Learning: ´Fat letters´
from school a slap in face

Asbury Park Press, by Francesca Cocchi

It’s an evaluation from your child’s school, but it’s not the kind of report card you were expecting. A Massachusetts school sent home letters in the mail that used body mass index testing to determine weight class percentiles for students, according to a report by Boston Fox affiliate WFXT. The letter labels students as underweight, of a healthy weight, overweight and obese. Cameron Watson, a 10-year-old North Andover athlete and student, fell into the obese category after the screening, according to WFXT. His mother Tracy Watson, told WFXT last week that she was offended by the “fat letter”

First, ´Fat Letters´ and next will come the ´Special Education´ camps for people who do not fit the exact model of ´Perfect Citizen´. Strange how so-called liberals become our overseers so quickly, isn´t it?

But hey, let´s throw even more money at the schools so they can do more things like this. It´s for the children, ya know.

I think it is silly if the response from the parent is "not my Johnny." Parents come from all cultures, and what is fat to one is "just right" to another. Still, it is unhealthy for a child to weigh too much. It is a lot easier to get a kid on board with healthy eating and habits at a young age, rather than trying to lose weight as an adult.

The letters could avoid the "O" word to keep from offending the delicate sensibilities of the parents. Maybe a letter saying that an optimal BMI for little Johnny´s height and weight is X, and his actual BMI is Y. Then a message to contact the child´s pediatrician for further information about diet and exercise.

Parents want to be their kids´ good buddies these days, instead of barking orders about getting their fat rumps outside and away from the video games. It is ironic how they expect the schools to do everything from daycare to counseling, but a nurse doing her job is said to be overreaching.

Rock on! And in the spirit of academic perfectionism...

...I hereby move that all teachers and administrators who fit that ´FAT´ category...

...be immediately suspended until such a time as their *appearance* does not present a bad example for Obama-kinder.

I particularly got a kick out of Michelle´s recent admonition to ´watch your pet´s weight´. Is there *any* aspect of busybody totalitarianism that governments - down to the clique at your local schools - doesn´t think they´re endowed by their ´superior positions´ to demand support for?

God help us when the acne letters start going out! At least mail ´em and give USPS a boost from their government created problems...

I´d return to sender with the response that my child´s body mass index is none of their business and any correspondence on the subject of his or her physical attributes is highly inappropriate.

We have a doctor and you´re not him.

I agree. The response from the parents should be ´´not your business.´´

Medications to treat certain illnesses can have a side effect of packing on the pounds. Imagine the parent of a child with kidney disease or a psychiatric disorder controlled via medication getting one of these letters!

I´ve known parents dealing with each of these in their children. What a slap in the face that society sees ´fat´ as unhealthy...when, in some cases, the medicine causing that fat is keeping the child alive.

Reply 10 - Posted by: DARling, 3/5/2013 1:55:21 PM     (No. 9209648)

Sorry for a second post.

When I was a kid, we were weighed and had fitness testing twice a year at school. We also had daily P.E. classes and particpated in that JFK-attibuted fitness competition each year. Never could do a pull up.

School nurses are usually advised of the medical conditions of the students, and often administer the medication at school. I doubt the nurse would be insensitive to the feelings of parents who already have too much on their plates (sorry for the pun).

I know two school nurses who are the most caring, decent professionals I´ve ever met. Parents are the ones who are falling down on the job by not cooking at home and setting an example for their kids.

I was actually scolded by another parent when I said that if my kids asked for a snack half an hour before dinner, I´d say no. "What, your kids have to ask permission for a snack?" I saw the woman´s tubby child grazing on chips and soda before dinner once, and the mom said nothing. Parents are paying taxes for the nurses´ expertise, so why not use it, especially since the parents seem to be afraid to tell their kids they have problems with their weight.

Kids already have enough problems with being bullied at school and self-respect issues at that age. Sure, let`s rub it in that they`re too fat too so when the next kids shoots up a school because of govn bullying - well, you get the idea.

We live in a land run by morons.

My grandson got a "fat" letter. He is a muscle bound athlete who is hard as a rock and totally fit and has very little fat on him. He asked his coach what was going on and was told that the BMI ratings can´t tell the difference between fat and muscle and to ignore it. So much for one size fits all.

We started to see more obesity problems when they took mandatory PE classes out of a schools. That, coupled with increase in video gaming and other sedentary pursuits for our kids. BMI is not the best indicator of health. On some kids, the extra weight is muscle, not fat. I like the idea of mandatory 3- mile runs for students and teachers three times a week. Lead by example.

Reply 19 - Posted by: kono, 3/5/2013 3:25:30 PM     (No. 9209806)

This is, indeed, over the top.

But if they think they´re offended by this, just wait ´til these letters include notice that they will be required by force of law to meet ´healthy´ BMI levels by a certain date, under threat of fine, jail, or loss of custody to CPS...

Compared to what Obamacare will become by the time they´re fully implemented, these sorts of affronts will seem like "the good old days".

Teaching kindergartners about homosexuality, allowing the students to declare their gender, regardless of genitalia, passing out contraceptives without parental approval and now this. Too bad the insane asylum of MA can´t focus on teaching their children reading, writing and arithmetic.

All I heard growing up was how skinny I was. ( A good friend of mine was hounded all the time about how fat he was.) I heard it from teachers, kids, and bystanders that "just wanted to help". You know what, I didn´t need anyone´s "help". Just because I was thin, I was made to feel like I was abnormal. I didn´t put on weight until my 20s, because, duh, that was how my metabolism worked.

Schools need to focus on learning. Leave kids´ bodies alone, and the collective nannies should shut their piehole about what is "normal" weight.

#20, they must focus to some degree on teaching reading and math. Massachusetts is the top-scoring state in those areas.

For the record, North Andover, where the fat letters were deployed, is an affluent, Republican-leaning town. When I was there last fall, the Romney and Brown signs were thicker on the ground than the fallen autumn leaves.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

Margaret Thatcher had more impact on the world than any woman ruler since Catherine the Great of Russia. Not only did she turn around—decisively—the British economy in the 1980s, she also saw her methods copied in more than 50 countries. "Thatcherism" was the most popular and successful way of running a country in the last quarter of the 20th century and into the 21st. Her origins were humble. Born Oct. 13, 1925, she was the daughter of a grocer in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham. Alfred Roberts was no ordinary shopkeeper.
