| A battery that overheated on a Boeing 787 flight in Japan and forced the plane to make an emergency landing was incorrectly wired, an investigation has found. The All Nippon Airways (ANA) Dreamliner touched down in Takamatsu when the lithium ion battery sparked an on-board fire, prompting the worldwide grounding of the Boeing 787 jets due to safety concerns. Japan´s Transport Safety Board has said the battery for the aircraft´s auxiliary power unit was improperly connected to the main battery, which overheated during the flight. The board´s report said a protective valve would have prevented power from the auxiliary unit

You´d think they noticed that back when they checked the charge system. I suspect the Japanese, who made the battery, need for anything else to be the problem. Their reputation for best at everything was on the line.

Trying to understand this "report" makes my head hurt. Mr/Ms McDermott seems to not understand the system or terminology involved.
In the article´s diagram nomenclature it states electricity is generated in the battery pack. This cannot be since electrical power is stored in a battery, not generated.
As a former aircraft accident investigator (USN) I have been trying to learn about the Dreamliner´s electrical systems and the Lithium ion battery problem, this article doesn´t help.

This improper wiring story differs from a Reuters stoiy that the battery cells overheated because they were too close together.
Both could be right. I speculate that the wiring was correct and spacing was the problem. Just too much heat.
The wiring harnesses would have been tested automatically. And the connectors would make it impossible for an installing mechanic to miswire. It is very hard to believe only one harness was wrong with 50 planes in service.
But stranger things have happened.

I don´t think there´s a full scientific understanding of the lithium ion battery yet.But science never gets in the way of a left wing agenda item. The Volt would have already died off without Obama ordering government departments to buy them.

Most batteries are somewhat tolerant to a slight over-charge condition in normal re-charging. Lithiums are not. The key thing about lithium batteries is to make sure that each cell is charged properly. Therefore there is a sensor wire for each cell to monitor charge condition. If one cell is allowed to overcharge it can combust and start a chain reaction. There may also be a microprocessor within the battery to manage the charge condition. Charging lithiums is a tricky process.

Fifty years ago, the newly developed NiCad battery went through a similar experience with overheating. The problem was solved.
They are, and have been, safely used for decades.
I expect this lithium battery problem will also be corrected.

The team found that being left alone to breed on its own was key. The discovery raises hope that other damaged reefs could ´regenerate´. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs.
