White House opposes House

Washington Times, by Dave Boyer

The White House said Wednesday night it opposes a bill by House Republicans to extend a pay freeze for federal civilian employees through the end of this year. President Obama, who proposed on Tuesday an increase in the federal minimum wage to $9 per hour, signed an executive order in December that would lift the pay freeze beginning on March 27 unless Congress acts before then. The president proposed the “unprecedented” civilian pay freeze in 2010 to “put the nation on a sustainable fiscal path,” the White House Office of Management and Budget said. OMB said

Now is the perfect time for the House to enact a bill REDUCING the pay of all federal employees, armed services excepted, by 10 percent. Executive, judicial and legislative branches, without exception. To occur immediately!

Good idea, #1. The Emperor would veto it, of course. More doable is to block any more continuing resolutions. No budget? No funds.

Before the pay freeze in 2010, he gave federal employees a raise in 2009.

Why not just eliminate some of the useless agencies and save real money ? We could eliminate Zippy and never notice.

I like the 10-20-30 plan. Cut all federal employee pay by 10%, cut number of federal employees by 20% and cut retirements and other non-pay benefits by 30%. You can change around the catagories, but 10-20-30%, start at the top, on down to janitors.

I´ve believed that all government should be cut accross the board, salaries, departments...pick a percentage and just do it. In the aftermath, government expenditures should not increase until the deficit is eliminated. How is that?

President Obama revived his internal White House political operation Friday in preparation for the 2014 mid-term elections, naming longtime aide David Simas as director of political strategy and outreach. Mr. Simas, who played a key role in the president’s reelection campaign, served much of last year in the West Wing coordinating the administration’s message on Obamacare. He will become the president’s point person for working with Democrats on the midterms, which Mr. Obama has called crucial to implementing his agenda over his final two years in office. In 2009-1010, Mr. Simas served as White House political director. Prior to joining

Google’s Gmail users across the United States, Canada and Europe were impacted when their feee email service went down for about an hour Friday afternoon. The service resumed shortly after 3 p.m. Earlier, Google released a statement: “We’re investigating reports of an issue with Gmail. We will provide more information shortly.” The email service outage prompted the Twitter hashtag #gmail to start trending almost immediately. “For everyone worrying about the #Gmail outage, rest assured that your messages are safely being restored by the NSA,” joked Twitter user Ian Gertler.

Public opinion on same-sex marriage has shifted so dramatically in recent years that Democratic groups now see the issue as a critical way to mobilize voters in a slew of races up and down the ballot. Just a decade ago, widespread opposition to gay marriage did just the opposite, allowing Karl Rove to mobilize conservatives in 13 states and help reelect George W. Bush as president. The changing political dynamics were on full display this week as Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring (D) announced he would not defend the state’s ban on same-sex marriage on the grounds that it was unconstitutional. Herring won a close election

Stop me if you’ve heard this before. A conservative group applies for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with the IRS in full compliance of the law, but gets jerked around for a couple of years in a process that should just take a few months. The IRS tax-exempt unit then starts demanding private information that isn’t germane to the application, but which worries members about just why the IRS would want this kind of information about opponents to the current administration. According to the Obama administration, this is old news from 2010-12, and the targeting of political opponents by the IRS stopped

Fixated as we Americans are on Canada’s three most attention-getting exports — polar vortexes, Alberta clippers and the antics of Toronto’s addled mayor — we’ve somewhat overlooked a major feature of Canada’s current relations with the United States: extreme annoyance. Last week, speaking to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Canada’s foreign minister calmly but pointedly complained that the United States owes Canada a response on the Keystone XL pipeline. “We can’t continue in this state of limbo,” he sort of complained, in what for a placid, imperturbable Canadian passes for an explosion of volcanic rage. Add this to the litany of scary but improbable things people are hearing could happen because of the new federal health-care law: After you die, the state could come after your house. The concern arises from a long-standing but little-known aspect of Medicaid, the state-federal program that provides health coverage to millions of low-income Americans. In certain cases, a state can recoup its medical costs by putting a claim on a deceased person’s assets. This is not an issue for people buying private coverage on online marketplaces. And experts say it is unlikely that the millions of people in more

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell stormed the national stage in 2009 as symbols of the GOP’s anti-Obama momentum, but with both now under federal investigation, Republicans’ unity is shattered and strategists and fellow officeholders struggle to contain the damage. Mr. McDonnell was indicted Tuesday, while Mr. Christie is facing a state investigation over “Bridgegate” and a federal probe over New Jersey’s use of Superstorm Sandy emergency response money — money that the governor badgered Congress to give him. Each were political stars and were reportedly on the short list to be the 2012 vice

To make its case, the government must show beyond a reasonable doubt that McDonnell (with wife Maureen as co-conspirator) struck a corrupt bargain with a Richmond businessman who lavished $165,000 in cash and gifts on the McDonnell family. They must deliver evidence that the former governor agreed to provide his official help to Star Scientific chief executive Jonnie R. Williams in exchange for his

But a report released Monday by a panel of international jurists ought to * some consciences. Based on 55,000 images smuggled out of the country, mostly by a defector from the military police, it reports the murder of some 11,000 men detained by the Syrian government between 2011 and last August. Many of the bodies in the photographs show signs of torture; some are missing eyes. More

In politics, lying is the new sex. Even the lesser sin, exaggeration, is grounds for questions about your suitability to run for office. Americans may be becoming more like the French in tolerating peccadilloes (just ask Rep. Mark Sanford of South Carolina or Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana about surviving a sex scandal), but get a detail wrong about whether you divorced at 21 or at 19, and woe unto you. That’s what happened to Wendy Davis over the weekend. You may know her as the Texas state senator in pink sneakers who delivered an 11-hour filibuster against abortion restrictions in June.

Politics: The Obama administration has turned the executive branch loose on its enemies — part of a disturbing and unprecedented trend toward delegitimizing political differences and marginalizing conservatives.
