Rumor control: Did the Dept.
of Homeland Security recently
request to purchase 21,600,000
rounds of handgun ammo?

Daily Caller, by Mike Piccione

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 2/27/2013 6:01:26 AM

On February 5, 2013 the Department of Homeland Security issued a “Solicitation/Contract/Order for Commercial Item” for ammunition to be purchased and delivered to the DHS Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, New Mexico. The ammunition being purchased is “Commercial Lead Training Ammo” — or CLTA, in government speak. There are three components to the order: 1. .40 caliber, 165 grain jacketed hollow point rounds 2. 9mm, 115 grain jacketed hollow point rounds 3. 9mm, 124 grain ball ammunition

Obama´s latest action, banning ex service people from owning guns is a direct result of the idiots at the Southern Poverty Law center targeting returning vets as some sort of unorganized terror threat.

The far left phobics at the SPLC see every retuning vet as a possible Tim McVeigh.

Obama´s war on his imaginary enemies tramples on many tenant of the constitution which is losing the power of authority every day.

If the federal government wanted to dry up the availability of common ammo for normal people, what would they do?

(Hint: see article)

This is what happens when people believe the wildest things they read instead of taking it with a grain of salt and going back to the source. Someone miscalculated the DHS RFP, then one person after another took up just the erroneous headline and ran with it.

Similarly, the administration did not ban returning veterans from owning guns! Rather, the VA pointed out that those deemed incompetent (meaning having a guardian appointed) could not purchase weapons. Well, hello! Persons who go through the judicial system to have a guardian appointed lost the legal right to contract. Thus, they cannot enter into any contracts, including those to purchase weapons. No surprise there.

Why would someone need a guardian appointed? Those with certain brain dysfunctions or injuries may require a guardian to handle their affairs. But standard information concerning guardianship has been picked up as an attack on veterans. Not so.

Who knows the truth anymore? We certainly can´t trust the media. They have lost all credibility. I do believe that Obama and his administration will do whatever it takes to achieve their goals whether it be a war on the Second Amendment or creating an atmosphere of fear. Americans believe it is better to be safe than sorry and that is why you are seeing them arm themselves. They fear their government.

#3 - they would just buy them from China. The fact that they don´t already lends credence to the explanation that they are simply trying to dry up the availability to the public while amassing a storehouse.

All I know is that *I* can´t find ammo. When even .22lr is nearly impossible to find, or going for 50 cents/round (yes, I´ve seen that price), something is amiss.

Sure, figures vary. And as another pioster said, no one knows the truth. But it cannot be denied that big government is engaged in an unprecedented ammunition stockpile. Platitudes cannot dismiss the truth.

Assuming the article is correct, why is it the free people were so quick to believe the worst about this government? Maybe because the worst is what we usually get?
These communists have proven time and time again they will lie, cheat and destroy to meet their political ends. They even send trolls by the thousands to web sites to try and muddy the waters. They have no governing philosophy except that of power, and they have openly admitted power comes from the point of a gun. Is it any wonder only fools trust them?

Cheaperthandirt.com has ammo, but at wildly inflated prices. Six months ago, ammo for my .223 could be had for $400 for 1000 rounds. Today, it is $1,000 for the same amount. Same across the board for .40, .45, and 9mm. Don´t even think about getting .25, .32, .357 or .38. Its just not there. Even .30-30 rifle ammo is dried up.

DHS is up to something. Very fishy. They got the ammo, they got the assault weapons on order and are they now recruiting thugs for their internal military force who are willing to shoot down American citizens?

So according to the article DHS having 240,000 employees and buying 240,000 of ammo gives them the equivalent of 1 round each for target practice. I can vision that, OK Jimmy brown shirt, here´s your 1 round for the range, make it count. Don´t forget to clean your piece afterwards.

#22 - Returning veterans are not "well armed". The government doesn´t let you keep your firarms after you rotate back to the states or you leave the service. They have to buy their own guns like everyone else.

Ammo manufacturers would be wise to pass on the easy gov´t sales, and focus on their long-term and steady customers, who are we private gun owners. This won´t be forgotten.

I find it really amusing to think of DHS as being a threat. I´m sure that among the swollen payroll, there exist some people who could actually handle a firearm. But the vast bulk of these cretins are only proficient in pat-downs of the children or the elderly, with the abiding animus toward "The Man".

Hollow-point ammunition is not right. It is outlawed under the Geneva Convention, so it can´t have military purpose, however, revision of the Posse Comitatus has been a game-changer there too. If they´re doing this it´s a liberal trick to drive a shortage and create an artificial price increase to discourage citizens from buying ammo. Unbeknownst to the Feds, a whole lot of ammo comes into this country from eastern Europe, and is cheap. Wait till they impose massive tariffs on that too. That´s when you´ll know the war on liberty is about to begin.

Hollow point shells are a great target bullet. Good for hunting squirrels too. They´ll get great use using those target sheets of pregnant women and regular looking folks wearing John Deere hats. As our Government assembles over 2.5 Billion pieces of ammunition, and it´s not a rumor, so groups like the Homeland Security, EPA, IRS and the Department of Education masses an arsenal larger than any other group. the ´why´ was eloquently spelled out at survivalbasictraining.com Does the Government know something they´re not telling us about?

