A potentially explosive report has linked the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI to the discovery of a network of gay prelates in the Vatican, some of whom – the report said – were being blackmailed by outsiders. The pope´s spokesman declined to confirm or deny the report, which was carried by the Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica. The paper said the pope had taken the decision on 17 December that he was going to resign – the day he received a dossier compiled by three cardinals delegated to look into the so-called "Vatileaks" affair. Last May Pope Benedict´s butler, Paolo Gabriele,
I have to admit I wondered about this. I remember Pope John Paul XXIII. He was on his deathbed and we got reports of what he was seeing as he died. Why does this pope have to quit if he´s so sick? All the other popes stayed til they died.
The butler betraying family secrets and blackmail, sounds more like an episode of Downton Abbey? Who wouldn´t want to retire and let someone else handle this new scandal. At least he had the integrity to investigate it. The good news is that they feel like there are too many people watching out for young boys now, so they are turning to adult men. The surprise is that anyone still contributes their hard earned money to support this.
The sooner they announce a new, traditional Pope, the better. The cafeteria Roman Catholics can howl and threaten to leave the church (which they don´t attend, save Easter) and the rest of us will go on. Ah, to be liberal and live without principles.
#13--I think you are misunderstanding staff´s comment. The leftist attack on the church is unending , and it is typical of them to look for something nasty in the Pope´s decision . Scurrilous innuendoes are in their dna, and staff knows this.
just a WAG, 13 - but I read it as a comment on the media making the leap from an elderly ailing man choosing to retire alllll the way to a CEO opting to get out of Dodge in advance of potential embarrassment and/or blame.
If the publicized ´´why´´ doesn´t fit their agenda, media will find a ´´why´´ that does.
There´s much we don´t know about the Pope and his resigning. I´m a Believer, though not a Catholic. I have respect for the Catholic Church and for the Pope. His resigning in the best interest of the Church seems fine to me. That there are sexually deviant people in the priesthood is a sad fact. And if the late Father Malachi Martin is correct, there are even worshippers of Satan within the priesthood. All of these negatives within the institution do not negate in any way the faithful service in God´s name that the many priests and the heirarchy have offered nor the faith of the Catholic believers. The Guardian is probably happy to see something negative in the Church, though I´d guess it´s something of a dilemma for the Guardian (and its readers) to criticize homosexuality. I´d think they´d praise it.
The facts are that Benedict began hinting that he might decide to resign a couple of years ago and the reasons have far more to do with the public duties of the Papacy than behind the scenes intrigue in the Vatican.
Please remember that in Church terms the idea that Catholic priests and bishops must retire - and that Cardinals over age 80 shouldn´t get to pick the next Pope -are very new developments, dating only from the 1970s. Reviving an old tradition that Popes may resign when unable to perform all the acts of their ministry is merely a continuance of these reforms. I applaud the Pope for recognizing that he is not indispensable and wish more people in all walks of life would follow his example.
People are living longer, that is a fact. Better to re-introduce retirement into the Papacy, than to have a Pope with dementia or Alzeihmers staying on with NOTHING in place to have him removed. The Church cannot ever be left rudderless. Benedict is doing the right thing.

When an 85-year-old person in poor health resigns as CEO of a corporation of a few hundred people, anyone who thinks about it says, "I understand". This is a CEO of an organization of over a billion people, and conspiracy theories abound.
I´m wondering why he´s the first Pope in 600 years smart enough to step down when his health fails.
The tabloids have descended on Pope Benedict´s retirement like buzzards gathering around fresh roadkill. The Pope and Vatican are currently too focused on the upcoming conclave and transition to be distracted by combating anti-Catholic rumor-mongering and Socialist anti-religion propaganda.
Remember the statement about evil flourishing when good men do nothing? Such is the state of our nation right now, in fact. But I have always been heartened by the history of our Popes in the Catholic Church. Many evil ones got elected throughout the ages, but somehow the Holy Spirit got us past the evil, and good men prevailed. I firmly believe that this good man, Pope Benedict, knows the history and magnitude of his Office, and is humble enough to let go and allow a stronger man to be out Pope. We have so much evil to fight in this world today. For instance, take this nasty, very typical msm article.
