I call BS. Exactly how many employees of DHS are issued firearms? 1.6 Billion rounds is a lot of bullets.

Let´s see...according to their website:

•Number of DHS employees: 199,492
•Number of bullets: 1,600,000,000

That would be 8,020 rounds of ammunition for every employee...and I´m guessing not everyone gets a firearm.

I spend 20 years in the Army. Much of it in ground combat units. Our soldiers never had that much ammo to practice with. Why should I believe or trust the current government?

Very few law enforcement agencies practice with hollow-point bullets. They´re simply too expensive and not appropriate to practice.

A hollow-point bullet is designed to expand in flesh, it is an operational round. It is also only for domestic use in law enforcement, it is BANNED under the Laws of Armed Conflict.

According to Tom Gresham, and he would know, the use hollow points for practice because federal law requires them to practice with the same ammunition they carry. Simple as that. It´s a stupid law, but there it is.

That´s just too much ammo for "practice" so whatever the government is up to and their shills are covering for, is scary. I´d trust Palin on this one.

I have lived on this earth, in this country for more than a half century. There is not one doubt in my mind that the National Government intends to use these millions of rounds of bullets against the citizens when civil unrest ensues due to the coming economic collapse.

Palin like the rest of us depends on the media getting their stories correct. She based her opinion on incorrect media reporting. The correction only came out after her FB opinion. Keep in mind this is the second order placed for ammo. I´ve seen no correction to the first large order. The first was large enough not to need another.

Generally speaking, because of cost, most agencies use FMJ rounds for practice and hollow points to carry. I believe you are required to train with the same caliber round not necessarily the exact type of round (i.e. issue 40 caliber pistols but train with .22 LR).

Lets see what the different agencies purchased in the past years and compare what they are buying now. I highly doubt they would be in the numbers being quoted today.

Many of us have watched these huge purchases of bullets, and many of the purchases have been "hollow point," a very deadly bullet that rips through a body. No one would ever use hollow point ammo for target practice or training. If one adds up the fed´s purchases, they now have enough bullets to kill every man woman and child about seven times. And please tell me why the Social Security Administration would need millions of rounds of hollow point bullets?

The "target practice" story makes sense - if we assume that all armed Federal employees are at the range 5 days a week and most weekends, banging away and raising a racket that can be heard for miles around. They would have to be practicing their shooting even on major holidays to use up such incredible amounts of ammo. If it were actually the case that there is this much target practicing going on, the same question would remain: how come? What possible need is there for such marksmanship? Who do the Feds plan to be shooting?

It would be illuminating to have the statistics on actual practice times and ammunition consumed, as well as the number of times Federal employees discharge a firearm each year in pursuance of duty.

People pushing the "target practice" story obviously think Americans are really stupid.

I have no idea why the Feds are stockpiling such vast quantities of ammo - but the absurd story that it is merely for routine target practice is an insult to our intelligence. The willingness of the media to accept and defend this preposterous claim is another mark of shame for a once proud and loyal profession.

Even though she has been proven to be correct in her many comments, either by Facebook, Twitter or in her many speeches. Ah, but #26, it´s pretty simple to be "correct" when you are just following others. The stockpiling of ammo has been discussed for months in the media and on these threads. The difference with Palin is that she has attributed a sinister motive that is unsubstantiated. If she has a source for her claim, I assume she will share it.

If you look at the original purchasing documents, these reports are off by a factor of 1000 due to misreading the units.

I am pretty sure that the reported 1.6 billion should be 1.6 MILLION. This has been fairly widely reported here and elsewhere but apparently people would rather be hysterical instead of looking up the facts.

And YES, many agencies will ONLY practice with the same ammo as they use in actual work - two sensible reasons.
First - the officers need to know the recoil and point of impact that they are practicing with will be the same in actual use. Second - semiauto pistols will not always function properly with all ammo types. Some hollowpoint ammo will not feed properly. Proper function is best verified by training with the exact ammo to be used in "real life".
