Rick Warren’s Shadow SOTU
National Review, by Kathryn Jean Lopez

‘I’m not interested in politics,” Rick Warren announced to a small press gathering. While such a statement from a religious leader is not all that unusual, it was quite countercultural in Washington, D.C., on the day of the president’s State of the Union address. Warren, the Evangelical author of The Purpose-Driven Life, which has sold more than 30 million copies and been translated into more than 50 languages, leads southern California’s Saddleback Church, where he once hosted a presidential forum between John McCain and Barack Obama, back in the day. Warren is not shy about sharing that he

“We’re not going to agree on values in America. Because we don’t. We have different values. But can we all agree on freedom? Can freedom be a unifying factor? History proves that freedom is incredibly fragile and it never, ever, ever lasts unless it is nourished and protected and it is defended.” He says we can lose it out of neglect, surrender it out of fear, or “license it away.” “It is the duty . . . of every generation to re-preserve the freedom.”

Well-purposed statement Rick.

I am not a "fan" of my brother in Christ, Rev Warren. I have distinct theological differences with him. I found many things in "Purpose Driven Life" with which I disagreed.

Also, I believed that he missed his "Micaiah" moment (2 Chronicles 18) when he did not ask the pressing questions about faith that some of the 80+% G_d-fearing Americans wanted him to ask Obama in the 2008 Obama-McCain debate. I thought that McCain sufficiently opened his soul for us to inspect. As moderator, I thought that Rev Warren needed to ask questions of clarification to Obama. Perhaps, those who ears did hear, and those who had eyes could see. As for the others, I recall Isaiah 6:9, "seeing but not perceiving, hearing but not understanding".

Nevertheless he makes the strong case in today´s article.

WASHINGTON — More than 80 presidents of colleges and universities will gather with President Barack Obama at the White House Thursday as the administration kicks off a campaign to encourage low-income students to attend college. Robert Zimmer, president of the University of Chicago, Kenneth Ender, president of Harper College in Palatine, and Steven Bahls, president of Augustana College in Rock Island, are expected to attend, a White House official said. The campaign is being launched after the White House secured more than 100 commitments from schools, non-profits, foundations and businesses to further its goal. White House officials said only

A man armed with a semi-automatic handgun and a large hunting knife shot and killed a shopper and a store worker before he was shot by police at a supermarket in northern Indiana late Wednesday night, authorities said. Police remained on the scene in Elkhart this morning collecting evidence and have searched the suspected gunman´s home two miles away, police said. So far, they have no evidence the shooter knew either of the women he shot, who were 20 and 44, but they believe he planned the shooting in advance, a police spokesman said. Brookings Institution scholars, inspired by baseball statistics, conducted an analysis of the 113th Congress that points rather directly at the Democrat-controlled Senate as a the locus of congressional gridlock. The analysis opens with the observation that the House, contrary to expectation, passed twice as many bills as the Senate in 2013. Why? Because of the Senate committee process. "When we look at this category, then, we begin to understand where the problem lies: even in the traditionally collegial Senate, 87 percent of bills die in committee," Molly Jackman and Saul Jackman, of Brookings, and Brian Boessenecker write in Politico.

MOSCOW, Russia - Three Russian servicemen and four gunmen were killed in a shootout in southern Russia on Wednesday during a sweep for militants ahead of next month´s Sochi Winter Olympics. Russia´s National Anti-terrorism Committee (NAC) said the dead gunmen included a man accused of carrying out a car bomb attack in the city of Pyatigorsk late last year which killed three people. Russia is on high alert following two suicide bombings in southern Russia last month that fueled security concerns before the Olympics, which Islamist militants waging an insurgency in the North Caucasus have threatened to attack. House passes $1.1-trillion budget bill

Party leaders pushed a massive $1.1 trillion spending bill for this year through the House on Wednesday, shunning the turmoil of recent budget clashes with a compromise financing everything from airports to war costs and brimming with victories and concessions for both parties. The huge bill furnishes the fine print — 1,582 pages of it — for the bipartisan pact approved in December that set overall spending levels for the next couple of years. With that decision behind them, the measure sailed through the House with no suspense and little dissent — fueled additionally by lawmakers’ desire to avoid an

The makers of new horror film Devil’s Due weren’t content for the scares to be confined to movie theaters. They thought up a devilishly mischievous prank that has been fraying the nerves of New Yorkers and filmed the results for a YouTube video called Devil Baby Attack. There is absolutely no dialogue in the video – just screaming. And it’s not surprising. SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO - The producers made a remote-controlled stroller containing a horrifying animatronic ‘devil baby’ that suddenly sits up and emits a demonic, blood-curdling wail when approached. Anecdotal accounts of young college grads working as baristas, bartenders or retail clerks are widespread, provoking questions about the economic logic of going to college, particularly if doing so means taking on a lot of debt. Now come some economists from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York with evidence that college grads between 22 years old and 27 years really are finding it tougher to find jobs that require a bachelor’s degree than has been the case in the past. “Such difficulties are not a new phenomenon,” the economists say in an essay published in the New York Fed’s latest

It took a while, but the media seem to have finally noticed Senate majority leader Harry Reid’s unprecedented obstructionism. The New York Times reported last week on Reid’s “brutish style” and “uncompromising control” over the amendments process in the Senate. Why are more people finally catching on to Reid’s flagrant disregard for Senate customs? In part because conservatives aren’t the only ones complaining. Democrats such as Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota — who wants to repeal Obamacare’s medical-device tax — and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York — who has waged a highly publicized campaign to reform the way the military handles

Last month, the Paul Ryan-Patty Murray discretionary spending bill was unveiled. Sort of unveiled, anyway: it didn’t actually exist, but was summarized in a series of bullet points. Now the bill has taken tangible form. Here it is, all 2,860 pages, including explanatory statements: The House is expected to vote on the omnibus spending bill tomorrow, less than 48 hours after copies became available. No one will have read the law; this is government by press release. The National Security Agency has implanted software in nearly 100,000 computers around the world--but not in the United States--that allows the U.S. to conduct surveillance on those machines, The New York Times reported Tuesday. The Times cited NSA documents, computer experts and U.S. officials in its report about the use of secret technology using radio waves to gain access to computers that other countries have tried to protect from spying or cyberattacks. The agency has planted most of the software through getting access to computer networks, but has also used a secret technology that allows it entry even to computers