Let´s face it, anybody in the Vatican knows all about child molestation, covert gay activities. At any given time, it´s simply which one of these costumed guys takes the fall. Like Elisha Cook in THE MALTESE FALCON when Sidney Greenstreet picks Elisha to take the fall in their crooked scheme. Thomas Paine, author of Common Sense, the brilliant pamphlet that united all the colonies, the pamphlet that the communists took out of our public schools years ago, Paine wrote this about the Catholic Church. His article on the pretense, evil, of Rome, was published in both Paris and London, written in 1797 in a pamphlet by Thomas Paine, his answer to the restoration of Catholic privileges, A brief excerpt, "Were not they considered as the patrons of debauchery and domestic infidelity, and not as the patrons of morals? What was their pretended celibacy but perpetual adultery? What was their blasphemous pretension to forgive sins but an encouragement to the commitment of them, and a love for their own? Accustom a people to believe that priests or any other class of men can forgive sins, and you will have sin in abundance." Tom Paine saw the truth and wrote extensively about it.
#28 don´t think there is a need for that, many on that forum are of Catholic faith. #16 I am with you on what Father Malachi Martin had to say especially Jesuits. There is also another interesting theory out there, apparently in EU there is a warrant on BXVI and an apatite for all the church properties. Wonder if there would be enough faithful ready to defend the Church if the events repeat themselves...
I am not Catholic but a longtime watcher of the Vatican. The Pope is not only a religious leader but a world leader. Stepping into the role, one would imagine many secrets are revealed, same as for, say, POTUS. Perhaps the secrets revealed to the present Pope have him overwhelmed, especially at his frail age and state of health. Like Roberto Duran back in the day, he is throwing up his hands, with the comment of "No Mas, No Mas." (I always respected Duran for leaving what had become a circus.)
Thomas Paine...atheist...agnostic...i´ll get right on his readings and beliefs.
If the Pope decideds to retire..he may do so.It has been done before. I am sure he has prayed hard and long about this decision. Let him be...He has his reasons. I would rather see the Pope retire then not be able to handle the stress..it happens to the best of us..
There have been scandals in the Vatican for 2000 years. The scandals used to be illegitimate children fathered with mistresses, but lately, the clergy seems to be attracting homosexuals rather than straight men. I wonder if the church allowing women priests would change anything? Or allowing priests to marry? Asking these men to be celibate for life is asking a lot.
I bet B-16 is really ill. He had a fall, blind in one eye, deaf in one ear, looks like a TIA. His tailors have had to alter the vestments because he has dropped so much weight. Maybe he wants to write while inretirement or just put his feet up or go into the hospital quietly to get somethings attended to.
My read on it: most previous popes had a cadre of loyal subordinate cardinals who, as their health declined in old age, would honor them and administer the affairs of the church as would the pope himself.
Benedict finds himself surrounded by men of conflicting motives, politicians he does not trust. By abdicating now, his tenure will be viewed by history only for his actions and judgments. He knows his ministry and reputation could be besmirched by the actions of untrustworthy men acting in his name after he is too weak to carry on.
Perhaps, the Holy Father, because of his age and his overall physical condition feels that he can no longer effectively guide the Church through the times ahead and that the best way to SERVE the people of God is to spend the rest of his life cloistered in prayer..praying for the people of God and the leadership of the Church. We call him Holy Father, but we also call him the servant of the servants of God. He´s been Martha for most of his life, actively serving the Church, now, perhaps he is being guided to be Mary, sitting at the feet of Jesus and taking in His every word. Pray for us, dear Holy Father.
See "Ockham´s razor":""when you have competing theories that make exactly the same predictions, the simpler one is the better."
But for the MSM, then there would be no scandal to berate and try to undermine the Catholic Church with: which is the last approved prejudice in the decadent Western Civilization.
Incidentally: The Boston Globe which thought it would improve its bottom line by campaigning to undermine and bring the church to its knees, is itself well on the way to be consigned to the dustbin of history. Stalin once famously asked "and how many (military) divisions has the Pope?" Where is Stalin? Where is the Mighty Soviet Union?.
#28 ("Let´s face it, anybody in the Vatican knows all about child molestation, covert gay activities.")
From what alternate reality does this assertion emanante? The Vatican is a huge bureaucracy, which often has officials in different branches actually announcing contradictory things at the same time. There isn´t anybody who knows everything that´s going on there, except folks who are so obsessed with notions of Catholic Conspiracy as to spend all their time digging through the daily news and announcements, rather than get anything productive done with their lives.
The West inherited more than its legal system from the Church. We inherited malignant bureaucracy, as well. There is no ´puppet master´ behind the whole operation, no matter how satisfying that thought might be to some.
