Affenpinscher wins Best in
Show at Westminster dog show

NEW YORK – When Joe the Affenpinscher won the 137th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Tuesday night, his handler Ernesto Lara raised him high towards the rafters as if to say, "We did it!" The uncommon dog with a familiar name proved that he was no regular Joe by becoming the first of his breed to win Best in Show at Madison Square Garden. The 9-year-old Affenpinscher´s full name is Banana Joe V Tani Kazari, but his handlers just call him Joe. The Affenpinscher is known for its monkey-like face but human-like qualities. Comments:
Far more fun than watching the SOTU. The sheepdog that went reserve was also outstanding.

That was a really good BIS grouping to choose from. Congrats to Banana Joe and Swagger! And yes, the show was way more educational and made more sense than wasting another couple of hours of my life watching the SOTU.

Loved the little Affenpinscher and the Bichon. The terrier judge was lazy and the worst I´ve ever seen at Westminster.

I agree this was much better than watching the SOTU.

I loved the American Foxhound and the German Wirehair Pointer. But all of the dogs were special in their own way. Having watched the Westminster Dog Show for three years now, I am partial to the herding and working dog groups, as well as the sporting group. I learn so much, and there are always new breeds I´ve never heard of. I´m fascinated with the history of each breed and their unique purposes.

That was a good show, Far more interesting and tolerable than watching SOTU.

All jokes aside, I really really thought the Portuguese water dog would win, just to be pc and all. There were certainly many new breeds seen. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the event. Nothing says loving like a dog.

I agree the Affenpinscher was adorable, but I´m partial to Bichons. We are now down to one. Our beloved little 12 yr old had to be put down in Sept. because of an anurysim. His cousin, Lady Madeline is 13. We ALL grieved.

Anyway, watching the dog show was sooo much better than listening to another lecture from the One.

Absolutely loved the sheepdog! What a glorious representative of the breed! I loved them all. I tend to agree with y´all on the Terrier Group judge.

I also watched it...I would have watched it even if Mitt was giving the SOTU speech(well I could have seen it on the internet!!) Loved all of it...One of my Maltese came in second Best of Breed in 2005..so proud of her..and she was immediately retired so she could come home....

Loved this alternate dog show. It had so much more class. So many cute pooches but Swagger (what a perfect name) was my favorite.

My daughter and I had fun playing fashion police critiquing the ´couture´ of the women handlers. Where, oh where, do they get their duds and shoes? From suits not even carried by Goodwill anymore to MOB dresses from the fifties to shoes I´ve never seen in any era? They seem to be parodying the parody "Best in Show."

But love the show and never miss it.

The Affenpinscher is cute. Not very common - I´ve seen one a couple times. I like when an old hound dog wins. Does that happen anymore? Maybe next year.

Ahhhhhhh the good life. As lovingly recorded by the New York Times. Here´s the Lord of His Manor…. "A baseball cap perched on his head, his eyes sheathed in sunglasses" as he "sipped a Diet Coke and gazed across Lake Tahoe to California… in this most calming of places -- the glassine lake ringed by snow-dusted mountains, the late-morning quiet.… riding around the lake in his S.U.V., wandering a pristine beach, puttering around his office, and enjoying a long wine-soaked dinner as the sun set over the lake." And when this gentleman of leisure is at hard at work?

Much of the conservative world seems shocked that the RNC is constrained from doing anything about voter fraud. The left wing blogosphere is laughing at everyone who didn’t know this already. To me, it’s old old news – sort of like the abolition of poll taxes. In fact, the abolition of poll taxes in 1964 is closer in time to the consent decree that the RNC entered with the DNC in 1982 than we are today distant from that same 1982 consent decree. Simply, under the terms of the order, the RNC cannot engage in ballot

I’m writing this in the morning of the 3rd, well before the debates. There are several things I can tell you about the debate though: Unless Barack Obama actually falls asleep while speaking, or eats a live puppy on stage (and even then, I’m not sure), the media will declare him the best, most presidential president ever, the brightest man in the room and the most informed economist of our times. Mitt Romney, meanwhile, will be uninformed, lying, plutocratic, uncaring, and – oh, of course – RACIIIIIIIIST. G-d forbid that Mitt says anything of substance, because it will be declared

The government employees union AFSCME is running an ad featuring a member who says he collects Mitt Romney's garbage. The worker, a black man, claims Romney doesn't care about "invisible people" like him and the services they provide. See for yourself: Maybe AFSCME should have also consulted with some of their members who are public librarians before they produced the ad. If they had, they might have learned that in his 2010 book No Apology; The Case for American Greatness Mitt Romney specifically wrote about garbage collectors, including a line about them being invisible to the suits:

