Rocket launcher and warhead ´intended to
kill´ found in house by police investigating
dissident republicans in Northern Ireland

Daily Mail [UK], by Mark Duell

Original Article

Posted By:Attercliffe, 2/27/2013 5:25:54 AM

A rocket launcher and warhead have been discovered by police investigating dissident republicans. Officers made the dramatic find while searching a house on Hawthorn Street, West Belfast, and the Police Service of Northern Ireland said that the launcher and warhead were intended to kill. A police spokesman said: ‘These weapon systems are clearly intended to kill and we should be in no doubt that the recovery of these items has saved lives.’ Dissidents have been linked to a series of attempts to kill members of the security forces, including soldiers, police and a prison officer.

Comments:
"Dissident Republicans" refers to groups such as the Marxist IRA, Provisional IRA (Provos), New IRA, and similar, who wish to take control of British Northern Ireland and unite it with southern Ireland (Eire) to create a People´s Republic of Ireland. Referendums consistently favor staying with Britain.

Anthropomorphic projections which are applied to weapons must be applied equally.

Are the police weapons for nice, happy purposes ?

Should the day ever arrive when we are over-run by terrorists, I would, frankly, prefer that they be Irish.

Terrorists are terrorists no matter the nationality or color. They all go for their targets and kill innocent people in the process. Why the IRA be any easier to deal with than the muslim I could not even begin to know.

"Referendums consistently favor staying with Britain"

Not true, the last real referendum was done in the 70´s, and the Catholics boycotted the vote. Since then the population shift has swung heavily towards Catholics. Within a generation the Prostestants will be a minority.

#4, it´s true that the SDLP ordered its members to boycott the 1973 referendum but their votes would not have changed the outcome. Of the 1,030,084 eligible to vote, 604,256 (58.66%) voted. Of those votes, 598,283 were deemed valid. 425,828 (41.34%) did not vote, that is, even if all the nonvoters had voted for leaving Britain, the outcome still would have shown a majority voting to stay with Britain.

I was under the impression another referendum took place in the 70s; I believe there was one in 2011 and another, in 2016, is being talked about. The 1998 referendum was more about the Peace Agreement than nationality.

The 2001 Census showed 53% of the population as Protestant and 44% Catholic. I don´t know what the last Census showed--perhaps #4 has the exact number--but I believe it will still show a Protestant majority. When 2016 rolls around, perhaps the balance will have shifted.

Disclaimer: My mother was from an Irish Catholic family and my father´s family was English Protestant.

Afghanistan could become a future terrorist haven when the U.S. withdraws unless a larger and more expensive Afghan security force is planned, a study has warned. The report sketched a scenario in which the Taliban would seek to capitalize on the absence of foreign combat forces and press its campaign to regain political power in Kabul. ´History suggests that the Taliban will use sanctuaries in Pakistan to regenerate their capabilities as military pressure on the movement declines,´ the report said. As a first step, in 2015-16, the Taliban may put additional pressure on Afghan security forces in rural areas, expand

Unremarked, the EU is about to hold its first federal elections. The European Parliament has been quietly sucking in more power for decades, but has so far lacked the supreme attribute of a federal legislature, namely the right to appoint a federal government. During the 2008 financial crisis, the US Federal Reserve struggled to grasp the scope of the problem and how to adequately respond, transcripts reveal. After a five-year wait, the central bank released the records of a total of 14 meetings from 2008. The transcripts offer the clearest insights yet into the central bank´s thinking during the crisis. "Frankly, I am decidedly confused and very muddled" said former chair Ben Bernanke during a September meeting. Overall, the documents paint a picture of the Fed that shows that it worried perhaps more than it should about inflation risks, and failed to grasp

Just when you thought you were safe - the Polar Vortex is back. The Midwest and North East are thawing out after being covered with more than a foot of snow over the past week, but forecasters have warned it won´t be for long as another cold front is on its way. The wintry storm is expected to slam the Midwest this weekend, bringing ferocious winds and freezing temperatures as low as 35 degrees below normal. After rattling the Midwest, it will stretch into the South and East at the start of next week, according to Weather Underground.

As Kiev burns, Western policymakers are eating ashes. Our efforts to help Ukraine towards Europe, democracy and the rule of the law have failed spectacularly. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin is celebrating not just sporting triumph in Sochi, but geopolitical victory in the affairs of his most important neighbour. It is easy to overcomplicate the Ukraine story with historical, ethnic and geographical details. The country is often said to be split between east and west, between Russian- and Ukrainian-speakers, between those nostalgic for Soviet certainties and those who want a Western-style future. Ukraine’s business elite is divided too, between the cronies of

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, may be the brightest light to adorn the Republican Party in many years. He knows how to make the case for conservative ideas, pointing, for example, to the contrasting fates of Detroit and Houston to illustrate the superiority of conservative policies. So it´s particularly galling to see that rather than train his fire at President Barack Obama and the liberal machine that cocoons him, Cruz has become a one-man wrecking ball against Republicans. His most recent foray into sabotaging his colleagues concerned the debt limit increase. Because Speaker John Boehner sent over a "clean" debt limit bill,
