The story of Pope Benedict’s controversial
red shoes, which he will give up

Washington Post, by Caitlin Dewey

Original Article

Pope Benedict XVI will give up his Swiss Guard protection, his Twitter account and even the name “Benedict” when he officially abdicates Wednesday. But judging by the Twitter chatter, the greatest loss of all may be his shoes. The pope’s red leather loafers became something of a trademark during his time in office, landing Benedict in a few unexpected places — including the style pages of Esquire magazine, who named the pontiff “accessorizer of the year” in 2007. Several pairs were handmade by an artisan in the north of Italy who has also cobbled

There´s a lot of deep divisionsin the church right now even though they´re trying to downplay it.There´s a lot of special interests that want to implode the church from the inside out, exactly what´s happening in this country. The Post doesn´t want to address the important problems facing the church and instead focus on a pair of loafers that have zero importance in the big picture.
The media doesn´t have a clue on the Christan belief system but stick their nose in it anyway.

Now ,that´s some real craftsmanship. I hope the cobbler is rewarded handsomely as a result of this publicity.

Along with many articles on the schisms within the Catholic church (many of which have been posted here), there are articles on the pope himself. He has been considered to be somewhat of a fashion plate, commissioning more stylish clothing than other recent popes have ordered. I am no defender of the WaPo, but this just seems to be another of those side stories.

Prada is a fashion house. One wouldn´t normally associate it with the pope.

Putting Heritage in DeMint Condition

Jim DeMint is taking some calculated risks, but he might really be on to something good. The South Carolinian DeMint, who famously left the U.S. Senate last January to become president of the Heritage Foundation, spoke in Mobile, Ala., Wednesday night at a fundraiser for the Alabama Policy Institute, one of the oldest and best state think tanks in the country. Emphasizing the theme that the nation’s politics and policy must be improved from the bottom up, through grassroots action, DeMint made quite a good impression. And he had to overcome my initial skepticism to do it.

From Benghazi to Boston

Fitting that the House held hearings within 24 hours on both the Benghazi attack and the Boston marathon bombing. The two seemingly disparate events, separated by time and distance and sophistication, share much in common. By the close of each sorry episode, four people had died. The villains in each case considered themselves soldiers of Allah fighting a holy war against America. In both instances the political correctness of government officials prevented discovery of the truth. Benghazi and Boston are symptoms of the same disorder. They are twin studies in evasion. On Wednesday the House Oversight Committee

The grandson of slain civil rights leader Malcolm X was reported Thursday to have died in Mexico. The death of Malcolm Shabazz, 29, was reported online by the Amsterdam News, which cited an Internet post by a family friend. The circumstances, however, were not immediately clear. Officials at the State Department told the Daily News a United States citizen had died in Mexico City, but they would not provide further information. “We have been in contact with family members and at their request we have no further comment at this time,” an official said.

If you’d fallen asleep for the past month, and had awakened to tune into a recent Boston Red Sox broadcast, you’d likely be surprised to learn that this bunch of Sox are in first place, but would be much more surprised to hear Don Orsillo, the play-by-play guy, read promos for something called the One Fund, established, as he notes during breaks in the action, to “help victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.” (Snip)Another question is what, other than giving satisfaction to the giver, the money does. Fans of Glenn Beck are complaining about what I wrote yesterday about his speech at the National Rifle Association convention, where he used a giant image of Michael Bloomberg photoshopped into what appeared to be an image of Hitler with his arm raised in a Nazi salute and wearing an armband. The Beck crowd now tells me that it wasn’t Hitler’s picture into which the New York mayor was transposed but that of Communist leader Vladimir Lenin. They say that means I owe Beck an apology along with the Anti-Defamation League and others who were also outraged by it.