In 2011, the journalist Mara Hvistendahl published Unnatural Selection: Choosing Boys Over Girls, and the Consequences of a World Full of Men, detailing the societal effects of sex-selective abortions that target women the world over and resulted in the absence of perhaps more than 100 million girls who by now should have been born. But Hvistendahl soon learned the downside to uncovering what many believe to be a shocking trend in human rights offenses: people will want to do something about it. And so she lashed out, declaring that “anti-abortion activists

Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

Remember little Anthony Freemont, played by cute little Billy Mumy, in one of the "Twilight Zone´s" most famous episodes? In the opening sequence Rod Serling informs us: "A monster had arrived in the village. Just by using his mind, he took away the automobiles, the electricity, the machines -- because they displeased him -- and he moved an entire community back into the dark ages -- just by using his mind. . . . and the people there have to smile. They have to think happy thoughts and say happy things because once displeased, the monster can wish them into a cornfield

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), one of the architects of the Affordable Care Act, said on Tuesday that the healthcare law, set to go into full effect in less than eight months, is “probably the most complex piece of legislation ever passed by the United States Congress” and “is just beyond comprehension.” Rockefeller said he is concerned that early missteps with implementing the healthcare overhaul may cascade into confusion and chaos. The law, said Rockefeller, is “so complicated and if it isn’t done right the first time, it will just simply get worse.” Rockefeller’s consternation echoes comments made earlier this

In Philadelphia, at a human abattoir on Lancaster Avenue, is where it ends, not where it starts. It starts with the perversion of language. It starts when the icons of a dissipated culture reduce a baby to a “fetus.” From there, Yeats’s blood-dimmed tide rolls rapidly in. Before long, a baby is not a person but a punishment, as President Barack Obama framed the matter in his familiar off-the-cuff iciness. Of course, to describe newborn children in their boundless possibilities and wonder would be to acknowledge, foremost, their humanity. That is why, instead, abortion enthusiasts must grope for words

They say they were just doing what the boss trained them to do. But eight former employees of a run-down West Philadelphia abortion clinic now face prison time for the work they did for Dr. Kermit Gosnell. Three have pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. And Gosnell, 72, is on trial in the deaths of a patient and seven babies allegedly born alive. In testimony at the capital murder trial this past month, an unlicensed doctor and untrained aides described long, chaotic days at the clinic. They said they performed grueling, often gruesome work for little more than minimum wage,

On Thursday, in the midst of ongoing national debate over prospective gun control and comprehensive immigration legislation, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said that he didn’t need the approval of a majority of his own party to move forward with legislation. Referring to the so-called Hastert Rule, named after former House Speaker Denny Hastert (R-IL), which dictated that House leadership not bring up any bill for a vote without the support of a majority of the majority party, Boehner said, “Listen: It was never a rule to begin with.” Then, realizing the gravity of admitting

LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends. Winters was a pioneer of improvisational standup comedy, with an exceptional gift for mimicry, a grab bag of eccentric personalities and a bottomless reservoir of creative energy.

I’ve been writing about media coverage of abortion for many years. And so have many others. If you haven’t read David Shaw’s “Abortion Bias Seeps Into The News,” published in the Los Angeles Times back in 1990, you should. That report also explains why we cover the topic here at GetReligion. But the thing is that I’m getting kind of sick of pointing out egregious bias only to see things not just remain bad but get worse. Just think, in the last year, we saw the media drop any pretense of objectivity and bully the Susan G. Komen Foundation

HOLLYWOOD — Republican leaders plotted their party’s political comeback on Thursday with plans to court minority voters and modernize their political operations. But some wondered if one person could make it all for naught: Hillary Clinton. As attendees of the Republican National Committee’s spring meeting debated party rules and a refurbished GOP brand capable of winning back the White House, more than two dozen operatives and officials expressed worry that none of their party’s potential 2016 candidates can take her down. WASHINGTON — The White House says the mother of a Newtown shooting victim will deliver the weekly presidential radio and Internet address. President Barack Obama typically gives the talk, focusing on a topic that´s in the news or a policy the White House is pushing. This week, Obama has asked Francine Wheeler to deliver the address instead. Wheeler and her husband, David, lost their 6-year-old son Ben in the December schoolhouse shooting in Newtown, Conn. White House spokesman Jay Carney says Obama believes the voices of Newtown families have been critical to progress on gun control.

During an appearance on MSNBC´s Morning Joe, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said expanded background checks are "not enough," and private gun sales cannot continue because they allow terrorists to buy guns in the United States. "Can a terrorist currently buy a gun in this country? Yes. Can a felon? Yes. You go to a gun show and virtually no questions are asked," Feinstein claimed. Joe Scarborough chimed in later in the segment to echo Feinstein´s claim, asserting, "So now we have al Qaeda terrorists saying, ´Kill Americans, it´s easy, just go to gun shows, get an assault weapon.´"