WASHINGTON -- An American who vanished nearly seven years ago in Iran was working for the CIA on an unapproved intelligence-gathering mission that, when it came to light inside the government, produced one of the most serious scandals in the recent history of the CIA - but all in secret, an Associated Press investigation found. The CIA paid Robert Levinson´s family $2.5 million to head off a revealing lawsuit. Three veteran analysts were forced out of the agency and seven others were disciplined. The U.S. publicly has described Levinson as a private citizen.
The powerful uncle of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been executed as a "traitor for all ages," the official news agency reported. Jang Song Thaek faced a special military tribunal Thursday and was convicted of "anti-party, counter-revolutionary factional acts" in a bid to overthrow the the communist country´s leadership, KCNA reported Friday in Pyongyang. The state news agency did not say when or how Jang was killed. North Korean media reported Monday that Jang had been purged for crimes that included faction-building, corruption, drug use and womanizing. He was considered the country´s most powerful figure after his nephew. State TV aired
Not only could you "shoot your eye out, kid," you might also go to jail for owning that BB gun in certain states. New Jersey and other jurisdictions make little or no distinction between Daisy´s classic Red Ryder BB gun immortalized in the film "A Christmas Story," and real guns. They must be registered and are subject to the same laws as any firearms. “In all honesty, kids who are charged are looking at mandatory jail time,” said New Jersey attorney William Proetta, adding that under the state’s Graves Act, a conviction could lead to prison time. “The only defense is to
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced this morning that nearly 365,000 Americans had signed up for private health insurance under Obamacare. The vast majority came from 14 states running their own insurance exchanges, while 137,000 came by way of HealthCare.gov, the much-faulted federal Web site that handles enrollment for the remaining states. But amid the rush to enroll as many people as possible by the Dec. 23 deadline, there’s a huge caveat that isn’t getting much public attention: For coverage to take effect on Jan. 1, enrollees must pay their first month’s premium on time. (The deadline varies
If you like your selfie, you can keep your selfie. Period. Unless, of course, you’re Barack Obama, in which case, you better delete it from your smartphone pronto, unless you’d like to spend the next three or four months dining on hot tongue and cold shoulder. You didn’t need a fake interpreter from an old Woody Allen movie to translate Moochelle Obama’s body language. So there they were, Barry, British Prime Minister David Cameron and the hot-wife leader of Denmark, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, hamming it up like it was the 25th anniversary reunion of the Choom Gang. Some Krazy Kids, horsing around, waiting for
The British security firm that failed to protect the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, from a terrorist attack a year ago that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens was told by the State Department to avoid the media, the latest example of stonewalling over the attack. In newly uncovered emails received by the public watchdog group Judicial Watch, State was notified that the firm, Blue Mountain Group, was being pressed for answers about the surprise attack. Instead of giving the group the green light to answer the media, State ordered the firm to go into hiding. “Thank you so much for informing us about
Regularly scheduled elections are a hallmark of the American political system. In 18th-century Britain, the monarch could call new elections on a whim, and our Founders saw in that arrangement a seed of tyranny. The Constitution they designed requires elections for Congress every two years, and the next such elections are less than a year away. This is good news for conservatives as they continue to oppose the Obama administration. This president has been tremendously helped by having a Democratic-controlled Senate for his first five years in office. Harry Reid’s masterful, if not entirely virtuous, use of Senate rules has
The gangster state of North Korea became a nuclear power in 2006–07, despite lots of foreign aid aimed at precluding just such proliferation — help usually not otherwise accorded such a loony dictatorship. Apparently the civilized world rightly suspected that, if nuclear, Pyongyang would either export nuclear material and expertise to other unstable countries, or bully its successful but non-nuclear neighbors — or both. The United States has given billions of dollars in foreign aid to Pakistan, whose Islamist gangs have spearheaded radical anti-American terrorism. Ever since a corrupt Pakistan went nuclear in 1998, it has been able to extort such
After three months and more than 50 phone calls, John Gisler gave up on buying coverage through HealthCare.gov. Gisler wanted to purchase a plan for his 45-year-old son, who has a rare degenerative condition affecting his coordination and speech. His current coverage through Utah’s high-risk insurance pool plan ends Dec. 31. By that time, the Obama administration expects enrollees to transition into health plans sold through the new health-care law. But so far, Gisler hasn’t succeeded in purchasing coverage -- but not for a lack of effort. “We’ve had three separate applications that failed to make it through,” Gisler says. “I have a
