President Barack Obama says his top priority -- the "north star" of his second-term -- is to do "everything we can to grow the economy and create good, middle-class jobs." And that means taking more tax money from wealthy Americans, on top of the higher tax rates that Congress went along with a few months ago. Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, President Obama said Republicans have a choice: "Do you want to see a bunch of first responders lose their jobs because you want to protect some special interest tax loophole?"
Comments: That will guarantee bipartisanship! s/o That is the last thing this miscreant wants. He´s beyond anything I have ever seen in my lifetime in this country. He behaves like a tinhorn dictator.
Good point #2. I know where I live the police, fire, paramedics, etc are paid by our taxes. I went to a city council meeting last year where budget cuts were debated so we didn´t have to lay any first responders off.
After hearing the litany of vital services that will be cut, people will die from lack of health care, children starving, etc, I am amaze at all that can be funded with the mere $60-billion that would be cut.
We just get more evidence everyday that Americans ought not vote for socialists to be president - bad things happen... I hope all those "low information voters" are enjoy 4 dollar a gallon gas now and going higher - when they whine, lets remind them that they voted for this... enjoy!!!
First, the Sequester was this idiots idea. Second, if all these things are going to be so catastrophic, why doesn´t dear leader show some leadership and compromise rather than continuing in campaign mode. Obama is the worst leader we have ever had in the White House, bar none.
President Divisive in action. in my opinion, Obama cannot utter a word in public without lying. at this point, maybe he is so used to it that he no longer even knows he is lying. It is just second nature to him or he is delusional. In the last four years the GOp and various of the Presidents own chosen councils have offered a number of excellent proposals on many facets of our society. He rejected every one of them, because Daddy knows best. which is why we are all looking FORWARD into an abyss.
The first thing a nitwit mayor says when the taxpayers refuse to float a bond issue to redecorate his office or subsidize his golf club membership is to announce that if it doesn´t pass the city will have to fire half the fire and police departments and leave the potholes unfilled.
This last "speech" sounded like an over-the-top sendup skit on SNL of a 13 year-old spoiled brat appointed "president-for-a-day."
I´d like to humbly point out that the federal government doesn´t pay any first responders. Under President Obama they have however invested billions in alternative energy companies, AIG, GM, Chrysler, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, etc. After bailing them out, his administration then ensured that the executives who had led them to bankruptcy got millions in bonuses. And this is coming up now because the GOP wants to ensure that the Sequester that he dreamed up, lobbied for and signed actually results in reductions to the growth of government. I guess the military fat cats are complaining it will affect their bonuses.
We have federal firemen ? Who knew? Will my state taxes come down now? Do we have federal teachers? WOW, can´t wait to see my real estate taxes come down. Will we ever see the dignity of the Office of President restored to its former high level when this ghetto guy leaves?
Obama is a naked liar and a charlatan! He has no problem whatsoever thumbing his nose at this country and daring us to do something about it. This is the most arrogant self-centered Marxist president in this country´s history and half this country likes it! Therein lies the real problem with Obama.
Same old Democrat threat. They will cut everything the middleclass needs first. It usually only amounts to a small portion of the budget. But the threat is to get the taxpayers to give in to tax hikes.
Instead of firetrucks and policemen they could cut: - funding for the arts; - the out of control free cell phones program; - over zealous funding for education that has only resulted in college tuition skyrocketing; - money going to green energy programs that aren´t really green - which is most of them; - Infrastructure projects which aren´t really needed but just pad the pockets of politicians with money that is laundered back to them - you can add more examples
As posters above have plentifully pointed out, it´s our local property taxes that pay for first responders.
Now I´m hearing a clip of Obama´s claim that "parents will be forced to find child care" because "teachers" will be cut in the sequester, too.
What "teachers," one might reasonably ask, is Obama talking about ? Public school teachers too are paid for by local property taxes.
I suspect Obama ia talking about Head Start personnel.
