Kerry defends liberties, says Americans have "right to be stupid"

| Secretary of State John Kerry offered a defense of freedom of speech, religion and thought in the United States on Tuesday telling German students that in America "you have a right to be stupid if you want to be." "As a country, as a society, we live and breathe the idea of religious freedom and religious tolerance, whatever the religion, and political freedom and political tolerance, whatever the point of view," Kerry told the students in Berlin, the second stop on his inaugural trip as secretary of state.
|
Comments: He sure represents that statement very well! And we thought Hillary was bad. What an embarrassment he is to this country.

We have a right to be stupid Benedict? Let´s review a few of your past public pontifications..."oldies but goldies":
-"The vast majority of our imports come from outside the country."
-"If we don´t succeed, we run the risk of failure."
-"It´s time for the human race to enter the solar system."
-"The future will be better tomorrow."
-"For NASA, space is still a high priority."

WASHINGTON - The House overwhelmingly passed a sweeping, $638 billion defense bill on Friday that imposes new punishments on members of the armed services found guilty of rape or sexual assault as outrage over the crisis in the military has galvanized Congress. Ignoring a White House veto threat, the Republican-controlled House voted 315-108 for the legislation, which would block President Barack Obama from closing the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and limit his efforts to reduce nuclear weapons.

“The greatest danger zone a president can be in is when he is being attacked on the left and the right. When they are reading off the same talking points, that’s when presidencies fall apart.” -- Dan Pfeiffer, senior adviser to President Obama, in an interview with the Washington Post. In the little that President Obama has said publicly about his administration’s recently exposed domestic surveillance programs he has returned to the overall motif of his presidency: warning against excessive distrust of the federal government. While hawks wait anxiously to see if Obama can

Glenn Greenwald is the Guardian journalist who broke the story of the NSA snooping. Greenwald came to prominence during the Bush years by denouncing that administration’s anti-terrorism policies. To his credit, Greenwald is one of the few on the left who has remained consistent and now criticizes Obama policies with almost as much zeal as he criticized Bush. Not to his credit, Greenwald developed a habit of using fake commenters to defend his written positions when others criticized him, and then denied that he engaged in any sockpuppetry. Greewald blamed the sockpuppetry on his boyfriend.

A July meeting of the House GOP conference on immigration reform was not scheduled in response to pressure from conservatives, several Republican leadership offices said Friday. Behind Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), Steve King (R-Iowa) and Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), conservative Republicans have been circulating a petition this week calling on House GOP leaders to stage a special conference meeting on comprehensive reform, according to several news outlets. The idea is to prolong the debate in hopes of killing the bill. Republican leaders have scheduled such a meeting on July 10.

The Democratic National Convention may be long over, but its organizers have not forgotten the almost half a million dollars worth of electronics they seem to have lost. Organizers of the Charlotte, N.C., convention have filed a police report for lost and stolen electronics, some of which they appear to have valued at as much as 62 times the listed market prices. A reportedly stolen 13-inch MacBook Pro laptop? $75,537. The price listed on the Apple website is $1,199. A lost iPhone? $30,503. A lost Blackberry? $54,250. The DNC did not respond to a request for comment.

While Obama participates in those talks, Michelle Obama and the kids are slated to head to Dublin’s Trinity College to take a look at an exhibition on Obama’s Irish ancestry. Researchers from Irish historical research company Eneclann spent four years tracing Obama’s ancestry on his mother’s side back to his seventh great-grandfather, Joseph Kearney (b. 1698). The Kearney family reportedly has links with Limerick and Galway as well as Ballygurteen.

In the midst of the eruption of near-daily scandals involving the Obama administration, let us not forget that until just a few months ago, Hillary Clinton was the most significant persona within that administration besides the president himself. Let us not also forget that notwithstanding the scandal-grenades going off all around us, Mrs. Clinton diligently plans her run for the presidency, even while several of those scandals are obviously and entirely her responsibility, exposing the State Department during her tenure as an utter sewer of corruption, cronyism, and fatal incompetence.

Over the years, I’ve read plenty of claims that we’re witnessing a “crackup” of liberals or conservatives (or sometimes both at the same time). Normally, I react by rolling my eyes. For me, “crackup” claims are a almost always hack way of expressing unjustified triumphalism. But now I think I see a crackup. Given the scandal-a-week Obama administration, you might think that the crackup, if any, is looming on the left. But that would be to ignore the left’s tendency to march more or less in lockstep through any scandal or storm. No, the crackup I see coming is among conservatives.
