Organic tomatoes really ARE healthier because they contain more vitamin C

| Organic tomatoes really are healthier than their conventionally grown counterparts, new research suggests. Despite being smaller, they are packed with higher amounts of vitamin C and compounds that may combat chronic diseases, the findings show. The reason for the difference is down to the organic plants´ tough upbringing, it is claimed. While conventionally grown tomatoes are are treated with pesticides and artificial fertilisers, organic farming forces the fruits to fend for themselves. The stress they suffer as a result promotes greater concentrations of health-giving chemicals, according to the scientists.[Snip] A U.S. review of research studies published last year found

Comments: Whether the above is true or not, the various organic tomatoes I grow are healthier because they taste significantly better than the usual store offerings and it makes me happy to grow and pick my own. And if mama ain´t happy, nobody´s happy.

I don´t know about that, but I am waiting for the farmer´s market and home grown tomatoes. There´s a very nice Amish farmer who has a variety of nice tomatoes and I always buy from him.

Even my farmer´s market has changed to those fibrous walled ones. I can´t wait for spring to plant tomatoes that are really delicious. Rutgers are my favorite but any home plant is better than those for sale. Now if I didn´t have walnut roots where the best bed could be. Die, die, die

#4, search online and you´ll find a large number of organic fertilizers. Personally, besides taking organic scraps and turning them into a liquid brew to pour around plants, I like Gardeners.com own brand of organic fertilizers. Five pounds of tomato-pepper-eggplant fertilizer is $13.95, lasts a long time, serves numerous plants.
#2, I do mostly container gardening these days. See Earth Boxes for a good product. Bought two last year, four more this year. They also have mobile stands for the containers which makes gardening much easier on a crumbling spine--also can be wheeled inside the garage if severe weather is forecast. I still have one pepper and one tomato plant still producing from last season because I was able to wheel their containers away from frosty mornings!

I have grown one tomato plant in my life. An Early Girl in a very large pot on the south (sunny) side of my open patio. Miracle Gro in judicious amounts (too much fertilizer makes for poor flavor) and picking the worms off with my fingers. The first tomato was in May. The last tomatoes were on the plant, still green, on Christmas Day. All were absolutely gorgeous and delicious.
No longer have a sunny patio. Boohoo.

If you bought it in a store, organic or inorganic, it´s garbage. Leave it for the dummies. Grow your own. After the first season, you´ll know everything there is to know for successful crops. (grow heirlooms.)

Agricultural tomatoes are grown for uniform size, resistance to blight and insects, ripening all at once, and perfect appearance. Taste doesn´t factor into the equation. Once you´ve eaten heirloom tomatoes, you´ll be spoiled for life. An added benefit is that they´ll produce until a frost, long after commercial varieties have died and been disposed of.

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf, especially since popular public tours of the White House have been canceled because of

The most successful politicians write their own obituaries. I have read a number of Baroness Thatcher´s today and wondered whether the writers would be surprised if they were told she would probably agree with most of what was written, even in the Left-of-centre outlets. This is because successful politicians so dominate the debate on the issues they care about--which were many, in Thatcher´s case--that they determine the course of the argument including the response from opponents. They do this by defining themselves in the public imagination by what they are against rather than what they are for, and leaving only

North Korea´s army was deeply split over whether to accept the command of Kim Jong-un, a former officer has revealed, giving a possible clue to the tensions lying behind the young leader´s calls to war. First Lieutenant Kim, 42, said he had been forced to flee North Korea after he murdered a rival officer as the factions within his army unit battled for control. "I killed a three-star company commander, the same rank as me," he said. "He was the head of the faction supporting Kim Jong-un. There were two fights. In the first fight, they surrounded us

Looks like there are too many cooks in the White House kitchen. White House assistant chef Sam Kass, who cooks weekly for President Obama, said Tuesday that he is facing a furlough brought about by crippling federal budget cuts. The chef, who is also the president’s senior nutrition policy adviser, is one of nearly 500 White House employees who are expected to receive furlough notices because of the so-called sequester. Hundreds took to the streets as macabre ‘Thatcher death parties’ were held late into the night across the country, organised by critics of the ´Iron Lady.´ Smashed shop windows, paint bombs and police being attacked were all consequences of the Left´s sick ´celebration´ of Baroness Thatcher´s death. In Brixton, south London, riot police were deployed as the crowds, which had been drinking since 5pm, started to become more aggressive smashing shop fronts and throwing paint bomb. In Liverpool, flares and fireworks were set off outside Lime Street Station by revellers, while in Bristol, seven police officers were injured--one seriously--as violence

Cometh the hour cometh the man. (Or woman). Except it´s not always true, is it? In 1940 we had Winston Churchill. In 1979 we had Margaret Thatcher. But I´m not sure even the most generous apologists for our current Prime Minister would bracket David Cameron in quite the same category. To the politician it matters greatly, for the primary aim of the politician is to gain and maintain power at regardless of what cost to his principles. By Sanford’s math and reading of Obama administration stimulus allocation figures, the Wind Turbine Drivetrain Testing Facility received $43 million and “created or saved” an estimated 134 jobs. When divided, the numbers calculate to more than $320,000 per job, Sanford said. Sanford’s comments came during a visit to a Mount Pleasant branch of Lyerly’s Cleaners, where he carried in a load

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

Margaret Thatcher had more impact on the world than any woman ruler since Catherine the Great of Russia. Not only did she turn around—decisively—the British economy in the 1980s, she also saw her methods copied in more than 50 countries. "Thatcherism" was the most popular and successful way of running a country in the last quarter of the 20th century and into the 21st. Her origins were humble. Born Oct. 13, 1925, she was the daughter of a grocer in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham. Alfred Roberts was no ordinary shopkeeper.