Which reminds me ... when is any MSM reporter going to ask Obama about his own government´s study that corroborated the findings of an earlier study that found that Head Start is ineffective -- with all measurable benefits to participating children disappearing by grade 3?
I seem to remember Obama vowed to eliminate "ineffective" government programs. The reality is, he wants to not only keep wasting billion$ on Head Start, but to vastly expand it as "universal" "free" pre-school.
These days you know what Obama is going to say before he says it. It´s like he has already run out of gas before his second term gets underway. The so-called sequester was Obama´s idea, put out there in an attempt to cow the wimpy Republicans to accept Obama tax increases to stop big military cuts, but it appears that the Republicans are not going to play ball, and that the sequester threat has backfired on Obama.
Obama certainly does not like that and does not want to give the wimpy Republicans any room to explain to the nation where and why the sequester idea came about. Now its up to the Republicans to shove this political hot potato right back on Obama.
After three years on a vegan diet, former President Bill Clinton says he doesn’t crave steak. But cutting back on bread has been tough. "Heavily processed carbs, you really have to control that," Clinton told AARP in a recent interview about his eating habits. The former president, now 66, went on a strict diet after a health scare in 2010, and he says he´s kept it up. "I just decided that I was the high-risk person [for heart problems], and I didn´t want to fool with this anymore. And I wanted to live to be a grandfather," Clinton said.
The House Judiciary Committee provided Republican members of Congress Wednesday with an immigration packet to help prep lawmakers heading back to their districts over August recess. “This recess packet has been put together to help you communicate to your constituents the importance of immigration reform and the House Republican plan to produce solutions that actually fix the problems that plague our immigration systems,” Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte wrote in the packet introduction. The “Immigration Resource Kit,” obtained by The Daily Caller, features four sections, the first three laying out the committee’s goals, starting with strengthening border security and immigration enforcement.
In an interview with the Spanish-language television station Univision, Anthony Weiner opened up (a bit) about why he chose the name “Carlos Danger” for his online exchanges with Sydney Leathers. “It was a joke in my personal life between me and one person,” the New York City mayoral candidate said. “I’m not going to comment on anything about the information that that person has chosen to release. They can do whatever they want, try to harm me in any way that they want. I’m moving forward.” Since releasing transcripts of her chats with “Danger” to a gossip site,
In a July 28 letter addressed to “fellow Americans,” the union of former Border Patrol agents called for Congress to deny amnesty to illegal aliens and cited “transnational criminal businesses” that have “representatives” in 2,000 American cities. “Transnational criminal enterprises have annually invested millions of dollars to create and staff international drug and human smuggling networks inside the United States; thus it is no surprise that they
We’ve obsessed over political wives for years—searching for meaning and drama in the ambition of Hillary Clinton, the privilege of Cindy McCain, and the travails of Elizabeth Edwards—but the press conference that Anthony Weiner and Huma Abedin gave on the state of their union felt like the moment when our obsession officially went overboard. “I love him, I have forgiven him, I believe in him,” Abedin said in heartfelt, halting tones, following her husband’s confession that he’d continued to sext with strangers after resigning from Congress two years ago in disgrace.
