Gun-free zone: Comcast cable
blacklists gun-related ads

Comcast Spotlight, the advertising and sales division for Comcast Cable, has halted all ads having to do with guns on its nationwide network. “Comcast Spotlight has decided it will not accept new advertising for firearms or weapons moving forward,” the company said in a statement. “This policy aligns us with the guidelines in place at many media organizations.” This month, Comcast acquired NBC Universal in a $16.7 billion deal reported by Media Decoder.

Comments:
The Washington Times has picked up the Story earlier posted from the Flint Michigan local ABC affiliate. I´m so glad that this is getting some national exposure.

Does this mean no more trailers for movies and tv programs showing gun violence?

As if the association with NBC is not enough to drop Comcast over, now they want to be sure by doing this?

No surprise there. Comcast owns NBC and MSNBC

Well, if anybody thought that Comcast´s purchase of NBC Universal from GE was going to moderate their views, this and the hire of David Alexrod probably should remove that thought from their minds rather quickly.

I don´t have Comcast, but I don´t recall ever seeing any gun-related advertising. I can´t think of a single thing.

However, I think this means they´re admitting that what people see on TV might have an influence on them. Interesting.

Can Comcast´s shareholders sue management over their business practices? Seems management is turning down a legitimate stream of income. What´s next, not showing advertisements for politicians they don´t agree with? (I know they already give free advertising to those they do).

Reply 12 - Posted by: Cavallodifiero, 2/19/2013 3:39:53 PM     (No. 9185323)

I like the idea that movies with violence should not be advertising since they involve firearms and killing without notice of who the good and bad guys are. Doesn´t that make crazy people want to do violent things?

I am a compost cable customer. There are other options but they all will eventually tow the pc line. Last night I watched one of their outdoors channels which is about hunting. They had ads for firearms and ammo. They also have hunting with bows. Guess that´s next.

A gun shop owner said firearm manufacturers, distributors and retailers are being targeted unfairly after Comcast announces it´s dropping all gun shop ads from its nationwide cable network. The cable company recently acquired NBC Universal and this is a long standing policy there. When a local ad agency recently placed an order for Williams Gun Sight in Davison Township, it was denied. Owner Tom Wright said he´ll take his business elsewhere.

North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. The report cited United Kingdom diplomats, saying Pyongyang was demanding the U.S. president personally call Kim Jong-un as one of the conditions to relieve the current conflict at hand. Itar-Tass also quoted the U.K.’s Sky News as saying North Korea currently has eight nuclear warheads.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Los Angeles — Some people have had it with TV. They´ve had enough of the 100-plus channel universe. They don´t like timing their lives around network show schedules. They´re tired of $100-plus monthly bills. A growing number of them have stopped paying for cable and satellite TV service, and don´t even use an antenna to get free signals over the air. (Snip) Last month, the Nielsen Co. started labeling people in this group "Zero TV" households, because they fall outside the traditional definition of a TV home. HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.
