US wrestlers blindsided by Olympic ouster

| Rulon Gardner´s epic upset of Russian wrestling great Alexander Karelin in 2000 remains one of the most compelling moments of the modern Olympics. Starting in 2020, youngsters looking to Gardner and Karelin for inspiration won´t have a chance to excel on the sport´s biggest stage. Gardner and nearly everyone else associated with the sport in the U.S. were jolted Tuesday when International Olympic Committee leaders dropped wrestling from the Summer Games. The move is set to take effect for the 2020 Olympics and eliminates a sport that´s been a staple of both the ancient and modern games.

Comments: Unbelievable. Wrestling was a staple of the Olympic games. They dropped it like a cold potato.

This is so wrong. I think the Olympics should be dropped. The committee is unbelievably corrupt. There are other opportunities for worldwide competition that don´t feed that criminal beast.

I just can´t beleive wrestling is out.
We are a wrestling family. My son wrestled, my daughters were wrestling managers, my oldest daughter married a man who was a wrestler in high school and her father in law was the high school wrestling coach. I´ve spent many hours knitting in the bleachers between matches, cheering on my son and his teammates and the wrestlers after him that my daughters maintained the stats for.
I am not really a sports fan, but wrestling is defintiely my favorite gig and I am just floored that this sport was deemed too whatever to not be Olympic competitive.
Yet competitive trampoline remains...

First they added the ´´dream team´´ so that a bunch of rich professional NBA basketball players could get gold medals at the Olympics.
Then they added tennis, so that that professional tennis players like Venus and Serena Willams could get gold medals at the Olympics (to go with theeir Wimbleton trophies).
Now they are adding golf. I guess Tiger Woods wants a gold medal at the Olympics now.

I remember as a high school wrestler and college wrestler dreaming of qualifying for the Olympic trials. I didn´t even care if I got to go to the Olympics. It would have been enough to just get invited to try out (This dream ended the day I wrestled a real Olympic contender. ).
We must admit that wrestling isn´t so great to watch unless you know the wrestlers involved. Then its awesome. But if its strangers...its...uh...meh. But I figure that the manliness of the sport killed it.

This makes as much sense as Obama winning the Nobel Peace prize. I was a diver in HS and absolutely think synchronized diving is the most contrived sport ever. Not that it does not take skill, but until the inclusion in the Olympics I had never even heard about it. Swimming has so many different events its crazy. We have ping pong, gold, tennis, rhythmic gymnastics, beach volleyball, but now they are going to take out one of the oldest events and one the original Olympics was based on. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

SAN FRANCISCO — California lawmakers are considering taking some tax exemptions away from youth groups that do not accept gay, transgender or atheist members — a move intended to pressure the Boy Scouts of America to lift its ban on gay Scouts and troop leaders. Some cities have withdrawn free rent and other subsidies from the Boy Scouts over the years, but legislation introduced by state Sen. Ricardo Lara would make California the first state to target the Scouts for its anti-gay policy. The Long Beach Democrat´s bill, SB 323, is scheduled for its first committee hearing on Wednesday.

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.

Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”
