Two killers: Which received justice?
Daily Inter Lake [Kalispell MT], by Frank Miele

Original Article

They say that justice delayed is justice denied. If that is the case, then surely the families of Harvey Mad Man and Thomas Running Rabbit can rightly complain that there is no justice in Montana. The two men were murdered execution style in 1982 by Ronald Allen Smith, who during his trial confessed to the murder and said he had wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone. He also rejected a plea bargain for life in prison and insisted on the death penalty.[SNIP] Maybe we can learn from the case of Eddie Anderson.

Comments:
Eddie Anderson, the killer from 1933, was convicted and sentenced within about a week of his crime. He was executed about a year later. The killer from 1982 is still sitting on Death Row. You do the math.

Obviously, the punishments that were standard at the time the Fathers wrote "no cruel or unusual punishment" were not cruel or unusual. We should return to those humane, standard punishments: public humiliation ( the stocks, the pillory), public flogging, and public hanging. Nobody could argue against that reasoning, could they?

FTA: "Perhaps our society has lost its zeal for justice, or has forgotten that justice delayed is justice denied."

And whatever became of Major Nidal "Abduwali" Malik Hasan, United States Army, formerly of Fort Hood, Texas?

This nothing new in Montana. One need only look at the case of Duncan Peter McKenzie and the murder of Lanna Harding. A corrupt layer from Glacier County made a career out of defending him and managed to bankrupt the county where the trial was held in the process.

Killer salt and other ‘scientific’ disasters

Climate change is going to kill your grandkids? You might want to take that “science” with a grain of salt — literally. Some of you probably missed it, but the Centers for Disease Control announced earlier this month that consuming reasonable amounts of salt is not dangerous at all, despite decades of “science” claiming that salting up your steak and potatoes was tantamount to a death sentence.[SNIP] Which brings us back to global warming, also known as climate change. Every day there is some story about how horrible life on Earth is now

Happy birthday to me—if I have lived that long.[SNIP] I’m supposed to turn 58 today, which is not very significant for most people, but when I read so many obituaries for so many other people who didn’t make it to 58, I am definitely willing to get a little excited about good health, good cheer and good luck,as I rev up for the big push to 60.And as the world around me seems to be spinning out of control, I am also pondering the nature of good and evil and what responsibility I have in the few years left to me.

The so-called “comprehensive immigration reform bill” is just the latest turn of the screw in the ongoing campaign to fundamentally transform America into a socialist republic.Sadly, it may just be a matter of time before Congress surrenders its responsibility to protect our country and passes this bill, almost certainly resulting in a new America that will be less affluent, less secure, less educated and less relevant, but certainly more international in character. What’s funny — ha-ha funny in a sick humor kind of way, but also rather peculiar funny — is that our Congress doesn’t seem to give a damn

“Let me assure you that the trifling problem you brought us today is already put safely to bed... The memorandum itself is now being thoroughly and plausibly denied by its authors and blamed on an overzealous local bureaucracy somewhere in the barren Midwest.” If the government were running surveillance on itself rather than the AP, this quote could almost have been taken from a wiretap at IRS headquarters in Washington, D.C., just after word of the agency’s targeting of Tea Party conservatives hit the street. [SNIP]Actually, the quote is from Glenn Beck’s 2010 thriller, “The Overton Window”

Have the terrorists already won? Did the enormity of 9/11 somehow short-circuit our brains so that we now view smaller levels of political violence as somehow acceptable? Or are we being intentionally conditioned to excuse terrorism as a legitimate means of effecting social change? [SNIP] The evidence is overwhelming that, whether intentionally or not, Western society has become habituated to violence that in previous generations would have spurred not just outrage but immediate action.Call it the terrorist’s best friend —the ultimate reason why terrorism is effective in the first place— a sort of Stockholm syndrome response to violence.

“The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,/But in ourselves, that we are underlings.”—Shakespeare, “Julius Caesar” (Act I,Scene ii.)The ambiguity of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy about the end of the Roman republic and the onset of dictatorship teaches us that no matter how much we yearn for clarity, there is always an element of uncertainty in the fate of nations.Motive is subjective. Intention is debatable. Facts are elusive.[SNIP]But when you get right down to it, the fault for the nation’s general ignorance about the Benghazi coverup does not belong to the media;it belongs to ourselves.

