| Earlier today the Associated Press reported that a Department of Homeland Security official had resigned in the wake of the Obama administration’s decision to release thousands of illegal aliens awaiting the judicial process. The department cited budget cuts as the reason for the releases, despite the fact that the cuts would hit about one percent of DHS’s budget, and they have not even happened yet. The AP’s story turns out to have been premature. No one has been fired or resigned in the wake of the release scandal. The senior Homeland Security Department official in charge of arresting

Re: #8 - DHS is largely a consolidation of multiple agencies that existed long before the creation of DHS. Border Patrol, Customs, Coast Guard, Secret Service, FEMA, Immigration and federal air marshals. TSA was created out of whole cloth but they mostly replaced security workers previously employed by the airlines and regulated by the FAA. At its inception in 2002, TSA was initially under Transportation as it predated DHS. While all federal agencies are bloated, more so under this administration, the bulk of DHS consists of agencies that previously existed but were consolidated under the new cabinet-level department created by congress in 2003.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs.
