| Montreal -- Quebec´s language minister said Saturday that her office will "review its process" after a series of embarrassing language inspections at Montreal businesses caught international attention. Diane de Courcy acknowledged that 13 countries reported on the story about an inspector with Quebec´s language office, the OQLF, who told a Montreal restaurant owner that the menu was too Italian because it didn´t contain the French translation for the word "pasta." After heavy public criticism and embarrassing international attention, the OQLF relented and admitted its inspector showed "an excess of zeal." "We will from now on apply moderation, but also judgement,"

Comments: What is it with the French being so paranoid about letting other languages "corrupt" their own?

Holy crap! You mean we got an entire *country* of Bloomberg-class-busy-bodies just North of the border?
The horror! The horror!
But hey...take our NYC Mayor! Please! He´s your kind of buffoon! (sorry for the lack of French translation...)

The French have ceded everything so far. They might as well give up their language too and speak Farsi.

The Froggies do this every time they are caught out when the light comes on. They will get their revenge later, quietly in the dark. Spoilt child Quebec is a prime example of liberalism gone crazy.

I have spent considerable time in French Canada. Over the years I have watched their infrastructure slowly crumble as they moved away from the Nation. In the beginning there was excitement and plenty of pride. Then I noticed snide remarks during the French language portion of a given tour aimed at the English that were totally absent during the English recitation. Lots of little things but last trip to Quebec City I brought my youngest child. Her reaction was she never wants to go back. This made be very sad because I love it there and have many happy memories. My daughter lives in Italy now and has spent long periods in France and Spain so language wasn´t the problem. I think she had a hard time understanding why the citizens of Quebec were defensive and so Separatist while sitting smack dab in the middle of their country.the logic escapes her. I being so old try to understand that the québécois of the seventies thought they were doing the right thing. What a mess! Now they must send their children off to English speaking Summer Camps if they can afford it to educate them for better jobs outside the Province.

Of course you could just stay here and enjoy a FEMA camp.

Looking back to the War of 1812, it was a lucky thing that US forces were decisively beaten in their attempt to defeat and annex Quebec. We have enough victimology here with blacks (NAACP, Southern Povert Law center, JJ, Rev. Al, etc) and hispanics (La Raiza) and muslims (CAIR). We don´t need French whiners too.

While extending the payroll tax cut through the end of last year, members of Congress last fall took what many feel was a long overdue whack at the cost of their retirement plan. They bumped up the rate at which federal employees contribute to their pension plan, saving an estimated $15 billion over the next 11 years. They also made sure that none of the increase applied to themselves. Anyone in service before the law went into effect would pay into the pension plan at the old rate. In his letters, Guantánamo Bay prisoner Shaker Aamer appeals in desperation to his captors and the outside world: "Please … torture me in the old way. Here they destroy people mentally and physically without leaving marks." (Snip) Despite running on an explicit campaign promise to shut down the island prison which has become a symbol of the abuses of the "war on terror", President Obama has continued to preside over its operation. Mindful of the repeated rounds of cuts the military has already endured, Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, recently delivered a grim warning: "If you want [the military] to be doing what it´s doing today, then we can´t give you another dollar." His worries reflect reductions that started in 2009 and have reached crippling levels, even in President Obama´s proposals to avert sequestration. I take the general at his word, but I am concerned that the president does not. Sequester hurts national security, not just because 50% of the cuts fall on the military´s 18% share of the overall

A Texas high school student has filed a federal lawsuit against her school and her teachers after she was punished for refusing to salute and recite the Mexican pledge of allegiance. The Thomas More Law Center filed the suit on behalf of Brenda Brinsdon alleging the McAllen Independent School District violated the 15-year-old girl’s constitutional rights when she was forced to recite the Mexican pledge and sing the Mexican national anthem. Brinsdon, who is the daughter of a Mexican immigrant and an American father, refused. She believed it was un-American to pledge a loyalty oath to

Conservative movie lovers didn´t suffer any serious Red State taunts during the just-wrapped Academy Awards telecast. Michael Moore wasn´t on hand to bash the GOP, and show host Seth MacFarlane trained his immature wit on George Clooney, breast-baring actresses and the show´s ridiculous length. And then it came time to announce the Best Picture winner, and Jack Nicholson stepped on stage to do the honors. Only Nicholson, and the show´s organizers, had something else in mind. A new global campaign to persuade nations to ban "killer robots" before they reach the production stage is to be launched in the UK by a group of academics, pressure groups and Nobel peace prize laureates. Robot warfare and autonomous weapons, the next step from unmanned drones, are already being worked on by scientists and will be available within the decade, said Dr Noel Sharkey, a leading robotics and artificial intelligence expert and professor at Sheffield University. He believes that development of the weapons is taking place in an effectively unregulated environment, with little attention being paid to moral implications and

It could have been a career-ending moment. Given the task of delivering the official Republican response to Barack Obama´s state of the union speech last week, rising star Senator Marco Rubio made a catastrophic gaffe. Republicans have a problem with young people 18-29. Democrats have a problem with seniors over 65. The story taken from this dichotomy is popular and simple enough: Republicans are the party of crusty old folks who are going to die, and Democrats are the party of the youth, who will lead a continued resurgence into office. I´m not so sure about this story; (snip) Indeed, if you came of age during the Franklin D Roosevelt administration, you are more Democratic than the nation as a whole. Middle class in the U.S. can mean something very different depending on where you call your home state. Census bureau numbers show a shocking disparity in the definition of ´middle income´ - with Maryland boasting an average of $67,469 and Mississippi posting an appallingly low $39,078, a difference of $28,391. Debate over the definition of middle class comes after President Obama´s State of the Union address this week. He detailed his plan to get the middle class back on track, mentioning the term a total of 8 times in his speech on Tuesday. ´It is our generation´s task, then, to

Michelle Obama has admitted that she is already tired of the bangs she first sported in January. The First Lady said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: ´Bangs are a day-by-day proposition. President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Ms. Smith first relayed how her son, prior to the attack, requested additional security in advance and warned the State Department: He did tell them, ahead of time, he typed it into his little typewriter over there,

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

No one is more preoccupied these days with Hillary Clinton´s 2016 plans than the Beltway political class—not even the former presidential candidate herself. To hear some tell it, her decision will be dispositive for all other Democrats thinking of entering the race.
