Charleston’s civilian defense
workers bracing for furloughs

Post & Courier [Charleston, SC], by Schuyler Kropf

Original Article

Posted By:Attercliffe, 2/21/2013 6:12:28 AM

The sobering reality of next week’s budget cut deadline hit home Wednesday as thousands of local Defense Department employees learned they face furloughs if the automatic reductions go forward.[Snip]Projections are that workers would have to stay home at least one day a week for 22 weeks, probably starting as soon as late April. Affected employees would get at least 30 days of warning time. The loss to the local economy would be significant. Joint Base Charleston is home to more than 50 military commands, including the Air Force Base, the Naval Weapons Station in Goose Creek, and the high-tech electronics

Comments:
Staying home "at least one day a week for 22 weeks" doesn´t sound quite as bad as "at least a 20% pay cut for around five months."

A lot of the military elected this fraud. They can also tell him "thank you" for their predicament.

Woe to all the more important public sector workers who will get all the layoffs in Obama´s effort to resist any cuts to Gubmint spending. The useless paper pushers who would not be missed are safe, EPA and Dept of Education are safe. All the parts of the government that should be open will be closed and all the parts that should be shut down are safe! This is all a political game. The pubbies need to expose this and not allow Obama to play this game.

The two men said by Interpol to have been travelling on stolen passports on the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 that mysteriously disappeared on Saturday have been identified as Iranian nationals. A BBC Persia report quotes an Iranian friend of one of the men, who said he hosted the pair in Kuala Lumpur after they arrived from Tehran in the days preceding their flight to Beijing. The friend, who knew one of the men from his school days in Iran, said the men had bought the fake passports because they wanted to migrate to Europe. The pair were travelling on passports

Benjamin Netanyahu accused the West of failing to condemn Iran´s involvement in an intercepted weapons shipment on Monday because it wanted to delude itself that the country´s leaders had changed course. Standing beside an array of rockets, mortars and bullets seized from a ship that sailed from Iran, the Israeli prime minister said the international community was guilty of "hypocrisy" for failing to speak out while loudly denouncing Israel for continued settlement building. "At most I heard a few faint condemnations of Iran from the international community," he said. "In contrast if we build a balcony in Jerusalem we hear

A promise made to an ageing Sir Winston Churchill has been honoured after a kitten was given a home at his country estate. For his 88th birthday in 1962, Churchill was given a marmalade cat named Jock after one of his private secretaries, Sir John "Jock" Colville, who gave him the pet. The cat was so dear to the former Prime Minister that it was rumoured that meals would not start until Jock was at the table. He and his family requested that, after his death, there should always be a marmalade cat named Jock with a white bib and four white socks resident at Chartwell in Kent. It is regarded as one of the world´s safest and most popular jets, which comes complete with a range of technologies designed to keep it in touch with air traffic controllers on the ground. Fitted with an ASD-B flight transponder which, unlike the GPS in a car, broadcasts its location by sending information back to air traffic controllers every second, the Boeing 777 would appear to have the necessary technology to prevent it disappearing completely without a trace. Yet early Saturday morning, this is precisely what happened to Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, as it made its way, 35,000 ft in the air,

PASIR PUTEH: Tests on a sample of the oil slick found off the Kelantan coast reveal that it was not from the missing Malaysia Airlines MH370 flight. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) eastern region enforcement chief Datuk Nasir Adam revealed test results showed that it was bunkering activities. "This is information I received from Kuala Lumpur. The oil slick is from bunkering activities and not from an aircraft," said Nasir at the MMEA´s base in Tok Bali here on Monday. Officials at the MH370 operation coordinating centre in Sepang said this was confirmed by the Chemistry Department. On Sunday, MMEA´s

KUALA LUMPUR--Malaysian officials are poring over CCTV footage and questioning immigration officers and guards at Kuala Lumpur´s international airport, concerned that a security breach may be connected to the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. Suspicions that the Beijing-bound Boeing jet, which vanished on Saturday with 239 people on board, may have been hijacked or bombed have risen after at least two passengers were found to be using stolen passports, though Malaysia´s government stressed it was considering all possibilities. Malaysian investigators, assisted by the FBI, are probing the identities of four passengers in particular, two Malaysian officials with knowledge of

After vacationing at the $2,500 a night Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo this weekend, no wonder Barack and Michelle Obama look pleased with themselves as they returned to Washington on Sunday afternoon. The reunion of Romney´s political brain trust comes amid a burst of positive buzz about the former Massachusetts governor -- from favorable reviews of "MITT," the Netflix documentary about his campaigns, to chatter among some powerful GOP donors about another Romney presidential campaign in 2016.

The most dangerous parts of a flight are takeoff and landing. Rarely do incidents happen when a plane is cruising seven miles above the earth. So the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jet well into its flight Saturday morning over the South China Sea has led aviation experts to assume that whatever happened was quick and left the pilots no time to place a distress call. (Snip) The problem had to be big enough, he said, to stop the plane´s transponder from broadcasting its location, although the transponder can be purposely shut off from the cockpit.

CBS News investigative correspondent Sharyl Attkisson has reached an agreement to resign from CBS News ahead of contract, bringing an end to months of hard-fought negotiations, sources familiar with her departure told POLITICO on Monday. Attkisson, who has been with CBS News for two decades, had grown frustrated with what she saw as the network´s liberal bias, an outsized influence by the network´s corporate partners and a lack of dedication to investigative reporting, several sources said. She increasingly felt like her work was no longer supported and that it was a struggle to get her reporting on air.

“I told you so.” Those have to be four of the most satisfying words in the English language. And Mitt Romney has earned the right to speak that short sentence, over and over again, whenever he chooses. Not that he would — it would be “unbecoming,” to use one of Romney’s old-fashioned words that in 2002 had the mandarins of Political Correctness harrumphing about his “sexism,” I believe the charge was that time. But these days, Mitt looks more and more prescient, and his critics ever more deluded. First of all, Russia has become “our number one geopolitical foe,” as he put it
