Diming us to death

During the State of the Union address, as well as many other speeches he´s given over the past four years, this President emphatically continues to state that his programs - his investments in America - "should not add one single dime to the deficit". Through tears, I watched the SOTU speech and when I heard this statement repeated once again, I was reminded of the scene in the movie Blazing Saddles during which, a posse was riding out after their man. Coming upon a makeshift toll bridge, the posse stops. The sheriff then yells out

Correction. It wasn´t the sheriff, it was Mr. Taggert(Slim Pickens). His next line was the kicker, "What will that a**hole think of next?"

The 124 states of America

Secessionist movements are all the rage these days. A handful of counties in Colorado tried to secede from the rest of the state earlier this year. There´s an attempt to create the State of Jefferson (northern California/southern Oregon) via ballot initiative in 2014. And there´s plenty more. What would the U.S. look like if all of the secession movements in U.S. history had succeeded? Well, Mansfield University geography professor Andrew Shears built a map to answer that question. (It covers secession movements through the end of 2011.) His 124 states of America is below. Click the map

SHANGHAI— A wealthy Chinese businessman and philanthropist known for his zany public stunts said Tuesday that he is leading a group of investors seeking to acquire a large or controlling stake in The New York Times Company. Shares in the Times Company jumped 4 percent to a five-year high Monday, shortly after the businessman, Chen Guangbiao, hinted at his plans in a speech in southern China. The publisher of The New York Times said earlier this year that the family that controls the paper is not interested in selling it. In a telephone interview Tuesday, Mr. Chen said he had

Sydney- Sydney kicked off New Year celebrations with a dazzling fireworks display, the first in a wave of pyrotechnics to usher in 2014 from Hong Kong to world record-chasing Dubai. Seven tonnes of explosives lit up Australia´s biggest city, with fireworks shooting off the Opera House for the first time in more than 10 years as part of the December 31 extravaganza, focused on the Harbour Bridge. "They were absolutely fantastic," said Murphy Robertson, from Denver in the United States, after watching the Aus$6 million ($5.4 million) show which attracted some 1.5 million people to harbour vantage points. As President Obama pivots to the issue of income inequality, Harvard has already advanced fairly far in eliminating grade inequality. At a faculty meeting earlier this month, Harvard government professor Harvey Mansfield elicited an admission from the dean of undergraduate education that the most common grade at Harvard now is an “A” (the term “Harvard fail” refers these days to a grade somewhere in the “B” range). Last week, Harvard Magazine posted a sophisticated defense of the college’s grading system by Michael Zuckerman, a recent graduate whose remarkable commencement address in 2010 was a reflection on adversity and failure.

The Obama administration sent three ethnic Uighur Muslim captives from Guantánamo to Slovakia, the Defense Department said Tuesday, ending one of the saddest and longest-running chapters of unlawful detention at the U.S. prison camps in Cuba. Yusef Abbas, 38, Hajiakbar Abdulghuper, 39, and Saidullah Khalik, 36, left the remote U.S. Navy base in a secret operation on Monday, according to U.S. government sources. They had spent about a dozen years in U.S. military custody. Their transfer reduced the prison camp population to 155 captives, 11 fewer than when the year started. It was the government’s latest incremental step toward reaching

Many residents evacuated a southeastern North Dakota town overnight after a train carrying crude oil derailed and exploded, and officials warned that acrid and hazardous smoke could blow into the area. No one was hurt in Monday´s derailment of the mile-long train that sent flames and great plumes of black smoke skyward about a mile from the small town of Casselton. The National Transportation Safety Board was preparing to investigate but the fire was such as darkness fell that investigators couldn´t even get close enough to count the number of burning cars. Some burned through the night. The Cass County

Since professors of all sorts have been paid consultants to organizations of all sorts, it is questionable why this was a story at all, much less one that covered an entire inside page, in addition to a central front-page opening, under the headline "Academics Who Defend Wall St. Reap

Senate Republicans still smarting from a Democratic rules change that diminished their power to block President Obama´s appointees are vowing retribution against the majority when lawmakers return to work in January. The GOP in the final weeks of the 2013 session provided a glimpse into what that might mean in 2014. Unable to block most presidential nominees because of the Democratic rule change, Republicans are using their remaining authority to slow the Senate to a crawl, delaying action on routine matters that typically pass uncontested. Senate Democrats changed the rules to limit Republicans´ use of the filibuster to block most

In the second half of the 2000s liberals did a fine job of blaming Bush for everything that went wrong in the US. His "neo-con" supporters, they asserted, were just as bad. Now that President Obama and his signature legislation are a twin disaster the same opportunity beckons for conservatives. It´s not just Obama, it´s the whole liberal project that created this mess. So the road to 2016 involves discrediting Obama, but also the whole liberal ruling class. A good place to start would be FDR´s Four Freedoms, for when the campaign to elect the un-Obama kicks off in 2016

Americans named President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as the world´s most admired living man and woman in 2013, according to a Gallup poll released on Monday. Obama topped the annual list for the sixth consecutive year, a typical ranking for a sitting U.S. president, the polling organization said. But the percentage of those surveyed who choose him as the most admired man fell to 16 percent this year, down from 30 percent in 2012. The president´s job approval rating has dropped during a year marked by a botched healthcare rollout and stalled legislative initiatives at the start of

A new Gallup poll finds President Obama’s approval rating at 39 percent and his disapproval rating at 54 percent. It was the 2013 Politifact "Lie of the Year," our president´s now infamous line: "If you like your health care plan, you can keep it." Now all Americans are realizing what Catholics have known from the beginning: President Barack Obama is a master of deception. Lest people forget, passage of the Affordable Care Act happened in part because Obama struck a deal with a single Catholic holdout: Bart Stupak, D-Michigan. Stupak agreed to vote for the bill in exchange for an executive order protecting conscience rights and preserving the Hyde Amendment´s ban on the use of federal funds for abortion.