I use hollow-points for defensive ammo. It´s a safety issue. They are not as likely to speed through the target and injure a bystander or family member.

They are designed to take care of the threat with less opportunity for collateral damage.

Reply 37 - Posted by: weejun, 2/27/2013 11:39:50 AM     (No. 9199018)

Roger that, #35. Come on, guys: read the article before posting. #37, the answer is simple: every time the feds start talking about gun control, us gun owners panic (and I am not necessarily condemning that) and start scarfing up every pistol, rifle and round of ammo in sight for fear that we will be banned from owning the stuff. As the econ 101 law of supply and demand says, "me got, you want." Thus, the price of an AR-15 has tripled; ammo of ALL types has dried up, and what is left (especially .223) is triple the price. I would like to say this is temporary, but I am afraid the assault on the 2nd amendment has more steam behind it this time than four years ago when Obammi and his minions raised the ugly specter of gun control. Hang tough, and keep your powder dry.

Good article and good checking. This is the kind of fact checking that all the reportage should include and, sad to say, some of the sources I use (e.g. IBD) didn´t do their work.

With that said, I´ve only every used ´hardball´ for putting holes in targets. Hollow point is more expensive and for use stopping really bad people.

So, why the purchase of that?

Reply 40 - Posted by: dvc, 2/27/2013 1:26:00 PM     (No. 9199234)

The DHS ammo buy has been known to be reported in error by a factor of 1000 for some time. I have posted this here, as have others, nobody wants to listen, they want to believe in conspiracy.

The REAL cause of the ammo shortage is US. 6.5 million Federal background checks for gun purchases have happened (IIRC) in the last 3 months. Guns are being bought in anticipation of some draconian gun control restrictions. The same folks are buying ammo for their new guns and not 50 rounds, they are buying many hundreds and even thousands of rounds.

Existing gun owners are joining in, fear is causing a "run" on ammo and people that used to keep two 50 rd boxes of pistol ammo, now want 10 or 15 boxes. They system cannot surge to that level. Modern production processes are very highly tuned to "just in time" delivery of everything, which saves costs but means there is nearly zero slack in the system. There is very little raw materials or finished guns or ammo kept in warehouses. It flows through the system and when the demand surges this much, they cannot keep up.

WE are the problem, not a mysterious ammo buy by DHS. Time to take off the tinfoil hats and understand what is REALLY happening.

#5 Thanks for clarifying the veterans issue.

#8 Everything is sold out due to hoarding by private citizens. This started after the election and really took off after Sandy Hook.

Don´t think of the gun and ammunition manuractures as these huge corporations that can turn on and off hyper production at a moments notice. For the most part they are smaller operations. They can expand along with a normal demand curve. The current situation is anything but normal.

You can´t even find reloading components such as brass, primers and bullets of any common caliber right now. The companies are cranking it out as fast as they can.

Hold on until this settles down and you can find all the .22 you want.

It amazes me how posters here can still go on saying things like "well, OK, our numbers were all wrong, but you can´t deny the government is stockpiling tremendous amounts of ammo." Hello? Do reason and logic and math mean nothing to conservatives? Prices always rise when supplies go down however how many rounds were bought and stored away ( hoarding)before general fears created an ammo rush equal to gold fever.
One way to beat the feds is for every able citizen to join his/her state National Guard. Too old -- volunteer as support.

From the Washington Post, February 14,2013:

"Dixon said one of the contracts would allow Homeland Security to buy up to 750 million rounds of ammunition over the next five years for its training facilities. The rounds are used for basic and advanced law enforcement training for federal law enforcement agencies under the department’s umbrella. The facilities also offer firearms training to tens of thousands of federal law enforcement officers. More than 90 federal agencies and 70,000 agents and officers used the department’s training center last year.
The rest of the 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition would be purchased by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal government’s second largest criminal investigative agency.

ICE’s ammunition requests in the last year included:

—450 million rounds of .40-caliber duty ammunition

—40 million rounds of rifle ammunition a year for as many as five years, for a total bullet-buy of 200 million rounds

—176,000 rifle rounds on a separate contract

—25,000 blank rounds

The Homeland Security ammo buy is not the first time the government’s bullets purchases have sparked concerns on the Internet. The same thing happened last year when the Social Security Administration posted a notice that it was buying 174,000 hollow point bullets."
http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-02-14/world/37094284_1_ammunition-requests-hollow-point-bullets-law-enforcement

As you can see, the issue is deliberately being clouded to discredit Palin. The is no mention of the redacted purchasing order from 2012 either in the article.

