Al Jazeera makes
major U.S. expansion

USA Today, by Martha T. Moore

Original Article

Posted By:KarenJ1, 2/20/2013 12:48:53 PM

Seven years after it arrived in the U.S., Al Jazeera is putting up its sign. As it launches a major expansion to become a full-fledged cable news channel in the U.S., the Qatar-owned network believes animosity toward its sister Arabic-language news operation has waned. Or at least it has dissipated enough to allow Al Jazeera to splash its name across its new Washington broadcast center, which is currently housed in a dingy, unmarked office building. "Imagine six or seven years ago, trying to find real estate for Al Jazeera in Washington.

Comments:
Bob Wheelock, a former ABC executive now in charge of setting up Al Jazeera America says "We´re psyched and if you watch us, you´ll like us."?? Really? This is really sick and twisted that someone is happy about this anti-American "news" agency being broadcast in this country. All the little future jihadis must be smiling. Thank you Al Gore. Our Founding Fathers have probably spun their way to outer space by now.

My mother dropped a bombshell on me at a brunch in 2001. “I’m thinking of getting a refresher,” she said while lightly pulling her cheeks back with her forefingers. I was aghast. My mom, now 72, is an age-defying beauty who has always looked 10 to 15 years younger than her age. “Mom!” I yelled incredulously in the dining room of the Century Club in New York City. “What happened to ‘Black don’t crack’?” Looking me dead in the eye while resting her chin on the top of her hand, she said, “Black don’t crack, but it sags!” With that hilarious

Reid: Republicans blocking unemployment

WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday accused Republicans of obstructing passage of the unemployment insurance bill because they do not think he is being nice to them. Another week has come and gone and the Senate still has not managed to pass a bill to extend unemployment insurance. Now, the Senate will recess and head home for all of next week, leaving the issue unresolved. But at a press conference Friday, Reid suggested that a recess might actually help move things along. “I think it’s probably a good idea that the senators go home, the Republican senators”

Unions back super-PAC

Labor unions are funneling cash to a super-PAC tied to a former lawmaker that is working to elect centrist Republicans to Congress. Unions have contributed about $765,000 so far to the Defending Main Street Super-PAC, which is associated with former GOP lawmaker Steve LaTourette (R-Ohio), according to Federal Election Commission records. The total, while small in the new big money era of campaign politics, is an unusually strong show of support from labor for a Republican venture. LaTourette was considered one of the more labor-friendly Republicans while on Capitol Hill, and those relationships are paying dividends in his new career as a lobbyist

Far below the Appalachian Mountains, in a space barely big enough to stand up straight, Bobby Combs works a job his father and his grandfather worked. Coal-mining is the highest-paying job available to him in eastern Kentucky. As he skillfully maneuvers a massive machine and rips into a seam of coal, though, Combs wonders if the family tradition ends with him. "It´s not looking good," he says, dirt smudging his face. Coal has come under the crosshairs of the Obama administration in the push to transition to renewable energy sources. Coal mines are burdened with a never-ending stream of federal regulations. A small group of Amazon.com Inc technicians at a distribution center in Delaware voted on Wednesday not to join a union, marking a victory for the U.S. online retailer which is strongly opposed to any kind of third-party representation for its employees. A group of equipment maintenance and repair technicians voted 21 to 6 not to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), in results published late on Wednesday. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew sounded positive notes about the U.S. economy Thursday morning, saying the nation is starting off 2014 "strong" and facing "economic tailwinds, not headwinds," thanks to falling unemployment and what appears to be progress on fiscal affairs in Congress. Lew said at an event hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations that over "the arc of the last half year, the trend of economic statistics — job statistics, confidence — it’s been strong, strong across sectors.” The budget deal reached by congressional negotiators in December "takes away some of the fiscal drag from the economy," Lew said,

The explosive photographs, reportedly taken in Fallujah in 2004, have already sparked a Marine Corps investigation, but many of the 41 gag-inducing shots are just too grisly to publish. Two pictures show a Marine pouring what looks like gasoline on the remains of enemy soldiers and another two images appear to show the remains go up in flames. Two more capture the horrifically charred bodies. The sick snaps were exclusively obtained by TMZ, who turned them over to the Pentagon last week, triggering the
