The Venezuelan Train Crash
Investor´s Business Daily, by Editorial

Original Article

Posted By:PageTurner, 2/12/2013 12:57:47 PM

Economics: Venezuela has devalued its currency, joining Iran, Argentina and others whose wars on math brought the same result. Some call this a "restorative." It´s not. It´s what happens when big government hits a wall. Venezuela´s monster 47% devaluation from 4.3 to 6.3 bolivars to the dollar, reportedly ordered by President Hugo Chavez from his hospital bed in Cuba, marks the reckoning for his regime´s big-spending ways in Venezuela´s low-growth economy. It was about as predictable as a crash from a runaway train, given his mad-lunatic war on economics — his lethal combination of welfare spending, destruction of the private sector

Comments:
Hugo has had a collision with ... math. Sound like any place you know?

Correction. Should read "reportedly ordered by the late President Hugo Chavez from a hospital morgue in Cuba."

Hugo passed away weeks to months ago under CastroCare, the Spanish speaking version of ObamaCare. But in deference to Fidel, Hugo didn´t want his passing announced until after Cuba´s dictator passed through the gates of Hades. Fidel, Hugo and Raul Castro will then await the arrival of their mulatto brother, El Baracko, to complete the foursome.

A monster devaluation will come to America before 2020. The population will be impoverished by this action.

Jamaica´s Cannabis Commercial and Medicinal Research Taskforce (CCMRT) says it has been given an assurance that the country later this year will decriminalize marijuana as the island seeks to establish a medicinal marijuana industry. CCMRT leader, Dealana Seiveright in a statement, said that the assurance had come from Jamaican Science, Technology, Energy and Mining Minister Phillip Paulwell. The statement quoted Paulwell as telling members of the taskforce that “ganja will be decriminalized in Jamaica this year and emphasized that Jamaica cannot be allowed to be left behind on the issue”.

Chevron Gets Justice From

Shakedown: A federal judge has ruled that a $9.5 billion judgment against Chevron in Ecuador was won through fraud. It´s a victory for Chevron, but at a cost of millions. So why isn´t someone in this environmental predator racket in jail? After more than a decade of battling against charges it created a "rainforest Chernobyl" in an Ecuadorean village called Lago Agrio, it must have come as a relief to the oil giant to hear the words of truth ring out from the bench of a tough Manhattan judge, Lewis Kaplan. In a nearly 500-page ruling, he branded the entire case as

Some Americans may vaguely recall Mumia Abu-Jamal from the "Free Mumia" T-shirts and posters that once cluttered college campuses. Maureen Faulkner will forever remember him as the cold-blooded cop killer who left her a widow at age 24. Maureen has endured three decades of endless appeals and a dishonest, international campaign to turn her husband´s killer into a celebrated icon for the radical left. Now one of the lawyers who helped to promote that campaign, Debo Adegbile, has been nominated to lead the Justice Department´s Civil Rights Division. A vote on that nomination is scheduled this week in the Senate. This affront

Leadership: Marco Rubio lit the Senate on fire Wednesday with a powerful statement about Cuba´s stranglehold on Venezuela. He didn´t need to dig deep to prove it: His evidence was as abundant as Cuba´s shortages. With much of the foreign policy establishment either silent or focused elsewhere, and useful idiots in the Venezuelan regime spewing mendacious talking points in the media, it´s easy for truth to get lost in the maelstrom submerging Venezuela, a nation just 1,200 miles from Key West. But every now and then a leader emerges from such a mess, and Sen. Rubio stood out with what

At the southernmost point of Central Park, on a small strip of sidewalk abutting 59th Street, hundreds of Venezuelans swarmed a statue of Simon Bolivar, the Caracas-born liberator of South America and a figure now most commonly associated with the bolivarian revolution of Hugo Chavez and his rechristened Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. But it’s an association that when mentioned in this crowd produces furrowed brows and narrowed eyes, quickly followed by a rapid-fire recapitulation of Chavez’s many crimes. The necessary symbolism of the meeting point trumped practicality: the crowd quickly swelled, spreading like an inkblot from the small patch surrounding Bolivar

Bureaucracy: The FCC jumped the shark with its outrageous plan to police America´s newsrooms. This grasp for a new mission signals an agency that has outlived its purpose. We have a better idea: Just scrap the FCC. There´s nothing worse than a federal agency that has lost its original mission, has nothing productive to do and, as a result, is restlessly rustling around for something to justify its existence. That describes the Federal Communications Commission, an old-line agency founded in the 1930s to regulate a limited supply of television airwaves divided among three networks, which is now gone with the wind. Twenty years on, Nafta is one of the most powerful and revolutionary success stories in the history of trade. A proposed government study of how media organizations gather news has incited a powerful backlash, particularly among conservatives, who said that it could be part of an official effort to intimidate or second-guess journalists. Faced with an outcry, the Federal Communications Commission’s chairman said Thursday that he would amend the effort — intended to assess whether the news media were meeting the public’s “critical information needs” — by removing questions that critics had deemed invasive. The FCC last year proposed an analysis of news content from newspapers, Web sites and radio and TV stations. The agency said it wanted to assess

During his speech to the CPAC crowd on Thursday, Sen. Via Matt Lewis, here’s Maverick once again demonstrating that “cordial relationship” in politico-speak means “two people who can’t publicly admit to hating each other but obviously do.” And it’s a cheap shot. Cruz’s point yesterday at CPAC was that Dole, McCain, and Romney lost because they weren’t conservative enough. That’s not because they’re gutless — he said specifically that they were “good” and “decent” men — but because they’re not committed, full-throated ideologues, even less so when they’re fighting for purple states in a national election. We can debate whether that’s true but there’s nothing offensive in raising the subject.

What’s been said of confession — that it is good for one’s soul but bad for one’s reputation — can also be true of testifying to Congress, so Lois Lerner has chosen to stay silent. Hers, however, is an eloquent silence. The most intrusive and potentially most punitive federal agency has been politicized; the IRS has become an appendage of Barack Obama’s party. Furthermore, congruent with exhortations from some congressional Democrats, it is intensifying its efforts to suffocate groups critical of progressives, by delaying what once was the swift, routine granting of tax-exempt status. One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey

But since definitions of an "in name only" marriage vary, such as "a marriage of convenience" or "a sexless marriage," and Maraniss failed to explain his claim, it is unclear what he was implying. KINGSTON - More than 150 years after European colonial powers abolished slavery, a coalition of Caribbean nations is considering legal action to seek a formal apology and monetary compensation. Caribbean leaders meeting next week in St. Vincent are expected to study a broad legal outline for the reparations claim prepared by a British law firm. The subject of reparations has simmered in the Caribbean for many years and opinions are divided. Some see reparations as delayed justice, while others see it as an empty claim and a distraction from modern social problems in Caribbean societies. Slavery ended throughout the Caribbean
