How did Russia´s early warning system

Questions are being asked as to why Russia´s powerful missile defence radar systems did not detect the meteorite that exploded over the country on Friday morning.[Snip] In the aftermath of the impact Russian politicians called on the world´s powerful nations to urgently develop technology to spot asteroids and meteorites that threaten our planet. But with Russia having one of the most high tech early warning systems of any nation on Earth, many are wondering why the nuclear superpower was not able to detect the incoming object itself. Experts from the Russian Nuclear Forces Project have attempted to explain how

So,all we have to do is figure out how to disguise a nuke as being a meteorite and we can slip them by the Russians.

The ruskies have international egg on their face for missing this. They´re so embarrassed, they finally called Kerry back.

Actually,if you could figure out how to get a big rock to go 25,000 MPH,you wouldn´t need a nuke.

The USAF has had DSP since late 1970. It sees in the IR and would have seen the entry, but not the approach. By that time it would have been too late.

In astronomical terms, a meteorite is tiny. It doesn´t begin to glow until it hits the atmosphere and begin to burn. Of course no one saw it; it wasn´t visible until it was already here.

An entry vehicle from an ICBM has a particular range of speeds if it´s going to survive the process and reach its target. The protocols for the detection systems is deliberately designed to ignore meteorites, because we have dozens making re-entry every day.

RADARs also have a necessarily limited range. Sure we have RADAR telescopes and all, but that equipment is designed for looking at the ´Long View´ and would be useless for detecting ICBMs.

Did Scientists see this coming? If they did, considering its size, they probably rightly judged it would burn up on atmosphere insertion. Which it did. The surprising thing was that it held together for so long that it entered as deeply as it did.

This meteorite may have been amazing in its own way, but the questions being asked are asinine.

A man in Las Vegas who signed up for a state-approved health insurance plan in November has now been told that he didn’t have coverage for the first two months of this year even though he was paying premiums for that time. Larry Basich’s ordeal that has landed him with $407,000 in hospital bills is the latest example of the problems facing Nevada residents due to the state’s problem-riddled exchange system. On Tuesday, a state panel approved a $1.5million consulting contract in an effort to have a private firm fix the state’s exchange.

In a normal world the US Federal Reserve would barely cause a ripple by tweaking its interest rate forecast a year or two ahead. But we are not in normal world. We are facing a confluence of events somewhat like 1998 when Fed tightening turned the East Asian crisis into a global credit event. We all forget now that Alan Greenspan told emerging markets to drop dead at his Humphrey Hawkins testimony that year--saying he was more concerned about US inflation--and drop dead is exactly what they then did.
