Powerful snowstorm bears down

The leading edge of a large, powerful winter storm descended on the western United States on Wednesday, dropping snow as far south as Tucson, Arizona, and snarling evening rush-hour traffic in Denver. Snowfall sweeping the southeastern corner of Arizona blanketed the saguaro cactus-studded high desert with several inches of white stuff, leading the Professional Golfers´ Association to cancel play at a tournament near Tucson. Now it´s our turn. East Coasters shouldn´t feel like they get all the storms. Even LA is bitterly cold. The Grapevine (the lone highway connecting So Cal to the Central Valley through the mountains) had to be shut down yesterday due to ice.

In our area they cancelled the ice storm drill because of the ice storm. That ought to tell you how things are around here.

Since when is 12 inches of snow a "huge" amount. It will snow that much in 30 minutes in the Sierras.

It´s a huge amount of snow if you´re not used to dealing with a foot of snow. A foot of it is an inconvenience to me in NE, but it can be disastrous for people whose roads, buildings, and other infrastructures aren´t constructed to handle it.

Stay safe, those of you affected. Keep off those icy roads unless necessary.

House subpoenas Treasury Secretary

Washington Times, by Stephen Dinan    Original Article

House Republicans on Friday accused Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew of obstructing their investigation into the IRS’s targeting of tea party and conservative groups, and issued subpoenas for more agency documents. Oversight committee chairman Darrell Issa sent a scathing latter to Lew blasting him and Obama for dismissing the GOP’s claims about IRS targeting as a phony scandal, saying that Lew has attempted to thwart his investigation. (Snip) The IRS came under scrutiny when its auditor reported earlier this year that the agency had singled out groups with “tea party,” “patriot” or “9/12” in their names for special scrutiny when the groups applied for tax-exempt status. The IRS has acknowledged it asked inappropriate and intrusive questions of the conservative groups.

A team led by a state-appointed emergency manager said Friday that Detroit is defaulting on about $2.5 billion in unsecured debt and is asking creditors to take about 10 cents on the dollar of what the city owes them. Kevyn Orr spent two hours with about 180 bond insurers, pension trustees, union representatives and other creditors in a move to avoid what bankruptcy experts have said would be the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Underfunded pension claims likely would get less than the 10 cents on the dollar.

The Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is pressuring public schools in this country to make special accommodations for Muslim students and to deny comparable accommodations for students of other faiths. For example, CAIR’s instructional material for teachers entitled “An Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices” advises schools to permit Muslim students who wish to attend Friday congregational worship (known as Jum’ah) to “request a temporary release from school.” In California, the Islamists have already won in their efforts to get special treatment for Islam in the public schools.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer won a battle with state lawmakers this week, defying most other conservatives in her party to get a key component of President Obama’s Medicaid expansion through the Legislature. The Arizona Senate voted Thursday to approve the measure 18 to 11. That followed approval earlier this week by the state House of Representatives. The issue had inflamed passions and divided the Legislature for weeks. Things came to a head Tuesday when Brewer called lawmakers into the Capitol in Phoenix for a surprise special session.

Barack Obama owes his presidency in no small part to the power of rhetoric. It´s too bad he doesn´t appreciate the damage that loose talk can do to America´s tax system, even as exploding federal deficits make revenues more important than ever. Not one word in the Affordable Care Act guarantees health plans will cover birth control products.

Scientists believe bergamot, a fragrant Mediterranean citrus fruit which gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavour, can significantly lower cholesterol. They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease. The study found bergamot could even be as effective as statins, used to control cholesterol but which can have side effects in
