America´s Red State
Growth Corridors

Wall Street Journal, by Joel Kotkin

Original Article

Posted By:Desert Fox, 2/25/2013 7:24:02 PM

In the wake of the 2012 presidential election, some political commentators have written political obituaries of the "red" or conservative-leaning states, envisioning a brave new world dominated by fashionably blue bastions in the Northeast or California. But political fortunes are notoriously fickle, while economic trends tend to be more enduring. These trends point to a U.S. economic future dominated by four growth corridors that are generally less dense, more affordable, and markedly more conservative and pro-business: the Great Plains, the Intermountain West, the Third Coast (spanning the Gulf states from Texas to Florida), and the Southeastern industrial belt.

Rationalize, rationalize, rationalize all you want. Nothing...nothing counts when over 50% of the voters either want to continue living off other people´s money (via taxes) or want to get into the growing ranks of those who want to live off other people´s money. Ignore everything else, because nothing else matters even a little bit.

The fact that these states, and their natural resources, cluster together should make Democrats worry. As the Federal government seeks to grow, it may not be able to without these wealthy states´ cooperation. The South may rise again is what I´m saying.

This is Starkness in Houston. Within the city limits of Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso, you have the same demographic and ideological mix that got Obozo reelected. But what´s great about it is that all of the Democrat mayors are not about to take the liberties with a successful economy that they can get away with elsewhere. The Democra* politicians are by no means as stupid as they are in say, places, like Cleveland, Detroit, washington dc, etc. And Mr. Kotkin knows what he´s talking about. That´s why Houston is still more or less a pleasant place to live, despite a lousy climate. Good cost of living, affordable housing, and jobs!!! And it´s quickly becoming one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world>

Vladimir Putin and his American apologists like to blame NATO´s post-Cold War expansion for his territorial conquests, which ignores that the alliance refused in 2008 to let Georgia and Ukraine even begin the process of joining. Those are the two countries the Russian has since carved up, and the question now is whether Russia´s expansionism will slap Western leaders out of their self-defense slumbers. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen sounded the alarm last week in a visit to Washington. "I see Crimea as an element in a greater pattern" of Russian strategy, he told an audience at the Brookings Institution. Moscow´s

President Obama on March 13 signed an order directing the Labor Department to expand the class of employees entitled to overtime pay. Currently, if a salaried employee makes more than $24,000 a year and is part of management—if he manages the business, directs the work of other employees, and has the authority to hire and fire—that employee is exempt from overtime coverage. The president wants to raise this salary threshold, perhaps as high as $50,000, demoting entry-level managers to glorified crew members by replacing their incentive to get results with an incentive to log more hours. At issue is a

: Checking out Rembrandts and checking in with European allies, President Obama seems blind to the rubble around him. The U.S. leadership vacuum has left NATO as ravaged as a post-World War II battlefield. In May 1945, a sizable force of Allied bombers flew photographers over European cities to document the destruction of what was then, and remains, the worst war in history. Their images of urban craters and flattened buildings are permanent reminders of the evils of totalitarianism. One can´t help wondering, if Barack Obama had been on board, whether he would have looked down and remarked on the day´s pleasant

Is the United States, the world´s lone superpower, starting to fade, losing its way, its influence and its luster? It´s an issue that´s gaining traction and perhaps starting to touch the American soul, with the U.S. retreat on the world stage a possible issue in this year´s mid-term elections, according to a recent article in the Washington Post. Our polling shows that Americans do feel the glory is fading and that the country has been in decline for about a decade now. In this month´s IBD/TIPP Poll, nearly two-thirds (65%) think America´s global influence is on the wane. And the sentiment is

Democrats have been waiting for ObamaCare to become popular for four years. And counting. Congressional leaders and senior White House advisers have been saying since 2010 that public opinion will turn their way sometime soon. Be patient, they have told anxious members of their party again and again. “I think as people learn about the bill, and now that the bill is enacted, it’s going to become more and more popular,” Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” in March 2010. “So I predict ... by November those who voted for healthcare will find it an asset, those who

President Barack Obama is seeking to abolish two highly successful missile programs that experts say have helped the U.S. Navy maintain military superiority for the past several decades. The Tomahawk missile program—known as “the world’s most advanced cruise missile”—is set to be cut by $128 million under Obama’s fiscal year 2015 budget proposal and completely eliminated by fiscal year 2016, according to budget documents released by the Navy. In addition to the monetary cuts to the program, the number of actual Tomahawk missiles acquired by the United States would drop significantly—from 196 last year to just 100 in 2015. The number

The 2012 Republican presidential nominee said Obama didn´t have the foresight to anticipate Russia´s moves and should have been working earlier with allies to make clear the penalties that Russia would face if it moved into Ukraine. Romney did acknowledge that such steps may not have been enough though to hold back Russia President Vladimir Putin. "Had we communicated those things, there´s always

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the sweeping acceptance of gay marriage in recent years is owed in large part to Christianity. Rejecting the rigidly hierarchical and stratified societies of the ancient world, Jesus Christ taught the equal dignity of all persons, proclaimed that the meek shall inherit the earth, and declared that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The Western world has been working out the logic of these subversive teachings ever since, with the institutional transformation of marriage being the latest, though surely not the last, example of its social, moral,
