A final salute from 300 strangers:
Royal Marine, 70, with no family
gets a grand send-off after vicar
rallies mourners on Facebook

Daily Mail [UK], by Inderdeep Bains

They’d never met him and they knew precious little about him. But hundreds turned out yesterday to mark the passing of a former Royal Marine who died with no known family . . . or friends. Some travelled hundreds of miles to the funeral of James McConnell in Portsmouth after a local vicar used Facebook to appeal for mourners.[Snip]Yesterday, in the biting cold, a procession through the cemetery was led by Royal British Legion standard bearers followed by a group of flag-bearing motorcycles from the legion’s riders’ branch. Two buglers from the Royal Marines band played the Last Post

Comments:
It was indeed a grand send-off made possible by grand people.

The Falklands War was within the lifetimes of a lot of living former Royal Marines, so you would think that there are still a number of marines who actually served with Mr. O´Connell out there?

Your worst fears are real: The South is overrun by zombies. Zombie ants, that is. They could be crawling in your backyard right now, possessed by a diabolical force controlling their every thought, a force that is, um, also found in beer. It´s a yeast-like fungus, but not just any fungus. This one gets into a carpenter ant´s mind, forces the ant to do its bidding, kills it, then pops out of its head to release more fungus spores for more ants to ingest. Which is, when you think of it, not really that much different from beer. Not that

There can be no excuse for shoplifting

Stores in the UK lose about £2?billion each year thanks to shoplifting. This can hardly be blamed on poverty, as alcohol is the thieves’ favourite item. The reaction of Vera Baird, a former Solicitor General who is now a police and crime commissioner, is to excuse shoplifting on the grounds that it is ‘due to the impact of both poverty and welfare reform, with people stealing what they were once able to take for granted’. [Snip] It is not ‘due to’ these things, but to dishonesty. During the great hardships which affected Mrs Baird’s Northumbria in the 1930s, the unemployed

We asked for it. We repeatedly voted for politicians who promised compassion. And now we have compassion coming out of our ears. And we moan that we don’t like the result. Yet we carry on with the same plan, madly expecting it to have a different outcome. It was ‘compassion’ that abolished the death penalty for murder, so forcing us to arm the police--who had until then been guarded from violent criminals by the real threat of the gallows. Look how compassionate that turned out to be. The lone armed constable in the dark and dangerous street now has to

The BBC has spent tens of thousands of pounds over six years trying to keep secret an extraordinary ‘eco’ conference which has shaped its coverage of global warming, The Mail on Sunday can reveal. The controversial seminar was run by a body set up by the BBC’s own environment analyst Roger Harrabin and funded via a £67,000 grant from the then Labour government, which hoped to see its ‘line’ on climate change and other Third World issues promoted in BBC reporting. At the event, in 2006, green activists and scientists--one of whom believes climate change is a bigger danger than

British taxpayers have unwittingly funded a controversial new manifesto for the European Union which demands increased rights for illegal immigrants and a universal income for the unemployed--whether or not they seek work. The 145-page manifesto also calls for a ban on fracking and greater powers for Brussels. [Snip] It is one of dozens of ‘propaganda projects’ on which the EU has ‘squandered’ tens of millions of taxpayers’ money. John Kerry is heading back to the Middle East next week to continue attempts to broker a peace deal between Palestinians and Israelis. His self-imposed goal is to reach an agreement by April. If opinions in Israeli and Arab media are any indication, however, not many think he can find success where others have failed. The intention is good, the equipment suitable, but the wind refuses to lift the kite into the air," writes Nahum Barnea in Israel´s Yedioth Ahronoth.

The pizza arrived, steaming and delectable, a smoked-mozzarella-and-sausage pie presented to Mayor Bill de Blasio like a gilded offering to a visiting caliph. The mayor, on a pilgrimage on Friday to Goodfellas, a venerable Staten Island pizzeria, smiled, nodded at his slice and then proceeded to do the unthinkable: eat it with a knife and fork. Cue the foodie firestorm. “Disaster,” declared a writer at New York magazine, citing the longstanding city protocol of devouring pizza, no matter how greasy, with the hands, and the hands only. One website called it Mr. de Blasio’s first mistake as mayor.
