| Bonnie Franklin, whose portrayal of a pert but determined Ann Romano on the television show “One Day at a Time” in the 1970s and ’80s spun laughter out of the tribulations of a divorced woman juggling parenting, career, love life and feminist convictions, died on Friday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 69. The cause was complications of pancreatic cancer, family members said. They had announced the diagnosis in September. Ms. Franklin also acted on the stage and in movies and for years sang and danced in a nightclub act.

I enjoyed One Day At A Time. I had the pleasure to meet Valerie Bertinelli and Mackenzie Philips. They were participating in a telethon in Seattle. I was the audio engineer. I worked with them to help them use good hand held microphone techniques. I still have the audio recordings we made during rehearsals.

I also enjoyed the show. Bonnie was a good actress. Yes and I had a crush on Valerie too, that is until she married Bon Jovi. I felt she lowered herself esteem to become a rockwhore. They later divorced but I no longer cared.

Yes, I watched and enjoyed the show, too. But I guess if you are going to star in a Norman Lear show, it helps to share Norman Lear´s politics. Franklin played Margaret Sanger on TV (Sanger was a eugenicist who wanted to greatly reduce the black population via abortion and founded Planned Parenthood) and she went on to appear at pro-abortion rallies to support the cause.
It´s a good time to pray for her soul.

As one of two teenaged girls living with a single divorced mom, I watched the show a lot. It started out pretty good but then Bonnie´s character went full blown feminazi. After reading #9´s post, apparently it wasn´t just the character she played.

I always thought she was blowzy and the show was trashy. I didn´t like its values. I quit watching TV after shows like this came to dominate the airwaves and have never since returned.

Shanghai & Hong Kong - China said it was mobilizing resources nationwide to combat a new strain of bird flu that has killed six people, as Japan and Hong Kong stepped up vigilance and the United States said it was closely monitoring the situation. All of the 14 reported infections from the H7N9 bird flu strain have been in eastern China and at least four of the six dead are in the financial hub of Shanghai, a city of 20 million people. The strain does not appear to be transmitted from human to human but authorities in Hong Kong raised a preliminary alert and said they were taking precautions at the airport.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs.
