| VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict left the Vatican on Thursday after pledging unconditional obedience to whoever succeeds him to guide the Roman Catholic Church at one of the most crisis-ridden periods in its 2,000-year history. [Snip] Bells rang out from St Peter´s Basilica and churches all over Rome as the helicopter circled Vatican City and flew over the Colosseum and other landmarks to give the pontiff one last view of the city where he is also bishop.

I am not a Roman Catholic, so I can only imagine what many Catholics are feeling today.
Seeing the scenes of Rome today brought back waves of memories and nostalgia for the Eternal City, where I lived for four years. The feelings I have for Rome cannot be put into words.

The church has served attacks by armies, by plagues, by all sorts of conflicts and intrigues. In the long history of the Roman Catholic Church, this is NOTHING.

#1, I would agree that this is not anywhere close to the most crisis-ridden period of Catholic Church history. I would put the East-West schism in the period of around 1000-1100 AD represents a time of much greater crisis. Another time of much greater crisis is the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century. Both of those represented much greater crises for the Catholic Church than any of the controversies of my lifetime.

There has rarely been less of a "crisis-ridden" period than today. It isn´t hard to rattle off a pretty long list of "crises:" Communism, Nazism, Reformation, struggle with Islam, schisms, various heresies...this is nothing.
I also don´t get the attempt to worry about Benedict messing with the new guy. What in his resume suggests that? Projection by the writer perhaps? He´s old, tired and ready to move on. Why is that so hard to understand?

Representative Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) said at a Thursday press conference that House Republicans will rise up against GOP leadership if House Speaker John Boehner tries to rush any immigration reform bill through his chamber of Congress. “There would be a revolt among Republicans” if Boehner abandoned regular order on this issue, Rohrabacher said in response to a question from Breitbart News at the presser. The Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum was gunned down inside his vehicle after a car drove up and shot him at ‘point blank’ range, The West Virginia Gazette reported. Mingo County Office of Emergency Services head dispatcher Willis Spence says the shooting occurred in Williamson within a block of the Mingo County Courthouse. A state official says the suspect, a male, is custody and had to be taken to a nearby hospital after being shot. According to new data released by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 19.7 million new venereal infections in the United States in 2008, bringing the total number of existing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the U.S. at that time to 110,197,000. Israel said it fired into Syria on Sunday and destroyed a machinegun position in the Golan Heights from where shots had been fired at Israeli soldiers in a further spillover of the Syrian civil war along a tense front. The mysterious disappearance of about 30 dogs in southern Idaho has baffled animal control officials and raised concerns among dog lovers after a German shepherd was found with its head crushed in a suspected ritual killing. The missing canines range widely in size, breed and age. "The dogs seem to vanish into thin air," said Debbie Blackwood, director of the animal shelter in Twin Falls, Idaho. Officials say some 30 dogs have gone missing in recent months in Twin Falls and nearby communities in an agricultural region in south-central Idaho known as the Magic Valley.
