| OAKLAND, Calif. — In recent months, journalists covering crime and other stories here have themselves become victims of crime, robbed of expensive cameras, sometimes at gunpoint. In less than a year, every major television news station in the Bay Area has been a victim, some more than once. One experienced newspaper photographer has lost five cameras. In the most brazen episode, a group of men punched a KPIX-TV cameraman last November while he was filming at midday in front of an Oakland high school. The robbers fled with his camera while it was still recording.

If Californians wanted Oakland to be different, it would BE different. Same with New Falujah (Detroit) and Chicago. Apparently the mayhem works for those places.
I say start with refusing to display the coverage. Oh, cover it with cameras rolling, but refuse to put it on air. The 15 minutes of fame is what most of the thugs are waiting for. (Something they can display on Facebook!)

I worked in Oakland for a number of years. The building we worked in had bullet holes in it, and we had some theft as well, but one of the more unusual things was a person, late at night, would occasionally change oil in our parking lot without an oil collection pan, just drain oil on the pavement, push the car up a little, install drain plug, new oil, and drive off. Strange bizarre place! Was glad to get out of there.

Oakland police are like a lot of big city police. If the situation is dangerous, they avoid it and are nowhere to be found for hours. If it looks like an easy bust of an individual (prostitution or simple drug deal or drug user) they will pile on like flies.

#3 - The ´voters´ did get it, that´s why they moved out. Those remaining may vote or someone else manages to make sure that there is a vote. You know, all those citizens take such pride in the voting privilege that precincts are near or above 100% - when the state-wide average is 50-60%.

This has been my opinion for some time. Take away the red camera light and half the riots all over the world would likely go away. Much of it is posturing for the camera.

VALLEJO, Calif — A California man once sentenced to death for killing two people in the 1960s was under arrest Thursday after police said he led officers to the body of his 89-year-old mother. Investigators said Dennis Stanworth, 70, called Vallejo police just before noon Wednesday and said he had killed his mother at his home. Stanworth led officers to the body of Nellie Turner Stanworth. Investigators wouldn´t say how she was killed. Lt. Jim O´Connell said in a news release that Stanworth was arrested for investigation of murder and booked into the Solano County Jail.
