Obama’s Gifts to New York
New York Sun, by Editorial

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 2/25/2013 2:49:16 PM

What a surprise in the White House list of federal outlays that will be cut in New York State because of the sequester. It turns out that the impact will be largely positive in a state with one of the highest combined tax rates in the country. The White House list is too long to include in its entirety. But the President has cut shrewdly, and here is a sense of it. One big gain will be a $42.7 million savings that taxpayers won’t have to pay to teachers and schools.

Mayor Bob Filner is ending his intensive behavioral therapy triggered by sexual harassment allegations earlier than expected while officials on Friday said the locks had been changed at his office.Meanwhile, his political support continued to crater as his last two allies on the City Council called for his resignation, making it unanimous, and U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer reiterated her call for him to step down in an impassioned open letter to the mayor.

Matt Damon Slams President Obama:
‘He Broke Up With Me’
Mediaite, by Andrew Kirell    Original Article

Famed actor Matt Damon is so disillusioned with President Obama that he almost feels as though the president dumped him. “He broke up with me,” Damon told BET in an interview published on the network’s site Thursday afternoon. Damon was famously a big supporter of Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, but that relationship has soured over the last five years, especially after this year’s big revelations about the NSA secretly collecting the metadata of millions of American citizens.

Moral Victory Is Total Victory

Let me just add one important observation to David’s splendid and much remarked upon essay yesterday about why and how the U.S. was victorious against Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany in World War II. Yes, we were ruthless in prosecuting the war — not only in Japan, with the atomic destruction of two cities and the firebombing of Tokyo (for a brilliant fictional treatment of the latter, be sure to read James Dickey’s To the White Sea), but also in the near-demolition of Germany as well. Every major city in Germany was destroyed and both Hamburg and Dresden

A Revealing Hour in Harlem

NEW YORK -- It was just a few minutes into Anthony Weiner´s door-to-door canvass of a Harlem public housing complex Thursday night, and the New York City mayoral candidate was already agitated. As he scanned his staff-prepared list of apartment numbers and corresponding residents´ names, the candidate shook his head in disapproval. "This is no good, the way you have this organized," he said to one of two young, female aides who were accompanying him. “This is N.G. -- not great.” A few minutes later, Weiner remained fixated on the quality of his staff’s advance work,

Breaking Through Limits on Spying

Apparently no espionage tool that Congress gives the National Security Agency is big enough or intrusive enough to satisfy the agency’s inexhaustible appetite for delving into the communications of Americans. Time and again, the N.S.A. has pushed past the limits that lawmakers thought they had imposed to prevent it from invading basic privacy, as guaranteed by the Constitution.

Dear Lawrence O´Donnell, Don´t

Tonight, I went on Lawrence O´Donnell´s show, and Lawrence O´Donnell yelled at me. Or, rather, he O´Reilly´d at me. That O´Donnell interrupted and harangued and mansplained and was generally an angry grandpa at me is not what I take issue with, however. What bothers me is that, look: your producers take the time to find experts to come on the show, answer your questions, and, hopefully, clarify the issue at hand.

Jeff Bezos, The Post’s incoming

In the relentlessly efficient world of Jeffrey P. Bezos, Amazon employees quickly learn when they have overtaxed the attention of their chief executive. He quietly pulls out his smartphone and starts replying to e-mails. In extreme cases, Bezos will walk out. This demanding style is as much a signature of the Amazon.com founder as his famously long-term approach to developing new products or services, say people who have worked with the man who this week agreed to buy The Washington Post for $250 million. Bezos (pronounced “BAY-zohs”) has developed a precise and inventive approach to management

Nobody tells Oprah she can´t afford a handbag. Oprah Winfrey is one of the richest entertainers in the world, thanks to her willdly successful 25-season run on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and her latest media foray with the newly revitalized Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). The entertainer earned an estimated $77 million from June 2012 to June 2013 alone, according to Forbes, but she says she still experiences racism because she is African American. Take this latest incident in Switzerland, where "The Butler" star went to attend the nuptials of good friend and singer Tina Turner last month.

The Washington Post is a legend in the minds of the Washington elite, so its financial decline has caused quiet panic. As NPR media reporter David Folkenflik put it, “You think of stories like the Pentagon Papers, Watergate, these are all stories where The Washington Post led the nation’s understanding, the world’s understanding of some major issues.” Outside the liberal media, you wonder how long Post fans can wallow in their Nixon-crumbling polyester “glory days” in the early 1970s. But nostalgia ruled as the Graham family sold the Post to Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon.com.

During his Wednesday appearance on Jay Leno´s "Tonight Show,´ President Obama made three factual gaffes; one of them involved the claim that cities not found along the Gulf of Mexico are. Were Obama a Republican, these gaffes would have led news coverage for the next forty-eight hours. Not only did most of the media ignore or downplay these gaffes; the Associated Press went so far as to cover one of them up. In its coverage Thursday, rather than point out the president´s geographical error, the wire service made it look as though no error was made.

During a press conference yesterday, President Obama revealed the existence of a sealed indictment in the Benghazi attacks in Libya on September 11, 2012, leaving some experts questioning whether the president broke the law. Federal law states that ´no person may disclose [a sealed] indictment´s existence,´ and that doing so may be ´punished as a contempt of court,´ a charge that carries a minimum sentence of six months prison. The announcement came as a surprise to some insiders, as the existence of a sealed indictment has not been publicly confirmed or denied by law enforcement or

The famous Democrats have been frequent visitors to the expensive summer getaway in Long Island, and rented the same beachfront house in 2011 and 2012. President Barack Obama announced Friday afternoon that the White House will publicly release a summary of the legal authorities through which the National Security Agency conducts its controversial surveillance programs. ´Given the history of abuse by governments,´ he said, it is important to explain how such a program is managed, and - equally important - what it may not do. He described his working relationship with Vladimir Putin as ´candid´ and ´blunt,´ and seemed to dismiss concerns that the Russian president´s body language indicated a lack of willingness to work with the United States.
