Carney undercuts Obama’s

White House spokesman Jay Carney backed away Wednesday from his boss’ apocalyptic claims of imminent mass-layoffs if Congress does not stop the scheduled budget sequester by raising taxes. “Republicans in Congress face a simple choice,” President Barack Obama claimed yesterday. “Are they willing to compromise … or would they rather put hundreds of thousands of jobs and our entire economy at risk just to protect a few special interest tax loopholes that benefit only the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations?” he said Feb. 19. But pressed today by reporters about if the sequester would for immediately

Want fewer guns on California

What´s the best way to minimize the number of guns on California´s streets? That´s the question confronting gun control supporters after this month´s ruling by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals striking down San Diego´s restrictions on carrying handguns in public. That case was brought by gun owners who applied for but were denied permits to carry concealed weapons. San Diego will undoubtedly appeal the decision in the hope of saving its restrictive policy for awarding concealed carry permits. Lawmakers who support gun control might want to consider another option: Rewrite state law to allow people to carry guns

Author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza speculated to Megyn Kelly Friday night that FBI’s indictment of him for campaign finance fraud may be Alinsky-style political retribution for his anti-Obama film 2016. Earlier this week, four Senators sent a letter to FBI Director James Comey demanding an explanation for what they termed the “selective prosecution” of D’Souza. “I am a public critic of the president and I do recognize this has made me vulnerable to a form of counterattack,” D’Souza said. He added that Obama, whom he characterized as “vindictive,” had released a video response to 2016 on his website, proving the

Viewers are reminded that Time magazine has called her, "Poised. Stirring. Charming." Politico said, "every sentence she uttered was news." This week millions of the religious faithful in America are to be shepherded into the nation´s cinemas in order to watch ´Son of God´, a conventional Hollywood biopic of Jesus Christ that premieres on Thursday. Coming after last year´s HBO mini-series ´The Bible´, which garnered 95 million viewers, it would seem a fair bet that this film is pretty much guaranteed to be another hit. One Texas congregation alone has bought 9,000 tickets. But such displays of mega-church muscle only serve to conceal how far and how fast the ground has shifted under America´s Religious Right over the last decade

SOCHI, Russia— The head of Russia´s Communist Party held up a hammer-and-sickle Soviet banner during a flower ceremony at the Winter Olympics, leading to a confrontation with staff over violating Olympic rules that bar political statements at the games. A series of photographs taken Friday night shows Gennady Zyuganov in a group of five men in the stands displaying the historic Soviet Banner of Victory toward the podium while medals were being awarded in three short track speedskating events at the Iceberg Skating Palace. The banner was a replica of the flag raised by Soviet soldiers in Berlin in 1945,

After the shellacking of the 2010 midterms, Democrats vow this year will be different as they embrace super-PACs to raise millions of dollars that will be critical as the look to defend their fragile Senate majority. In fact, three of the biggest super-PACs in the 2014 cycle are liberal leaning or allied with the Democratic Party, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a non-partisan group that tracks money in politics. Are we obsessed with race and racism in our society? Before you answer the question, consider how issues of race are brought up in the media and discussed around the proverbial water cooler. Do we discuss the remarkable progress we’ve made as a country since the dark days of segregation and Jim Crow? Do we consider how blacks lived in the South in the not too distant past—like my grandparents, who ran the risk of being lynched for looking at someone white? That’s given way to interracial marriage no longer being a taboo. The Supreme Court didn’t repeal the statute

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, may be the brightest light to adorn the Republican Party in many years. He knows how to make the case for conservative ideas, pointing, for example, to the contrasting fates of Detroit and Houston to illustrate the superiority of conservative policies. So it´s particularly galling to see that rather than train his fire at President Barack Obama and the liberal machine that cocoons him, Cruz has become a one-man wrecking ball against Republicans. His most recent foray into sabotaging his colleagues concerned the debt limit increase. Because Speaker John Boehner sent over a "clean" debt limit bill,

Mr. Obama signed the stimulus into law five years ago this week, vowing it would help rescue the economy from its post-Wall Street collapse tailspin, and saying it would save millions of jobs. The CBO said it’s been successful at that, helping sustain between 700,000 and 3.6 million jobs at its peak
