Canadian Supreme Court Kills

That sound you hear is Voltaire rolling over in his grave. (Snip) Once upon a time, it was commonly understood that this sentiment is the very foundation of a free society. Compromise free speech, water it down, and you destroy freedom itself. In Toronto there lives a man named Bill Whatcott. During the last two decades or so, he has spent much of his time traveling around Canada, waving protest signs at gay-pride parades and Planned Parenthood clinics, agitating for the criminalization of homosexual acts and abortion, and distributing fliers packed with incendiary language about gays and graphic

Coming soon to a SCOTUS decision near you. They had better hurry up with their plans to disarm the populace before they do this though. I imagine quite a few Americans will not go peacefully when the authorities show up on their doorsteps to jail them for expressing themselves.

The article recounts the courts efforts trying to make a distinction between hate speech, which is outlawed, and free speech. They failed completely at this because they ruled out the best distinction by saying that truth is no defence. This is the only possible distinction. A statement based on demonstrable facts is not subject to political whims as the standard the court gives - in the authorities’ estimation, those facts might spark enmity toward a group. This outlaws the strategy in the old Ink Spots song: If you tell lies about me, I will tell the truth about you. Who could object to having that option or call that hatred?

Gov. Rick Snyder gives the Republican Party´s Weekly Remarks Hi, I´m Michigan Governor Rick Snyder. I´m speaking with you today from Grand Rapids, where this week we held our 2014 Governor’s Economic Summit. The event showcased the great innovation and workforce talent found across Michigan. I’m proud to be standing here today, because Grand Rapids was just named number two in the United States for its spring jobs outlook. It´s among the brightest spots in the country. These were still the early months of the Obama administration, and the vice president was touring the Balkans to take a victory lap in the breakaway Serbian territory whose independence he’d done so much to champion as an influential senator. As Vladimir Putin tucks away Crimea, just as he clawed South Ossetia and Abkhazia back from Georgia five years ago, Kosovo is worth remembering. Are Modern People Morally Advanced?

In regard to widespread disdain for the Middle Ages, C. S. Lewis felt that many modern people suffer from a kind of “chronological snobbery” and that “the modern conception of Progress ... is simply a myth, supported by no evidence whatever.” Certainly many minds smugly assume our world’s moral superiority to that of people in the past. That assumption merits some close critical scrutiny. This claim probably does not rest on an improvement in the numbers of deaths in war and genocide. Many millions died in past atrocities such as the Mongol invasions of Asia and Europe and the Muslim conquests

The Cold War map of the world divided into two camps was simple and clear. The post-American world will be a much more ambiguous place. Instead of two global ideological alliances based around two world powers, there will be three post-ideological powers, no longer global in scope, and one worldwide ideological alliance. The United States, Russia and China are post-ideological states. Russia and China have abandoned Communism. The United States is even abandoning nationalism; to say nothing of capitalism, democracy or freedom. Its rulers cling to scraps of global leftist ideology that isolate them from their own people.

Putin’s thuggery in the Crimea is rewarded by a slap on the wrist so effete that a Russian politician immediately tweeted “Comrade Obama” to laugh at him. Iran was just rewarded for thirty years of murderous aggression -- thirty years of Death to America! Two recent events, one on the West Coast and one on the East Coast, demonstrate that after half a century, support for racial preferences in college admissions is getting more and more unsustainable — both politically and intellectually. In California, liberals have long deplored the 1996 passage of Proposition 209, which banned racial preferences at state universities. Its backers pointed out that the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which is often cited as the authority for mandating preferential treatment for racial minorities, actually forbids all racial discrimination. “It is a sordid business, this divvying us up by race,” Supreme Court chief justice

Yesterday, in Greenville, N.C., a federal jury found that the University of North Carolina–Wilmington (UNCW) violated the free speech rights of conservative Christian professor Mike Adams. Specifically, the jury found that Dr. Adams’s First Amendment–protected speech was a “substantial or motivating factor” in the defendants’ decision not to promote him to full professor and that defendants could not prove they would have made the same decision in the absence of Dr. Adams’s speech activity. The case now moves to the judge to determine Dr. Adams’s relief. Dr. Adams’s story has now gone from a cautionary tale of the punishment that leftist

Millions of salaried workers may soon lose flexibility in how they work. President Obama plans to cover them under federal overtime regulations. This won´t raise their pay. It will, however, effectively convert them into hourly workers - putting the kibosh on the flexible work arrangements many employees value. Hourly employees get paid time-and-a-half for working more than 40 hours a week. However, under the "white collar exemption," businesses can pay many salaried employees for getting the job done, not simply for the hours they´ve logged. To qualify for this exemption, an employee must make more than a minimum salary, work in
