Dog of war that saved soldiers in
Afghanistan heralded at Crufts

Telegraph [UK], by Richard Alleyne

Brin, a local mixed breed known as a Koochee Tiger, was adopted by the British army when he was found starving and abandoned outside a base in Helmand in 2010. The soldiers discovered he had an inborn talent for sniffing out danger and soon he began accompanying patrols around the area. It was during these patrols that he saved the lives of two soldiers when he barked to alert them to a hidden bomb that would have killed them. He was later captured by the Taliban during a raid and remained with them until later that year when a daring

Surprised that the Taliban savages did not kill the dog. They consider dogs to be "haram" and rank the lower than pigs. All because the "Prophet" told his followers that when the angels spoke to him they did not like dogs around because they attracted demons. I guess old Mo was a cat person.

Mohammed did like cats. Ugh. The cat is a wonderful animal who doesn´t deserve such an admirer. However notable cat lovers include such sterling men as Winston Churchill, T.S. Eliot, Robert E. Lee and Pope Benedict.

And kudos to the brave dog Brin. - may he have a long and happy life.

Regular readers will know Guy Verhofstadt – former prime minister of Belgium, leader of the Liberals in the European Parliament and now, incredibly, a candidate for the Presidency of the European Commission. I´m currently posting a series of his best lines on Twitter. Here´s a sample: "Our fatherland is now Europe. Our national anthem is Ode to Joy. And our flag is that of the twelve yellow stars on an azure background." "A clear victory for the pro-Europeans at the 2014 elections must herald the creation of a real constituent assembly, with the aim of establishing a truly federal Europe."

A few days ago, Richard Dawkins wrote to the Times to complain that they had referred to "Muslim babies". Because, in his view, a baby isn´t a fully developed human being so it can´t possibly be conscious of being a Muslim. Sigh. Richard Dawkins is just an Angry of Tunbridge Wells with a PhD. Let me define that. He is a prejudiced pedant who goes through newspapers looking for small things that irritate him greatly. [Snip] A Muslim baby is a Muslim baby for two reasons. When the New Jersey "Bridgegate" scandal first broke, I wrote a post arguing that Chris Christie´s presidential ambitions could be fatally damaged by this story of petty retribution in the Soprano State. My argument was that Christie´s credibility as a serious prospect for the White House would die by association – whether or not it was ever proved that he personally ordered the September lane closures that snarled up the world´s busiest bridge. That argument still holds, but I may have underestimated how difficult it would be for Christie to maintain his assertion – delivered in a marathon two-hour press

Robert Gates´s devastating critique of Britain´s military decline since the Government´s ill-considered 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review is as long overdue as it is welcome. The former US Defence Secretary, who served under both the Bush and Obama administrations having previously enjoyed a glittering career at the CIA, says the "fairly substantial reductions" to the defence budget undertaken by the Coalition mean that Britain can no longer viewed as a "full partner" by the US. So far as our national security is concerned, this is simply devastating. Close military cooperation between Britain and the world´s only

Angry residents in Charleston, West Virginia, have post disturbing photos online of the contaminated water flowing from their taps as they attempt to flush their pipes clean in the wake of last Thursday´s chemical spill. It is almost a week since more than 300,000 West Virginians were left without water after a storage facility leaked several thousand gallons of a coal-processing chemical located upstream from the town´s water treatment plant. While the water ban has now been partially lifted and some residents have been allowed to run their water in order to ´flush´ the system, many are still waiting for officials to

Dozens of cars left trapped by floodwater and landslides were shipped to safety aboard Royal Marine landing craft yesterday, and it was all thanks to a brilliant ten-year-old boy. Around 30 vehicles had been left stranded on a dead-end after a 20 metre stretch of road collapsed at Calstock, Cornwall, on Christmas Day. With repairs to the flood-ravaged lane likely to take months, it seemed there was nothing that could be done, until schoolboy Charlie Southcott came up with a plan to reach the marooned motors by water. AUSTIN, Texas — In October, Susan, a woman who lives in Willacy County in Texas’ southernmost tip, found out she was pregnant. She is married and has three children, and for a few weeks last fall, she couldn’t afford her birth control. Her condition, to her, was not entirely good news. “I weighed out the pros and cons,” she said. “But I didn´t want to have another baby.” Susan asked her gynecologist about getting an abortion, but the doctor said she didn’t perform the procedure.