Michele Catalano was looking for information online about pressure cookers. Her husband, in the same time frame, was Googling backpacks. Wednesday morning, six men from a joint terrorism task force showed up at their house to see if they were terrorists. Which prompts the question: How´d the government know what they were Googling? Catalano (who is a professional writer) describes the tension of that visit. [T]hey were peppering my husband with questions. Where is he from? Where are his parents from? They asked about me, where was I, where do I work,
Four years after United Nations auditors declared that the U.N.’s billion-dollar program for moving people and equipment on peacekeeping charter flights was a mess, the world organization still spends too much to rent airplanes and helicopters, still favors a few suppliers of equipment over those who might want to bid for the work, and still doesn’t have the tools to keep track of its sprawling and overpriced system. Moreover, an examination by Fox News of U.N. procurement records shows that the results of the deeply flawed air charter system are hugely unfavorable to
I should be in a good mood. Really, I should… After all, I have a baby girl on the way, just purchased my first home, bought my first mailbox (oddly, I find this to be a very big deal), and it’s the middle of summer…my favorite season of the year (come to Jersey in February for the Super Bowl and you’ll see why winter doesn’t make the top three). Yet, there’s this tone that’s been set in the media lately that make me feel like we’re completely screwed morally as a country. And this isn’t an ideological column,
Unfortunately, the fall of Rome is a pattern repeated by empires throughout history ... including ours? A group of libertarians gathered in Las Vegas recently for an event called “FreedomFest.” We debated whether America will soon fall, as Rome did. Historian Carl Richard said that today’s America resembles Rome. The Roman Republic had a constitution, but Roman leaders often ignored it. “Marius was elected consul six years in a row, even though under the constitution (he) was term-limited to one year.” Sounds like New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg. “We have presidents of both parties legislating by executive order,
A House committee is set to examine hiring practices at a Department of Energy agency in Oregon that allegedly discriminated against veterans and retaliated against whistle-blowers. The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is holding a Thursday morning hearing regarding allegations of illegal personnel practices at the Bonneville Power Administration, a component of the federal agency that generates roughly one-third of all power used in the Northwest. Bonneville officials, according to a July 16 management alert report by the Department of Energy’s Office of Inspector General, engaged in “prohibited personnel practices”
Newly-installed Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said Thursday that the threat of a cyber attack shutting down the U.S. electric grid is the biggest worry of the Obama administration, not an electromagnetic pulse like the one the Earth barely avoided two weeks ago. "What I have to say is that the whole set of issues that could disrupt the grid are ones that we do look at. But our biggest focus, not surprisingly, is on cyber security in terms of disruption of the grid," Moniz told Secrets during a media breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.
If Congress passes a continuing resolution (CR) that defunds President Obama´s signature health care law, and the president refuses to sign it, any resulting government shutdown will be Obama’s fault, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said Tuesday on the Senate floor. "If we pass a budget that pays for everything except for Obamacare, and the President says he´ll veto that, it is he who wants to shut down the government. It is he who is basically saying, ´I will shut down the government unless it pays for Obamacare.´ And that is an unreasonable position.
Mark Levin, who hosts one of America´s top radio talk shows and is considered by supporters to be the people´s pundit on the Constitution, is rallying his 8.5 million-strong audience to demand an historic convention of state governments to halt the "oppressive power" of the federal government. The author of two New York Times bestsellers on the threats to the Constitution, Levin hopes his latest, "The Liberty Amendments," out mid-August, will spark the state lawmakers to tap a rarely used Constitutional provision to institute measures that would brake President Obama´s use of executive orders, bar thousand-page laws and
The former commander of special operations in Northern Africa told a closed-door briefing today that he was largely detached from events the night of the Benghazi attack as he was traveling at the time. The testimony of Col. George H. Bristol, USMC, Former Commander, Joint Special Operations Task Force-Trans Sahara, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command Africa, had been eagerly anticipated by members of Congress. Originally, lawmakers had been told by the Defense Department that he had retired — the actual date is Aug. 1, an “administrative error” according to the Pentagon — and that they didn’t have
FORNEY, Texas - George Zimmerman, the former Florida neighborhood watch leader cleared of all charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, was pulled over for speeding in North Texas on Sunday, CBS DFW reports. According to the station, Zimmerman was armed when officers pulled him over on Highway 80 in Forney, east of Dallas. (Snip) The officer reportedly did not recognize Zimmerman, who was driving a Honda pickup. Zimmerman told the officer he was armed and was then told to put the weapon in his glove compartment, according to the station.
