| They say that justice delayed is justice denied.If that is the case, then surely the families of Harvey Mad Man and Thomas Running Rabbit can rightly complain that there is no justice in Montana.The two men were murdered execution style in 1982 by Ronald Allen Smith, who during his trial confessed to the murder and said he had wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone.He also rejected a plea bargain for life in prison and insisted on the death penalty.[SNIP] Maybe we can learn from the case of Eddie Anderson.

Eddie Anderson, the killer from 1933, was convicted and sentenced within about a week of his crime. He was executed about a year later. The killer from 1982 is still sitting on Death Row. You do the math.

Obviously, the punishments that were standard at the time the Fathers wrote "no cruel or unusual punishment" were not cruel or unusual. We should return to those humane, standard punishments: public humiliation ( the stocks, the pillory), public flogging, and public hanging. Nobody could argue against that reasoning, could they?

This nothing new in Montana. One need only look at the case of Duncan Peter McKenzie and the murder of Lanna Harding. A corrupt layer from Glacier County made a career out of defending him and managed to bankrupt the county where the trial was held in the process.

A recent letter to the editor got me thinking about the origins of our great country, and how far astray we have gone from the principles enshrined in both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America.[SNIP]What was needed was an amendment which both stated plainly its intended goal — to strip the federal government of the power it has grabbed without authority over more than 200 years — and at the same time provided a clear mechanism for restoring America to the principles envisioned by the founders.

Some time ago, a reader presented me with a yellowed newspaper clipping from 1936, which seems to grow more relevant every day.It is a syndicated column by Frank R. Kent of the Baltimore Sun and was written just after the re-election of FDR.[SNIP]Kent’s column is a welcome reminder that the horror conservatives feel today at the willful blindness of their fellow citizens is nothing new.
