds will allow two (2) golf clubs as carry on accessories. For me, those would be my heavy bladed sand wedge, capable of caving Mohammed Atta´s freaking skull in one swipe. The back up implement would be my 1-iron, which I would immediately break just below the hosel and use the sharp end of the broken shaft as a sword. Terrorist-ke-babs!

Well it´s about time! Any self-respecting man should be ashamed to be caught out without a pocket knife.
If I had my way, I´d get rid of the TSA lock, stock and barrel, then let the airlines and their insurance companies decide how best to provide security on their own planes.

Read the article...everyone. Please.
Take a look at the knife that is pictured...and tell me you think it is a smart idea to allow those on a plane your kids or parents might be flying on.
That knife is one heck of a lot more dangerous than the box cutters the Muslim terrorists used on 9-11-2001.
But heck..the TSA will now have expensive non-sequester uniforms they can wear when they let future terrorists on the planes with such knives.

#4, that knife is longer than their ´2.36 inches long´ allowance. But if everyone may have a knife, that sort of takes away the advantage the 9/11 hijackers had when everyone (except them) was disarmed by the feeble-minded feds.

Can the CBO give us figure for the TSA dollars spent per terrorist caught? And please also estimate the dollars cost in citizen´s lost time and stolen valuables at checkin. And, just out of curiosity, the dollars rechanneled to the DNC from TSA SEIU dues.

for well over 20 years before 9/11 I traveled with tools, pocket knife and a leatherman, the buck knife was occasionally questioned but no one ever took a second look at the leatherman on my belt (with two rather nasty blades) - since then I find I loose something from my checked bag a few times a year

Why couldn´t a terrorist just go into the bathroom and crack a mirror and come out with a "weapon?" Aircraft lavatory mirrors are probably shatter-resistant, but that doesn´t mean they are shatterproof.

Very poor reporting from the LA Times. Other articles have reported that the width of the small pocket knife must be less than 1/2" at its widest point. Box cutters are still forbidden, as are knives with molded handles, whatever that means. The knife in the picture with the article is not allowed.
Airlines don´t allow canes to be kept by the seats - they must be in the overheads, and I´m sure the golf clubs would have to be retrieved from there also to take a swing.

The obvious priorities are cockpit security and screening for explosives. Of these, cockpit security is several orders of magnitude the most important. If the cabin is secured, shooting up the passengers with an AK-47 would, while deplorable, be no different than committing the same massacre on the ground. The same goes for blowing up the plane with all on board.
The essential, imperative thing is to prevent the aircraft from being commandeered and converted into a guided missile. Nothing could be simpler. All that is required is an impenetrable cockpit door and a strictly defined protocol about opening it. 9-11 would not have happened if the hijackers knew in advance they stood no chance of entering the cockpit and taking control of the aircraft.
There would be no sense in going to all the trouble to pay for airline tickets and catching a plane just to massacre Americans in a confined space 30,000 feet above the ground.
I am assuming that current policy is that doors to the cockpit are specially constructed, reinforced, and impenetrable to anything, including small explosives, that might be smuggled aboard an aircraft. I am also assuming that pilots are under strict orders not to unlock the cabin except under very clearly defined and absolutely verified circumstances.

The hit HBO series "Girls," which is wildly popular with 20-something audiences, is also notorious for its frank portrayals of the dark side of the casual-sex culture reigning among America´s young adults. In the first season of the show, the main character, Hannah (played by Lena Dunham), finds herself in a dysfunctional relationship with an actor, Adam, whom she regularly sleeps with but isn´t dating in the traditional sense. She really likes him, though, so she asks him one day, during intercourse, "You want me to call you?" His response is to push her head down into a pillow.

Just over a week ago, they were two little boys living with their grandparents and their family dog, Nati, in Tampa, Florida. That was then. First, police say Chase and Cole Hakken´s father broke into the home and tied up the boys´ grandmother before whisking the two children away -- just a day after he and the boys´ mother officially lost their parental rights. The 2- and 4-year-old boys ended up sailing to Cuba with their parents, triggering an international manhunt that ended this week. Chase and Cole are now back in Tampa, trying to resume their life with Nati

TAMPA — Federal and local officials have released little information Tuesday on the Hakken family, which reportedly was in Cuba on Monday. But CNN is reporting that one of its journalists in Cuba spoke to Joshua and Sharyn Hakken, who say their boys, ages 2 and 4, are fine. El Nuevo Herald, the Spanish-language newspaper affiliated with the Miami Herald, said Monday night that it had confirmed that the Hakkens were in the custody of Cuban immigration officials and were being attended to by U.S. consular officials. On Tuesday, CNN reported that Joshua and Sharyn Hakken were seen

On Friday, authorities said the man who kidnapped his young children Wednesday is likely with his family on a 25-foot sailboat. And though the seas were choppy during Thursday´s storms, deputies say 35-year-old Joshua Hakken knows how to sail. Surveillance video even recorded him loading supplies onto the boat Wednesday, indicating the escape was planned. The U.S. Coast Guard and state marine units were scouring the water Friday. The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia has recently decreed that all churches in the Arabian Peninsula must be destroyed. “The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia is the most senior and most influential Sunni Muslim religious and legal authority in Saudi Arabia … His main role is to give opinions (fatwas) on legal matters and on social affairs. The Saudi court system is heavily influenced by the opinions of the Grand Mufti.” The Grand Mufti seems to have missed President Obama’s “New Beginning” Cairo speech. On that occasion the newly elected President showcased his personal knowledge of that faith.

In my Weekly Standard cover story about the fallout from the “Climategate” email scandal three years ago, I offered the following question by way of prediction: Eventually the climate modeling community is going to have to reconsider the central question: Have the models the IPCC uses for its predictions of catastrophic warming overestimated the climate’s sensitivity to greenhouse gases? (Snip) A Washington-based Economist correspondent admitted to me privately several years ago that the senior editors in London had mandated consistent and regular alarmist climate coverage in its pages. The problem for the climateers is increasingly dire.

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

The state of California is reportedly considering legislation that would force group insurance policies to provide infertility treatment for gay and lesbian couples. Two men who have sex with each other for a year and do not produce a baby would be considered “infertile” under the proposed legislation. So would two women having sex. Since biology does not allow those without a uterus to conceive or those without a penis to impregnate, every year-long gay couple in California would potentially be covered by this new provision of California law.
