The Army is willfully giving him a bigger platform by threatening this. They will eventually back down (they want education to be free for all), but the Army, under the Obama regime, will have made huge progress in their fight bringing attention to how many in the military still (wrongfully for public service in their opinion) uphold Christian values. They´d much rather see the Army full of godless, souless, valueless, politically correct Obots. Raising public awareness using this boy as a tool will then allow them to shut down the free speech rights of those in the military.

I recall back in the early 70s, a few about-to-become officers suddenly decided their conscience wouldn´t allow them to fight an "unjust" war. Conveniently, this revelation came about just prior to graduation.

For some reason I kept reading his name as "Blank" Page, which is really more appropriate, given his lack of religious conviction.

I guess young (24 years old and still in West Point???) Blank learned a valuable lesson in litigious America... always get it in writing.

Why does he get out of the contract that everyone else signed and are forced to live up to? Put him in the Army as a private. That is the agreement he signed. Send his butt to Afghanistan.

I went through ROTC and we were told if we dropped out we´d do 4 years as an enlisted because of the contract we signed. Well he´s in the same boat. Stick it to him.

Ross Perot was only slightly slicker about getting the taxpayer-funded education before bailing out. He served barely 15 months of the required four years, then asked for an early discharge because his tender ears were flamed by the rough language on board ship. Disgusting man!

My son is a cadet and had a trip planned to Israel and Jordan for spring break. Fully funded by an alumni foundation. The Commandant cancelled all overseas trips, because it wouldn´t look good to have our best and brightest traveling overseas in the current era of austerity. The foundation lost all the deposits and airfare. But trust me, those kids at West Point are solid. The weirdo´s are just looking for a way out because they can´t measure up.

The Army said you would not have to pay. Well Blake, they made a commitment and will now not live up to it. Kinda like you did.

Cadet Page´s scheme brings to mind the draft dodgers during the Korean War who suddenly decided that becoming "conscientious objectors" and joining the Jehovah´s Witnesses was a "cool way" of avoiding the foxholes along the 38th Parallel.

A cadet who dropped out of a Service Academy; if for any reason other than a medicalreason, still had an obligation to complete (as an enlisted man. A period of service in their particular branch. Maybe, they have voided that policy in favor of making the miscreant pay the value of the education(and time?) delivered to the individual?

Hey #16 - my son´s in the class of 2015 - where are y´all from? You are correct - these kids are solid: conservative and religious & take ´honor, duty, country´ very seriously. I just love to introduce groups of them to friends - they are inspiring compared to other university students.

And yes #12, they tend to be a bit older than the average graduate - 24-25 is not uncommon at West Point - I´ve met many who started academic careers elsewhere and switched. This extra level of maturity truly serves West Point well.

Meanwhile, this weekend, we are packing goody boxes for our cadets at our monthly parents´ meeting: these kids no longer get desserts at West Point. Hamburgers, 2 our of 3 times are going to be turkey burgers. (We invite cadets to join us at restaurants for steak dinners whenever we get up to NY) You can have seconds on side dishes but rarely on the main dishes. My kid´s in crew so we send him Powerbars regularly to keep him from starving & he´s taken to buying an extra meal at Grant Hall almost daily. And yes, extra curricular stuff is getting cut every which way - it´s disheartening.

I hope this WP cadet in the article is forced to pay up either by service or $.

We live in the Gelded Age. Why isn´t this ex-cadet an enlisted man? Except for medical exemption, enlistment is the rule, if one goes past their second year at a service academy. He owes this to the taxpayers and we should insist he honor the obligations he agreed to.

My son is a Sophmore at West Point. As a Junior he will have the opportunity to Affirm his commitment and finish his degree. He can quit up till then and owe nothing.

It takes exceptional people to win an appointment to West Point, because our country expects the best of those who will lead in battle. That´s why Obama would never have gotten in.