Arizona Sen. John McCain was the Republican Party´s 2008 presidential nominee and he still wants the keys to the Oval Office. But he is beginning to sound more like a fan of likely 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. "She´s a rock star," he said in a newly released interview. "She has, maybe not glamour, but certainly the aura of someone widely regarded throughout the world," he added in a reference to her work as secretary of State. McCain, reportedly trying to win back his reputation as a GOP maverick, was asked by the New Republic
President Obama has been rolling up his sleeves campaigning across the country delivering a surreal stump speech message supposedly aimed at the middle class: big government works, Obamacare is manna from heaven, the wave of recent scandals are “phony” figments of the imagination, and all economic problems are the fault of the Republicans. Conveniently, he leaves out the bankruptcy of Detroit, a city run by his own party for more than half a century. His message is so stale and unconvincing, that even The New York Times and Washington Post have noticed. Both papers, usually loyal to Obama, remarked that
Gotta figure her lead would be even bigger without Joe Miller in the field here. Her nomination for the taking? Alaska should be a top tier pick up opportunity for Senate Republicans next year…but their top choice of a candidate is Sarah Palin. 36% of GOP primary voters in the state say they’d like Palin to be their standard bearer against Mark Begich to 26% for Mead Treadwell, 15% for Dan Sullivan, and 12% for Joe Miller.
Serial sexter Anthony Weiner’s wife partly blamed herself last year when her horndog husband confessed to her that he was at it again. Friends and family told People magazine that Huma Abedin was kicking herself at the time for bailing out of couples counseling and focusing more on their newborn baby boy. But, thanks to a new round of joint therapy that continues even now, the couple was able to put the relapse behind them. “They really became a unit, and she feels much closer to Anthony now,” a relative told the magazine. That’s a long way from how Abedin
Embattled Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner and an attorney in the Federal Election Commission’s general counsel’s office appear to have twice colluded to influence the record before the FEC’s vote in the case of a conservative non-profit organization, according to e-mails unearthed by the House Ways and Means Committee and obtained exclusively by National Review Online. The correspondence suggests the discrimination of conservative groups extended beyond the IRS and into the FEC, where an attorney from the agency’s enforcement division in at least one case sought and received tax information about the status of a conservative group,
Sen. John McCain — a Democrat? There was confusion Wednesday after the Arizona Republican mistakenly strolled into President Obama’s meeting with Senate Democrats at the Capitol. The room full of Democrats — who happened to be meeting in the same room where the Senate GOP usually holds their weekly policy luncheons — erupted in applause and laughter as the former Republican presidential candidate made his entrance. As McCain, 76, walked out of the Dem-filled space, reporters pressed him as to why he stepped foot in the room.
In an interview on National Public Radio (NPR), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said her new agenda for women will give mothers access to day care so they can “earn without carrying the burden of child care.” During the interview, aired on Weekend Edition Sunday, Pelosi spoke about her newly announced agenda, which is on her website, and is titled, “When Women Succeed, America Succeeds: An Economic Agenda for Women and Families,” a plan that includes universal pre-school and access to day care for working women, and an increase in the minimum wage.
In preparation for the release of Oscar-bait film The Butler, Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, and director Lee Daniels (Precious) sat down with Parade magazine. The film chronicles a butler (Whitaker) who works in the White House through seven administrations. Winfrey plays the butler’s wife. In the interview, Winfrey explained her sadness that so few Americans know about the history of the civil rights movement: “They don’t know diddly-squat. Diddly-squat.” She then said of the historic use of the n-word, “I always think of the millions of people who heard that as their last
In her first speech since taking over the Environmental Protection Agency, Gina McCarthy came out swinging Tuesday and promised to ramp up the aggressive climate change agenda laid out by President Obama.(snip)“Can we stop talking about environmental regulations killing jobs? Please, at least for today,” she said during remarks at Harvard Law School. “We need to cut carbon pollution to grow jobs. We need to cut carbon pollution to strengthen the economy. Let’s talk about it positively. Let’s approach this as an opportunity of a lifetime. There are too many lifetimes at stake.”
