Auction of microcars
brings in $9.1 million

Madison, Ga. — Fill a room with tiny cars, then toss in a bunch of people with big wallets. Result: $9 million in sales. OK, $9.1 million, to be precise. When the gavel sounded for the final sale Saturday evening at the Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum, more than 200 cars, plus other memorabilia, had changed hands in two days of spirited bidding. Auctioneers thought the sum might hit $6 million; the total was more than 50 percent higher.(Snip) The top price: $322,000 for a 1958 F.M.R. Tg 500 “Tiger,” a bubble-topped, bug-eyed curiosity once manufactured in Germany.

Neat little cars, worth clicking the link to the slideshow for photos.

Caption to one photo says these vehicles were made with 3 wheels in order to avoid taxes levied on 4-wheel cars. Always a workaround!

I sure hope this guy has a way to protect himself from capital gains taxes. Maybe the fact that these belonged to a non-profit organization? Whatever it takes to avoid paying the cap gains taxes... otherwise he won´t be able to retool as nicely as he thinks.

This was an amazing collection that I never got to see, as I rarely travel down South. Absolutely world class. I love these little cars, but the smallest I am willing to drive is one of my Fiat 850 Spiders.

There were SO many models that I had never heard of. My favorite was the Zundapp Janus, a tiny car with Isetta-like doors on each end, but the two bench seats were back to back, and the engine was between those back to back seats in the middle of the car. So it almost looked the same coming or going, hence Janus.

So cool!

Veteran actor Sean Connery is urging Scots to vote in favour of independence, saying it is too good an opportunity to miss. The James Bond star claimed a vote in favour of leaving the UK in September’s referendum would “capture the world’s attention”. He added that he was “particularly excited” about the prospects that independence could offer the film and creative industries, saying these could be boosted by new inward investment, helping to create jobs north of the border. Sir Sean, who does not live in Scotland, accepts the decision over the country’s future should be made by “the people who

The US conceded on Sunday that Moscow had “complete operational control of the Crimean peninsula” and announced that the secretary of state, John Kerry, will fly to Kiev in an attempt to halt a further Russian advance into Ukraine. Senior US officials dismissed claims that Washington is incapable of exerting influence on the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, but were forced to admit that Crimea had been successfully invaded by 6,000 airborne and ground troops in what could be the start of a wider invasion. “They are flying in reinforcements and they are settling in,” one senior official said. Years before they resigned amid a scandal over politically motivated lane closures at the George Washington Bridge, Governor Christie’s top two executives at the Port Authority led a secretive campaign to quickly push through controversial toll hikes on the Hudson River bridges and tunnels by drowning out criticism, limiting public input and portraying the governors of New York and New Jersey as fiscal hawks who reined in an out-of-control agency. At its heart was a plan to have the Port Authority, an independent bi-state agency, propose an enormous toll hike — a $6 increase that would bring the E-ZPass

North Richland Hills, Texas — Chatting in the living room one night, Ron Orr gave his 15-year-old son Andrew a choice: He could stick with the Boy Scouts of America and his mission to become an Eagle Scout, or he could join Trail Life USA — the new Christian-based alternative that excludes openly gay boys. This was no small decision. Four generations of Orr men had been Eagles, including Ron and Andrew´s older brother. Andrew had spent years working toward Scouting´s highest rank, and was just months from reaching it. But the Boy Scouts had decided to admit gays, and

On Aug. 5, 2011, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey issued a jaw-dropping proposal to immediately raise bridge and tunnel tolls by $4 for E-ZPass subscribers and $7 for cash customers, followed by another increase in 2014. The proposed hikes amounted to a 75 percent increase for E-ZPass users and 112.5 percent for those paying cash. The authority also proposed PATH fares go up $1, from $1.75 to $2.75. The reaction was swift and angry, with commuters and lawmakers blasting the increases. Gov. Chris Christie, who said he had no advance knowledge of the proposal,

Paterson – City police officer Virginio Formentin made $132,269 in overtime in 2013, marking the second year in a row that he topped all municipal employees in that category, according to payroll records. A veteran detective, Formentin works on a special assignment with federal authorities that Police Director Glenn Brown said must be kept confidential. Formentin was on that same sensitive assignment in 2012, when his overtime total was $112,051. Payroll records show Formentin’s base salary is $89,292 and his total regular pay jumps to $107,724 with a longevity stipend. “For some of his hours, we’re reimbursed,” said Brown.

Hollywood star Salma Hayek and her billionaire French husband are moving to Britain. François-Henri Pinault, France’s third richest man, is relocating his family to London. Pinault, the chief executive of Kering, a luxury goods group, has an estimated fortune of £9 billion. The capital has recently become a popular destination for wealthy French, who are seeking to avoid a 75 per cent supertax introduced by increasingly unpopular Socialist President François Hollande. But despite the recent exodus of millionaires from France, Ms Hayek insisted that her family were moving to London for career reasons and not for tax purposes.

Washington joins five states, including California, Colorado and Connecticut, that provide coverage. But Gray says Washington’s rules will provide the country’s most comprehensive coverage.

We can probably get a good sense of it by considering the account of President Bush’s conversations with Putin set forth by Peter Baker in his excellent book about the Bush presidency, Days of Fire. It’s well known that Bush and Putin got on well at first. But when the relationship soured, Bush became exasperated by his talks with the Russian bully. Putin seemed to delight in debating Bush. President Barack Obama is warning Russia "there will be costs" for any military maneuvers it launches in Ukraine, a move U.S. and Ukrainian officials say they believe to be already underway. Officials say Obama may retaliate by canceling a trip to Russia this summer for an international summit and could also cut off trade discussions with Moscow. But it´s unclear whether those moves will have any impact on Russia´s calculus in Ukraine, which is at the center of what many see as a tug of war between East and West. "Any violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing," Obama declared Friday

The statement was made as Russian forces — including attack helicopters — appeared in peripheral parts of the Ukraine that are largely populated by ethnic Russians. There’s no evidence that Obama wants to get involved in what may become a war between the Ukraine and Russia. He did not threaten any significant retaliation if Russian force attack nor did he offer military aid to the Ukraine. He announced that Vice President Joe Biden — but not

President Obama´s proclaimed strategy to "bypass Congress" — most conspicuously his broad rewriting of the Affordable Care Act — has given unusual prominence to a fairly arcane legal doctrine: standing. Standing is what is preventing a potential blizzard of litigation against the president´s unilateral decrees, and ironically, it´s a doctrine liberal jurists have long decried. To challenge the government in federal court, it isn´t enough to simply believe that the government´s conduct is illegal or even unconstitutional. Federal courts can hear only specific disputes about the law as applied to particular people. To be heard in court, a person must have

Security Council spent the day trying to fashion a response to the rapid escalation of the Ukraine crisis after Russian troops took up positions throughout the autonomous republic of Crimea. Obama expressed “deep concern,” the White House said, and called on Russia to withdraw its forces back to its bases in Crimea and “to refrain from any interference elsewhere in Ukraine.” Putin appeared to have given little ground, according to a readout of the conversation from his office.
