Republicans in bombshell move
push through bill giving tax credits
for kids at ´failing´ schools
to go to private schools

Republicans dropped a legislative bombshell tonight as they slammed through a dramatically revamped education bill that will give tax credits for families at "failing schools" to send their children to private school or another public school. Lawmakers voted mid-day to send a school flexibility bill -- that would let school systems seek waivers from some policies -- to conference committee.

The House of Representatives approved the bill by a 51-26 vote. The Senate approved the bill 22-11.

A very lop-sided vote indeed.

This is the most important part of the bill:

"...it will benefit students and families across Alabama regardless of their income and regardless of where they live,..."

Not based on income or race!

Sounds like the Republicans "Nancy Pelosied" the Dims. You Know:"...just pass the bill, you can read it later!..."

How long before a court strikes it down?

Sounds like the bill got a lot stronger in conference committee. It also sounds like the People of Alabama were well represented because the final votes in both houses were 2:1 in support. That means only the teachers unions and the administrators of failing schools were upset.

The BEST possible move to save the children of Alabama.

The Catholic and other private and religious schools are closing because parents cannot afford the tution any longer. Many because of the economy today. If we lose these schools the kids in many parts of the country will all be lost.

The cost of educating each student...on average...is one half of what our tax dollars are paying to send each child to public schools. The bulk of the money goes to administration in the public system...to teachers and kids in the private system.

In Chicago alone many wonderful bright 5 year olds...eager to learn, are actually going to be simply "housed" in gang recruitment centers for their first nine years of school life. Then SIXTY percent of them will not finish high school. Guess where they wind up?

Most parents don´t even have the option of Home Schooling because they lack the discipline and education themselves.

We have WONDERFUL public schools in this country; however, if you don´t live in an area that has one...your done.

And some Federal funding is based on the number of ´students´ in a school. So if public schools lose enough kids to private schools, the public school loses some of its funding. A two-for for a change. Kid gets better school and the crummy school gets less money.

There is less here than meets the eye. If you earn more 150% of the AL average income you are not eligible (at all) for the tax credit. Since the tax rate is five percent - but that is effectively reduced for dependents and credits for federal taxes - I guess the law would net the recipient at the most around $2000-2500 a year.

Still.

This bring a smile to my face! Not only because it is a great thing for kids but because it stuck it to the biggest union thugs in the state of Alabama, the AEA.

#8, there are online schools available that provide a ´homeroom´ teacher as well as science and math teachers for around $3000 - especially useful for parents who aren´t suited to participate in ´home schooling.

Most private schools educate students at a per capita rate 40 to 60 percent cheaper than public schools. The refunds these parents will be getting for hose who pay state income taxes at all may go a long way to making up what they need for their children to get what they pay for in the first place.

FTA: "I´ve never seen such sleaziness," Rep. Thomas Jackson, D-Thomasville, said.

Oh, I´d bet he´s well acquainted with real sleaziness.

The murder trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell largely is being ignored by the mainstream media, even in the face of grisly testimony, such as what we heard yesterday. Life News reports: ...a former employee described how she heard a baby scream during a live-birth abortion. Abortion clinic employee Sherry West described an incident which "really freaked (her) out" and related to the jury how she heard a child who was born alive following an abortion scream.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

Clinton, 33, essentially said "maybe" in an interview that aired Monday on NBC´s Today show. More than 700 Special Operations veterans are urging members of Congress to back a select committee to investigate last year’s Benghazi terrorist attack, according to a letter first obtained by Fox News. The letter from the group, “Special Operations Speaks,” supports the appointment of a special committee tasked with the single mission of investigating the attack that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead, and shut down the CIA operation in an annex of the Benghazi consulate, in the Sept. 11, 2012 attack. “Congress must show some leadership and provide answers to the public

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

The case of a same-sex Connecticut couple accused of repeatedly raping and abusing two of their nine adopted boys is headed for trial. Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors. The men had already pleaded no contest in January to one felony count each of risk of injury to a minor — a reduction from even more serious charges related to sexual assault....

More than six months since Ambassador Christopher Stevens was assassinated by terrorists in Benghazi, the Obama administration is still trying to keep a lid on information about the attack. Congress and the American people need to know what happened the night of Sept. 11, 2012. Who did the killing and what was their motive? Why wasn´t help sent? And why did the administration lie about who was responsible? Members of Congress have asked hundreds of questions at hearings conducted by several investigative committees, but many of the most significant have been left unanswered.