The Obama administration wants to consign the Benghazi terrorist attack to the history books, but this week three State Department officials will tell Congress that the Obama administration’s version of history is false — and that the falsehoods it told the American people were willful and deliberate. One of the whistleblowers, Mark Thompson, deputy coordinator for operations in the State Department’s counterterrorism bureau, was in direct, real-time communication with people on the ground during the Sept. 11, 2012, attack in Libya, before he was locked out of the room. Yet despite his firsthand knowledge of how the attack

Dickey told analysts on the earnings call that his radio empire’s revenue was down $5.6 million in the first quarter of 2013 on top of a boatload of debt. Why? Parse the weasel words (“the impact of certain things”) and you’ll see that Dickey is blaming one man for the precipitous decline of right-wing talk radio’s profitability: Rush Limbaugh. If it wasn’t obvious beforehand, it became clear last week that Ted Cruz is likely to run for president. On Wednesday, the freshman senator’s advisors spilled the beans about his thinking on 2016 to National Review (short version: highly doable), and Friday Cruz showed up in the critical primary state of South Carolina to speak at the state GOP’s “Silver Elephant Dinner.” Which raises a question conspiratorial liberals have been waiting to ask of a Republican since at least 2008: Is Ted Cruz, who was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father,

BOSTON — The families of those who lost loved ones and individuals who suffered double amputations or permanent brain damage in the Boston Marathon bombing would receive the highest payments from a fund created to help people injured in the twin blasts, according to a draft proposal of payouts from the One Fund Boston, which has already taken in more than $28 million in donations. The fund administrator, Kenneth Feinberg, unveiled the draft proposal at a public meeting Monday at the Boston Public Library, across the street from the bombing site.

We have seen in the Boston bombings case how terrorists depend on a network of sympathizers. But the Russian connection remains a mystery. The press should follow up on the Russian angle to the Islamic terrorist bombers story before President Obama gets carried away with cooperating with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The assumption by the media that the former KGB officer is genuinely interested in helping the U.S. solve its Islamic terrorism problem should be subjected to scrutiny. After all, al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has been identified by KGB defectors as a Russian agent.

South Carolina’s suspense-filled special election between Republican Mark Sanford and Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch comes to a close Tuesday — and it’s anyone’s guess how it will end. Will enough Republicans hold their noses and vote for Sanford, despite their misgivings about his personal conduct, to put him over the top? Or are there enough energized Democrats in the heavily GOP district to carry the day for Colbert Busch? Colbert Busch seemed to be in the driver’s seat a week ago, but the late momentum has been with Sanford. The race is now so close — a weekend survey

The White House on Wednesday stood by its story that the Obama administration remained unsure exactly who was responsible for the attack on the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi nearly five days after it occurred even though new revelations show Ansar al-Sharia’s direct involvement. Gregory Hicks, the deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Libya and a self-described whistleblower, testified before a Congressional committee Wednesday that the body of Ambassador J. Christpher Stevens was missing for hours during the attack after being dragged out of the diplomatic post in Benghazi.

Northwestern University continued to stumble over diversity issues this week as Mexican students voiced disagreement with a campuswide letter that advised students not to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by engaging in racially-offensive activities, such as eating tacos and drinking tequila. The letter was sent to students via e-mail, and published in The Daily Northwestern last week. Leaders of Alianza, a Latino student group, and the Associated Student Government called on students to remember that Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla. It is not a day to throw a sombrero-themed party, they said.

There was tragic incompetence, plainly, in the Obama administration’s handling of the Benghazi attacks, and even possibly some political calculation. It is a record that may well come to haunt Hillary Clinton, the first Secretary of State to lose an ambassador in the field in more than three decades, if she runs for president in 2016. But the obvious Republican effort to turn this inquiry into the Democratic (Obama) version of the Iraq intelligence scandal that has tarred the GOP since the George W. British physicist Stephen Hawking has dropped plans to attend a major international conference in Israel in June, citing his belief that he should respect a Palestinian call to boycott contacts with Israeli academics. The University of Cambridge released a statement Wednesday indicating that Hawking had told the Israelis last week that he would not be attending "based on advice from Palestinian academics that he should respect the boycott." University officials said they had "previously understood" that Hawking´s decision was based solely on health concerns — he is 71 and has severe disabilities — but had now been told otherwise by Hawking´s office.

John McCain is going to release a bill that would dismantle cable as it´s currently constructed, Brenden Sasso at The Hill reports. The legislation would force cable companies and satellite TV providers to give consumers an option to pick and choose which channels they get. This is called "à la carte programming," and it´s long been a dream of consumers who only want a handful of channels. McCain tried to introduce similar legislation in 2006 and it went nowhere.
