Bear Bombers Over Guam
Washington Free Beacon, by Bill Gertz

Two Russian nuclear-armed bombers circled the western Pacific island of Guam this week in the latest sign of Moscow’s growing strategic assertiveness toward the United States. The Russian Tu-95 Bear-H strategic bombers were equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and were followed by U.S. jets as they circumnavigated Guam on Feb. 12 local time—hours before President Barack Obama’s state of the union address. Air Force Capt. Kim Bender, a spokeswoman for the Pacific Air Force in Hawaii, confirmed the incident to the Washington Free Beacon and said

What a revolting administration, they have no fear of our country´s laws they couldn´t care less about the people of our country, but, they cower in the face of every other enemy of America, and the hands out Oliver Twist segment of our society fought to put him back in office. How repugnant is that?

The only reason the Russians dispatched the Bear bombers to fly around Guam is that they wanted to be noticed. Any time the Russians want to take out Guam, they could easily use submarine launched missiles from far away and the US bases on Guam would not know what hit them. The one big reason that the Russians won´t do that is the US strategic nuclear deterrent that Obama now wants to hollow out.

It’s a big weekend for the Bush family, which is enjoying a renaissance of sorts after several years in the political wilderness. Throngs of former administration officials, members of Congress and others descended Friday on College Station, Tex., to fete former president George H.W. Bush on the 25th anniversary of his arrival in office. One of the highlights of the weekend will be a live interview with his son, former Florida Gov. Oregon State University, disdaining responsibility for trashing distribution boxes that were intended for a politically conservative student newspaper, has still paid $1,000 plus $100,000 in legal fees after a former student, William Rogers, filed suit against them. The lawsuit, filed in 2009 by supporters of the newspaper The Liberty, contended that the university president and other school officials permitted the official campus newspaper access to distribution bins, but school officials removed the bins for The Liberty. The suit alleged that school officials confiscated distribution bins for The Liberty and tossed them onto a trash heap. The bins, which contained copies

When has a secretary of state been involved in so many disastrous, self-initiated negotiations? First, John Kerry convenes — against all advice and holding no cards — Geneva negotiations to resolve the Syria conflict and supposedly remove Bashar al-Assad from power. The talks collapse in acrimony and confusion. Kerry’s response? A second Geneva conference that — surprise! — breaks up in acrimony and confusion. Then, even as Russian special forces are taking over Crimea, Kerry goes chasing after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov — first to Paris, then Rome, then London — offering a diplomatic “offramp.” Lavrov shrugs him off.

The American left is outraged that the Supreme Court has voted 5 to 4 that limits to the aggregate amount of donations to federal campaigns have been found unconstitutional. Prior to the ruling, there was a 123,200 limit ($48,600 for candidates and $74,600 in contributions to PACs) on the total amount a single donor could contribute in a two year federal campaign cycle. The ruling did not affect the existing $2,600 limit on the maximum donation to any Congressional campaign. President Obama campaigned in Michigan with Dem Senate candidate Gary Peters, making the case for a hike in the federal minimum wage to $10.10. Unfortunately, the wrangling in the Senate today suggests the idea is going to die. Senator Susan Collins has said she’s trying to craft a bipartisan compromise on the minimum wage that could win Republican support — a compromise that would require hiking the minimum wage to an unspecified point below the $10.10 per hour that Obama and Democrats want. Today Harry Reid ruled out the idea, insisting that Dems won’t agree to anything below $10.10. In

THE SUPREME Court on Wednesday overturned yet another federal law meant to check corruption and influence-peddling in national politics. The ruling shows two things: The Roberts Court’s destructive view on these matters wasn’t changed by the backlash to its Citizens United holding, and Congress must respond by designing new rules that can pass the court’s overly skeptical review. If lawmakers tackle the issue forthrightly, they have some workable options. The court eliminated an overall limit on how much donors could give to candidates, parties and various other committees over the course of an election cycle. The idea had been to