I got an e-mail from Democratic lobbyist John Podesta last week that began “Dear Friend,” so I knew it had arrived at my inbox by accident. Podesta was the last chief of staff during the Bill Clinton presidency, and is currently the chair of the Center for American Progress, which as you can tell by the name is one of those groups trying to undermine our nation’s values and traditions under the guise of marching us into the 21st century’s version of “1984.” (Are we there yet?) One of the best levers the progressives have found to muscle us

On Friday, we were warned by Sen. Chuck Schumer not to “jump to conclusions” about “the events in Boston” or “to try to conflate those events” with the immigration reform bill hammered out by Schumer and the other seven senators who have appropriately identified themselves as gangsters. Schumer, a N.Y. Democrat, and the bipartisanly incorrect “Gang of Eight” unveiled their massive, 844-page immigration “reform” bill last week and hoped to rush it to a vote before anyone even knew what was in it.[SNIP] so let’s call it what it is: The Illegal Immigrant Legalization Bill.

Before the rise to power of the Nazis in Germany — which was arguably Europe’s most civilized country — there were approximately 9.5 million Jews living in Europe. As a result of Hitler’s genocidal policies, two out of three Jews were killed over the next 20 years. [SNIP]Which brings us to the carpet under which the contemporary world is sweeping the remains of murdered Christians, along with their living cousins — the falsely imprisoned, persecuted, and tortured — who survive for now among an increasingly hostile Muslim population in the Middle East and elsewhere.

When I was a kid, women were demanding “Equal Pay for Equal Work.” Somewhere along the way in the last 50 years, that has been conveniently truncated to “Equal Pay— Period.”At least, that SHOULD be the slogan — if truth in advertising laws could be applied to political posturing — because Equal Pay Day, which falls on Tuesday, April 9, is not about equal pay for equal work, but just about increasing women’s pay arbitrarily as a form of Marxist social engineering. The press release I got from the (George Soros-funded) National Partnership for Women & Families lamented

Last week, I somewhat audaciously proposed a “Restoration Amendment” to free the U.S. Constitution from decades of judicial precedent and neglect and return it as much as possible to the original intent of our nation’s founders. Many readers were grateful for the effort and pitched in with their own ideas for how the federal leviathan could be tamed, but many others were dismal and dismayed — certain that any honest effort to reform the nation was already a lost cause, and that the Constitution was already good enough if only people would follow it. Arizona Sen. John McCain was the Republican Party´s 2008 presidential nominee and he still wants the keys to the Oval Office. President Obama has been rolling up his sleeves campaigning across the country delivering a surreal stump speech message supposedly aimed at the middle class: big government works, Obamacare is manna from heaven, the wave of recent scandals are “phony” figments of the imagination, and all economic problems are the fault of the Republicans. Conveniently, he leaves out the bankruptcy of Detroit, a city run by his own party for more than half a century. His message is so stale and unconvincing, that even The New York Times and Washington Post have noticed. Both papers, usually loyal to Obama, remarked that

Alaska should be a top tier pick up opportunity for Senate Republicans next year…but their top choice of a candidate is Sarah Palin. 36% of GOP primary voters in the state say they’d like Palin to be their standard bearer against Mark Begich to 26% for Mead Treadwell, 15% for Dan Sullivan, and 12% for Joe Miller.

Embattled Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner and an attorney in the Federal Election Commission’s general counsel’s office appear to have twice colluded to influence the record before the FEC’s vote in the case of a conservative non-profit organization, according to e-mails unearthed by the House Ways and Means Committee and obtained exclusively by National Review Online. The correspondence suggests the discrimination of conservative groups extended beyond the IRS and into the FEC, where an attorney from the agency’s enforcement division in at least one case sought and received tax information about the status of a conservative group,

Sen. John McCain — a Democrat? There was confusion Wednesday after the Arizona Republican mistakenly strolled into President Obama’s meeting with Senate Democrats at the Capitol. The room full of Democrats — who happened to be meeting in the same room where the Senate GOP usually holds their weekly policy luncheons — erupted in applause and laughter as the former Republican presidential candidate made his entrance. As McCain, 76, walked out of the Dem-filled space, reporters pressed him as to why he stepped foot in the room.