Remember when Bill Clinton was twice elected President as a "New Democrat" who wanted to get along with people in the private economy? Nowadays even writing in favor of ideas that Mr. Clinton supported can get you branded a heretic and banished from impolite liberal society. Witness the political tempest that blew up in response to the December 3 op-ed we published by Democrats Jon Cowan and Jim Kessler of the Third Way think tank. The former aides to Andrew Cuomo and Chuck Schumer, respectively, would be considered liberals in most places outside of the Harvard faculty lounge. But the campus
Maybe he went into sugar shock over a Danish pastry. The president of the United States, leader of the free world, standard-bearer for everything upright, good and wholesome about the nation he leads, lost his morality, his dignity and his mind, using the solemn occasion of Nelson Mandela’s memorial service Tuesday to act like a hormone-ravaged frat boy on a road trip to a strip bar. In front of 91 world leaders, the mourning nation of South Africa and Obama’s clearly furious wife, Michelle, the president flirted, giggled, whispered like a recalcitrant child and made a damn fool of himself at first
Washington -- A handful of Republican Party officials is quietly advancing a new batch of rules aimed at streamlining a chaotic presidential nominating process that many party insiders viewed as damaging to the their campaign for the White House in 2012, multiple GOP sources told CNN. In a series of closed-door meetings since August, handpicked members of the Republican National Committee have been meeting with party Chairman Reince Priebus in Washington to hash out details of a sweeping plan to condense the nominating calendar, severely punish primary and caucus states that upend the agreed-upon voting order and potentially move the party´s
New York — The anchor who might beat Bill O’Reilly gets her eyelash extensions applied one at a time, with tweezers and dabs of glue, about 90 minutes before showtime, right after a motorized gun sprays foundation over her face, neck, shoulders, collarbone and sternum, wiping out a galaxy of light freckles that spreads across her — Let me stop you right there. Photos of the day Uruguay legalizes marijuana, Kiev police pull back from protesters, aging U.S. prison population and more. Tuesday´s Photos of the day Would you write this way about a man? About O’Reilly himself? At least that’s what Megyn Kelly might ask at
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
In August 2013 I became very sick with what I thought was a cold. After a few days I lost vision in my left eye and I checked into the hospital. I soon found out that what I thought was a summer cold was actually Strep bacteria poisoning my blood stream. The bacteria blinded my left eye, ate a hole through my heart, caused five strokes on both sides of my brain and forced the removal of my prosthetic left knee. Dr. Lee was the surgeon assigned to perform open heart surgery. What was originally scheduled to last four hours ended
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
The health director who approved the release of President Obama’s birth certificate has died in a plane crash, Hawaiian officials said Thursday. Loretta Fuddy died after the Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft she was travelling on went down shortly after leaving Kalaupapa Airport at around 3:15 p.m. local time (10:15 a.m. ET) on Wednesday. The other eight people on board were rescued, Richard Schuman, president of Makani Kai Air, told NBC News early Thursday, adding that that there was no indication as to why the plane had crashed. Fuddy hit the headlines two years ago when she approved a waiver request allowing Obama to
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
Looks like this president can’t get away with flirting in front of his wife… It appears that first lady Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the way that President Barack Obama was acting toward Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during a ceremony honoring Nelson Mandela, and before too long, they switched seats. The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:
If you go down on the ice today you´re sure of a big surprise - a rare glimpse of 20 polar bears gorging on a bloody midnight feast. These photographs show a rare cluster of males, females and cubs all dining out on the remains of a whale carcass. They spent a night and a day stripping every last morsel from the mammoth sea creature. Usually Polar bears are solitary and would never tolerate being so close to each other. But with food in plentiful supply and bellies dragging on the floor they seem too lethargic to fight.Wildlife photographer Michal
Views of the tea party are at all-time lows in a new poll, as primary challenges to establishment Republicans continue to heat up Washington. Just 30 percent of Americans view the tea party favorably in a new Gallup poll released Wednesday, the movement’s lowest point since Gallup began polling about it during its rise in 2010. Also in a first, a majority of Americans had an unfavorable view of the tea party, at 51 percent. Similar numbers of respondents described themselves as proponents or opponents of the tea party: Twenty-two percent identified themselves as tea party supporters, while 24 percent said they