Frustration is taking its toll in the liberals’ war against guns. President Obama, pushing his broad gun control agenda, said we should be ashamed if we’ve forgotten the Newtown shooting so soon. The New York Times opined that Obama is being shouted down by the “gun lobby,” even though he and Biden had been crisscrossing the country “…making a forceful case for a package of laws that would reduce gun violence.” That, of course, is the media narrative on gun control. For every issue there is a narrative: a set of assumptions and boundaries of thought

Is it time to give up the fight against Obamacare? That’s a question some conservative health-care experts, pundits, and — more quietly — politicians are asking. In the first years after its passage, opponents had hoped that the Supreme Court would strike down the law or that a new president would sign its repeal before most of it took effect. But the Supreme Court decided to modify a few of its provisions instead of striking it down, and President Obama was reelected. Repeal is almost certainly off the table for four years. Obamacare will continue to be implemented.

As the bipartisan Gang of Eight works to complete a comprehensive immigration reform bill, there has been a growing consensus among Senate Republicans that the bill — so far seen by no one outside the Gang — should be the subject of multiple hearings and extended consideration inside the Senate Judiciary Committee. But on Sunday there were signs that consensus does not extend to the Republicans inside the Gang. Appearing on CBS, longtime immigration reform advocate and Gang member Sen. John McCain suggested the immigration issue is so familiar to lawmakers that multiple hearings will not be necessary.

One of the more disturbing aspects of the internet culture — fed largely by the ability to post anonymously — is the rash of mean, hateful comments made following the death of a prominent figure associated with one side or the other. It’s a disease that afflicts both sides. The death of Ted Kennedy a few years ago brought out the haters on the right to an unprecedented degree. The vitriol and foul language as well as carefully composed comments designed to inflict the maximum amount of pain that were the rule on the right

La Jolla´s jagged coastline is strictly protected by environmental laws to ensure the San Diego community remains the kind of seaside jewel that has attracted swanky restaurants, top-flight hotels and some of the nation´s rich and famous, including billionaire businessman Irwin Jacobs and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Tourists flock to the place. So do birds. Lots of birds. And with those birds comes lots of poop. So rather than gasping in amazement at the beautiful views, some are holding their noses from the stench coming from the droppings that cake coastal rocks and outcroppings near its business district.

Obama, Kerry and Hagel thought that they had a plan for putting North Korea back in the box. North Korea had conducted a nuclear test in February, violating once again the various understandings that had been worked out. But agreements and understandings, written or oral, had never meant much to the repressive regime which had suspended the Armistice Agreement that ended the Korean War numerous times—including last month. So Obama decided to wave a stick. The playbook for North Korea would feature flights by B-2 and B-52 bombers and F-22 fighter jets to remind

Sen. John McCain says he doesn´t understand the threats from some of his Republican colleagues to filibuster a bill on background checks to buy guns. "I don´t understand it," the Arizona Republican said on Sunday of the threat coming from Sen. Rand Paul,Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Mike Lee and nine other Republicans. "The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand.” "What are we afraid of? ... If this issue is as important as we all think it is, why not take ... it up and debate?"

Michelle Obama has admitted that she is already tired of the bangs she first sported in January. The First Lady said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: ´Bangs are a day-by-day proposition. They´re starting to grow out, get a little irritating.´ Still, she hasn´t let her hairdo woes get her down. ´It´s okay,´ she said after her initial complaint. ´We´ll be good.´ The first indication that her hairstyle was becoming a burden came about last weekend, when Malia, 14, was spotted adjusting her mother´s hair during the White House Easter Egg Roll.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Los Angeles — Some people have had it with TV. They´ve had enough of the 100-plus channel universe. They don´t like timing their lives around network show schedules. They´re tired of $100-plus monthly bills. A growing number of them have stopped paying for cable and satellite TV service, and don´t even use an antenna to get free signals over the air. (Snip) Last month, the Nielsen Co. started labeling people in this group "Zero TV" households, because they fall outside the traditional definition of a TV home. North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. The report cited United Kingdom diplomats, saying Pyongyang was demanding the U.S. president personally call Kim Jong-un as one of the conditions to relieve the current conflict at hand. Itar-Tass also quoted the U.K.’s Sky News as saying North Korea currently has eight nuclear warheads.

On Friday, Sean Hannity brought Pat Smith, mother of the late Sean Smith, on his radio program. The 34-year-old information management officer was one of four Americans murdered in the Benghazi embassy attack on September 11, 2012. In the chilling interview, a distraught Ms. Smith, in tears, pleaded for answers and spoke of the efforts to silence her. Ms. Smith first relayed how her son, prior to the attack, requested additional security in advance and warned the State Department: He did tell them, ahead of time, he typed it into his little typewriter over there,

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Susan Patton, the Princeton alumna who became famous for her letter urging Ivy League women to use their college years to find a mate, has been denounced as a traitor to feminism, to coeducation, to the university ideal. But really she’s something much more interesting: a traitor to her class. Her betrayal consists of being gauche enough to acknowledge publicly a truth that everyone who’s come up through Ivy League culture knows intuitively —

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.

More than 700 Special Operations veterans are urging members of Congress to back a select committee to investigate last year’s Benghazi terrorist attack, according to a letter first obtained by Fox News. The letter from the group, “Special Operations Speaks,” supports the appointment of a special committee tasked with the single mission of investigating the attack that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead, and shut down the CIA operation in an annex of the Benghazi consulate, in the Sept. 11, 2012 attack. “Congress must show some leadership and provide answers to the public
