We have multiple cultures represented in my son´s 2nd grade class and they were all so excited this morning about giving out their valentines to their classmates.

Adults can be so stupid.

If you read between the lines, it is because Valentine´s Day celebrations are banned in most islamic countries, notably Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Syria.

Why not ban other cultures instead. People who come here, many illegally, not only get benefits they shouldn´t be entitled to but also get our traditions trashed.

Adults get "upset" and the kids don´t even know what you are talking about. "Left out"? No one would be left out. They act like they would be herded into the gym and turn the lights out. All students would be having a party. They would get cards and goodies and probably make a small craft. Valentine´s Day is the perfect holiday to chase the mid winter blues away for a while. I have on a candy red sweater and a striped red and pink top. We gave candy to our student helpers and I have had many students tell me Happy VaLentine´s Day. Many of those students were Burmese and two were from India. They were not feeling left out. I can´t wait until St. Patrick´s Day to see what the nut jobs come up with for that holiday.

Is there anything that happens in the liberal heaven of Taxachusetts that isn´t ridiculously stupid?

Would someone who lives in this area please report what happens at this school on May 5th.

Times certainly have changes.

In 1968 I was in forth grade. Everyone brought in treats for the last class before Christmas. That would be the day after the night time school Christmas presentations for the parents, which included songs about baby Jesus.

For Valentines day we brought valentines for who we LIKED. I usually gave one to every person, unless they were a real jerk. Some kids would put a chocolate in with theirs, which was really nice to get.

Twice a year, Mrs. Carl, a wonderful fourth grade teacher, would have a picnic IN HER BACKYARD, about two blocks from the school. We all loved going to her shady tree back yard and having a picnic, which she and a class aid worked hard to put on. Then we went back to school.

No one got sick. No one had issues. It was a nice group thing that she put together to show that she loved her kids. She paid for it all out of pocket.

Hardly anything above is allowed now, but it sure made for nice memories, and the kids when back to school charged up and ready for more learning.

But never mind. The only thing schools seem to tolerate now is the intolerant.

A culture that abandons its own traditions and practices lest newcomers from other cultures feel left out is committing a form of cultural suicide. This is taking hospitality and sensitivity to a self-destructive extreme. It is a manifestation of cultural decline.

Kids need the training and exposure regarding assaults and grabbing stuff

It seems to me that "multiculturalism" would dictate this should be an opportunity to teach about this custom in the United States (and many other countries as well). But as usual, it´s only "our" culture that is offensive.

I am remembering the ´dark´ planet (but I can´t remember its name) in A Wrinkle In Time, where all the children were playing in the driveways of their all alike houses, bouncing balls or skipping rope, all on the same beat. And the mothers opened the doors of the houses all at the same time and the children all ran into their houses and the doors closed at the same time. All except one. Like No. 8, I remember the grade school Valentine´s party & usually our "room mother" would bring homemade cupcakes or cookies. I think all of the moms & teachers were in agreement that each kid had to give a Valentine to everyone so that nobody was left out of the fun. Later on, my Dad told me a funny story why this was so - it seems that he was such a holy terror in school, that the only Valentine he got was from the teacher! I hate how PC is ruining even these simple, little pleasures for the kids!

Just so you have the background on Malden. Two of the Trade Center planes were flown by terrorists living in Malden. They frequented Gold´s Gym there. The day the towers came down children were dancing in the classroom aisles in my teacher friend´s classroom. They told her they knew about it prior. I bet they gave out candy to their neighbors then as is their custom. Shame on Malden. They have bowed to terrorists and their kids will reap what the school system has sown. My friend retired soon after and teaches out in the sticks now when she feels like it. PC will bring down this country.

Me too, am with #6. The problem is passive weenie-minded parents who are teaching their kids to be the same. If you ARE going to insist on putting your children in these government indoctrination camps, at least unite as parents! Fight. What would the administration do if 80% of the kids just did Valentines ANYWAY? Suspend all those kids? I think not.

Oh, how we loved Valentines Day giving of our little cards. We made sure that each and every one of our classmates got one from each of us. It was so wonderful to see those hand scrawled signatures. This is so sad.

If kids are being purposely or cruelly left out I COULD see making this decision. However there is no evidence that this is happening. The PC police strike again.

I´ve been an Ldotter for a long time, so I hate to contradict, but Valentine´s day is based upon ancient PAGAN rituals that promote atheism and sexual promiscuity.
My children are not allowed to participate in this event. We spend this in prayer and quiet contemplation.

Why let non-believers dictate what days the Church decides to celebrate. If that is the case there can be no celebrations since every day of the week and month of the year is named after a pagan deity or reference.

#28, that is ghastly (about the students dancing in the aisles on 9-11), but it also happened in some communities in New York and New Jersey, too, so I believe it.

A local school district here doesn´t allow the kids to celebrate ST. Valentine´s Day, because it is a religious holiday. Our school district´s calendar is so devoid of holiday references as to be useless for use as a general calendar.

#12: We really DON´T get what we pay for in the public schools. I pay nearly $7K in property tax annually and the lion´s share goes to the public schools. I don´t have kids, but I have a stake in the future and therefore support quality education. We are paying top dollar for kids to be indoctrinated with leftist crap. Home schooling parents are paying double for their kids´ education. Once at home and once in their tax bill.

In the weeks after 9/11 there were numerous stories floating around the Internet of school children dancing in the aisles and proclaiming they knew all about the attack before it happened. If this had actually occurred in Malden, I´d have known about it. Think for a minute. If thousand of little kids, nationwide, knew about the attacks, beforehand, do you think they were all capable of keeping such a secret?

The Valentine´s Day holiday was propagated for the sole purpose of generating sales for florists, card and candy makers, restaurants and jewelers. That goes for Sweetest Day also. Commercial holidays, nothing more.

Valentines Day can be fun for kids - trading Valentines cards, cupcakes, little candies, etc...
I think that what terrifies liberals. They want to load them down with all the worries of the world and then offer-up government as the savior.

#39, somebody has been giving you bad information. Saint Valentine is a widely recognized third century Roman saint commemorated on February 14. Also, pagans do not promote atheism. They believe in gods--not "without god". Additionally, Satan is a Christian symbol--not pagan, not Jewish, not Hindu, not any other religion. Pagans do not believe in Satan or "satanic rituals". Finally, not all pagan religions believe in sexual promiscuity. There are many different pagan beliefs. Some are very close to Christianity.
