Detroit — Three months after an FBI raid, the Detroit Public Library has fired one of its top administrators at the center of the federal investigation over kickbacks. Chief Administrative Officer Tim Cromer had been on paid leave from his $145,323-a-year post since mid-November, when the FBI raided his office at the library´s main branch and his West Bloomfield Township home. (Snip) The November raid came after a series of stories in The News highlighting allegations of mismanagement, nepotism and cost overruns. Cromer first attracted scrutiny in 2011 when library officials considered

This is the guy who had stainless steel trash cans installed at the library, for a mere thousand dollars a pop. Hmmm... Detroit ... Skin color couldn´t possibly have anything to do with how he got that job.

Detroit keeps illustrating how difficult it is to clean up a well entrenched, bad government.

And face it, even an informed voter in Detroit may make the wrong choices. He/she is faced with a deluge of outright lies and misleading campaign material.

Five of the six family members — including two toddlers — injured in a house explosion on Detroit’s east side Thursday night are still recovering after suffering severe burns from the fire that leveled the house. It may surprise some Americans to learn that almost one-quarter of the people living in Switzerland are foreigners. Even so, just over 50 percent voted last month to cap immigration, which, unchecked, could leave indigenous Swiss a minority in 50 years. Newsweek´s headline over the story was typical: "Switzerland´s Sudden Fear of Immigrants." Fear. Immigrants. The German publication Spiegel Online wrote also about "scaremongering." The enlightened reader´s thought-bubble is now supposed to register the word "racism." But was it really "fear of immigrants" -- read: "racism" -- that drove sufficient numbers of Swiss to the polls to check their own

Washington — Americans barely increased their spending in February following a weak January performance, strong evidence that the severe winter will hold back the economy in the first quarter. Consumer spending rose 0.3 percent in February following an even weaker 0.2 percent rise in January, the Commerce Department reported Friday. The January performance was cut in half from an initial estimate of 0.4 percent. For February, spending on autos and other durable goods actually fell and much of the small gain reflected higher utility payments to pay heating costs. According to an affidavit released this week, the FBI became aware of possible illegal activity of then-City Council member Cannon as early as August 2010. By the time Cannon was sworn as the city’s top elected leader, undercover agents posing as real estate developers had flown him and his wife to Las Vegas and paid him almost $30,000 in bribes, prosecutors say. Obamacare supporters are taking a bit of a victory lap today after yesterday’s administration announcement that six million people have signed up for private plans under the law, equaling the revised projection put out by the Congressional Budget Office after the botched launch of the exchanges last October. It’s a weak cause for celebration, given that success, according to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, was originally "at least" seven million people getting covered under the law by the end of March.
