The Human Genome Project involved $3 billion of government funding. A private venture was started with $300 million to work faster and smarter. When the private venture began to approach completion, the government project was forced to download their draft sequence and then President Clinton stepped in to prevent patenting of DNA sequences (the pot of gold that was driving the private effort).

Both private and public efforts are already under way to understand the brain. We can´t afford the public approach nor should be allow the President to steal the intellectual assets of the private approach.

Well, that is a scary thought! For the Human Genome Project sucked up the majority of the research money for 2 decades, leaving studies of new medicines, environmental causes of illnesses and other types of medical research to languish. Meanwhile no new medicines or promising approaches to treatment have come out of the Human Genome Project...but, hey, isn´t it great that we are studying the Human Genome in such depth?

Depends on your point-of-view. If you are eager for pure science over the next century, then yes, this has been money well spent. But if you deal in the trenches with people who are suffering or dying now from diseases and illnesses, then it is painful to watch all the money go into research that ´may´ help 100 years from now and not into research that could help 5 years from now.
