NY Mayor Bloomberg: From banning
large sodas to buying Chicago
elections

Investor´s Business Daily, by Andrew Malcolm

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has now moved from banning large soft drinks and salty soups in his own city to electing his preferred candidate in a special House election in Chicago. Robin Kelly, a former Illinois state representative, won a crowded Second District Democrat primary Tuesday to fill the seat of the latest Chicago politician to face a few years residency in a federal penitentiary, Jesse Jackson Jr. Winning the Democrat primary in that district, which includes part of Chicago´s South Side where Barack Obama used to live, is tantamount to victory in the special election April 9.

GOP: Not just equal pay,

There was plenty of talk in Washington this week about equal pay. The thing is — it was just that: more talk. As a woman who worked at McDonald’s to get through college…. as the mom of two young daughters … and as the elected representative of thousands of hardworking women, I have always supported equal pay for equal work. And if a woman is being paid less than a man because of gender discrimination, that is both wrong and against the law. The protections provided to women and others in the Equal Pay Act must be enforced to make certain there is no pay disparity because of discrimination.

Hi, everybody. Earlier this week was Equal Pay Day. It marks the extra time the average woman has to work into a new year to earn what a man earned the year before. You see, the average woman who works full-time in America earns less than a man — even when she’s in the same profession and has the same education. That´s wrong. In 2014, it’s an embarrassment. Women deserve equal pay for equal work. This is an economic issue that affects all of us. Women make up about half our workforce. And more and more, they’re our families’ main breadwinners. So it’s good for everyone when women are paid fairly.

President Obama and wife Michelle are back on the road again, this time in Texas to harvest more Democrat dollars for the looming November midterm election. The previously-scheduled fundraising foray was tacked onto Obama´s memorial speech Wednesday at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. Why let a nationally-televised shooting memorial go to waste when you can use such an official activity to cut the Democratic Party´s cost of political transportation on Air Force One for two fundraisers in Houston and another one today in Austin?

For many years whenever the president nears any crowd, a Secret Service agent walks ahead along the rope line ordering everyone to keep hands out of their pockets where agents can see them. That´s less of a problem these days. Because the hands of most everyone in such locations are holding cellphones to take photos of the nearby celebrity. And if there´s a campaign underway requiring the politician to ingratiate himself, possibly a selfie with the big guy himself. It's priceless political PR -- and free. The American media endure a soiled reputation in the United States these days. Rightly so too often. Many of its members failed their sentry duty during the run-up to the 2008 presidential elections, and oftentimes since covering only selectively positive parts of Barack Obama´s reign of error. Today´s column reminds us there is media and then there is media. Anja Niedringhaus was a member of the other media. Unfortunately, it’s been that way for the last six years. Hi, everybody. Today, our economy is growing and our businesses are consistently generating new jobs. But decades-long trends still threaten the middle class. While those at the top are doing better than ever, too many Americans are working harder than ever, but feel like they can’t get ahead. That’s why the budget I sent Congress earlier this year is built on the idea of opportunity for all.

One of the most powerful tools politicians have at their disposal is self-deprecation, the skill of making gentle fun of themselves in public, enough to get a laugh and show a humble human side. But not enough to feed critics. Ronald Reagan was the modern master of that. Many Americans have been watching with great consternation the ongoing struggle between the Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Marshals against Cliven Bundy and his family. There are no signs of either side relinquishing their position. Many onlookers have been informed that this dispute is over protecting the desert tortoise. But it is nothing of the sort. In fact, the reality of the dispute goes far underneath what is being talked about. The more appropriate source of the dispute is ground water as well as surface water -- this is a war over water. The son of the Nevada rancher locked in an increasingly tense land dispute with the federal government, says their cowboys managed to break a blockade and retrieve around 30 head of cattle. Federal agents swooped on Tuesday after Cliven Bundy, dubbed the last remaining rancher in southern Nevada, refused to remove his herd of 900 cows from land he claims has been in his family since 1870. The heavily-armed federal agents, equipped with eight helicopters and backed-up by snipers, surrounded the Bundy ranch after the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) attained a federal court order to confiscate the family´s herd. Following the massacre of grammar-school children in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, high-powered weapons have been used to kill innocent victims in more senseless public incidents. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators. A Nevada cattle rancher appears to have won his week-long battle with the federal government over a controversial cattle roundup that had led to the arrest of several protesters. Cliven Bundy went head to head with the Bureau of Land Management over the removal of hundreds of his cattle from federal land, where the government said they were grazing illegally. Bundy claims his herd of roughly 900 cattle have grazed on the land along the riverbed near Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, since 1870 and threatened a "range war" against the BLM on the Bundy Ranch website after one of

There is mainstream media-suppressed case history in Nevada the feds are desperately trying to keep under wraps. Chief Judge Robert C.
