Keystone XL gets blessing from U.S.
State Department, clears major hurdle

Calgary Herald [Canada], by James Wood & Dan Healing

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 3/1/2013 6:26:05 PM

The American government is making no final conclusion yet on the proposed Keystone XL pipeline but says that the fate of the project will not materially impact the growth of Alberta´s oilsands. TransCanada´s $7-billion pipeline project — proposed to ship oilsands crude to refineries on the United States Gulf Coast — has been in the crosshairs of environmentalists keen to halt oilsands expansion. (Snip) The project will then be subject to a final decision by President Barack Obama. The report released Friday was drafted to not make a recommendation, said Jones.

Comments:
If you want to know a country with a major job-producing project is really screwed, it´s Canada. Unless they can offer Michelle & Biden some all-expense paid skiing trips for the next few years, their oil isn´t going to cross our borders, if ever.

Don´t you just love it. The State Department gets a say because the decision will impact our relations with a foreign country. So you´d you would expect statements along the lines that this will create a trade of 200,000 barrels per day of natural gas liquids going to Canada and 800,000 barrels per day oil coming to the US. The Canadian fits our refineries nicely because they were designed to crack heavy oils. The Canadian expenditure of 5 billion US in capital will create thousands of union jobs laying the pipeline. What do you hear, environmental Barbara Streisand.

By my reckoning the approval was certain. The unions have more clout and money.

And besides, the environmentalists won´t switch and back the GOP. So why should O please them?

O may still try to trade final approval for something. The GOP should not bargain on it.
