Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice sees ‘new energy’ behind push for comprehensive immigration reform

| Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Monday said there is more energy behind the push for immigration reform now than there was during the 2007 reform attempt under the Bush administration. During a conference call detailing the formation of the Bipartisan Policy Center Immigration Task Force — set to be co-chaired by Rice, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry G. Cisneros, former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, and former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell — Rice suggested the 2007 reform effort failed in part because there was no gas left in the White House’s tank.

Comments: It´s all well and good that she gives the example of that she´s seen foreign students at Stanford who can succeed and then go back to their home countries. What about the millions and millions more illegals who are extremely poor and uneducated and will do nothing but drag down the country by receiving endless freebies from the government?? She also doesn´t feel that the border security has to be done first. This is just not going to end well.

As always it depends on how one defines comprehensive immigration reform.

Comprehensive immigration reform seems to always just mean ´´a path to citizenship´´. I see nothing comprehensive about it: Everything else is a vague ´secure the borders´ mumbo-jumbo with no specifics on how things will be different this time around. Reagan was hoodwinked in 1986 (or maybe not) and it would be the same in 2013.
The only way I could go for a very restricted residency for current illegals (no allowance for further chain immigration, no eligibility for Medicare etc.) is the prior PASSAGE of a constitutional amendment ending birthright citizenship (and finally putting us in line with the other developed nations).

If you let democrats/liberals be the only ones to act on this, they will control the "reform".

The problem in 2007 was Reid. Kyl-Kennedy was a good framework but it needed work. It should have either gone to committee or had an open amendment process on the floor of the Senate. Instead Reid moved for cloture.

Yes, immigration reform. Reform of the tax code. Reform of perjury. Reform of labor laws. Reform of laws prohibiting fraudulent documents. Reform of customs law. Reform, reform, reform is Beltway speak for we´re going to give these illegal guests a pass for all the crimes they´ve broken over the years because the Gimmeecrats need more voters.

COMPREHENSIVE, no matter what the issue, is a code word for a whole bunch of stuff no one wants. I could understand a bill to deal with those brought here by their parents, but only AFTER a small bill securing our borders with defined goals.

We need "comprehensivve" reform because no one is obeying or observing the laws we have now! Comprehensive is code for changing the laws to mirror the reality of what is occurring on the ground and acknowledging that we have failed to enforce the existing laws. We wouldn´t need to change anything if we enforced existing law, but because we can´t or won´t we must change the law so illegals are no longer illegal. I say Comprehensive Reform be damned!

Let´s call a spade a spade.
This has nothing to do with immigration reform.
This has everything to do with adding an extra 20,000,000 or so Demon-RAT voters -- especially in dependably Republican states like Texas.
And the fact that the Republicans are willing to help commit suicide by going along with this just shows that the Republican Party officially died on 11-6-2012!!!!!

Let´s go back to the last time the Congress enacted a comprehensive, all encompassing immigration law...the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 (Hart-Celler Act, INS, Act of 1965, Pub.L. 89–236), enforce it completely, exactly as written, with clearly defined rules for all immigrants, both the legal ones and those "out of status" who are in this country without official government permission, granted before entry.
After a "testing" period of a year, or perhaps six months and only if the backlog of applications have been cleared, there could be a "committee" to report on what portions have been "effective" and which portions need to be amended, and each and every amendment should be put to a vote.

BOSTON - A law enforcement official has told CBS News that an arrest has been made in the Boston Marathon bombings. The person has been taken into custody by federal marshals and will be in court Wednesday afternoon. Investigators made a “clear identification” of a suspect in the bombings, according to CNN, with surveillance video. Correspondent John King, a Boston native, said authorities have a clear video image of a “dark-skinned male” placing a bag at the second bomb site outside of the Forum restaurant on Boylston Street and then leaving the area before that explosion. Investigators believe they have identified a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, a source who has been briefed on the investigation told CNN´s John King exclusively. The breakthrough came from analysis of video from a department store near the site of the second explosion. Video from a Boston television station also contributed to the progress, said the source, who declined to be more specific but called it a significant development. Earlier, a federal law enforcement source with firsthand knowledge of the investigation told CNN that a lid to a pressure cooker thought to have

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) on Tuesday proposed legislation that would require hospitals to maintain a minimum nurse-to-patient ratio at all times, and allow the government to audit and penalize hospitals that fail to comply with this rule. Boxer said her bill, S. 739, is meant to help address the nation´s shortage of nurses, and would also ensure patients get the care they need while in the hospital. "I am proud to introduce legislation that will help save the lives of countless patients by improving the quality of care in our nation’s hospitals," Boxer said Tuesday.

Tea Party favorite and second-term Rep. Tim Huelskamp is among the most recent to express concern, saying Tuesday that Boehner “assured us” that he´d seek a majority Republican coalition before proceeding on controversial bills. “Why do we have the majority if we don’t do what the majority wants?”

Fox News has learned of at least three suspicious packages in two separate Capitol Hill office buildings, compounding security concerns in the wake of the letter incidents and the Boston bombing, which the FBI has said

President Barack Obama has said he doesn´t believe North Korea can fit a nuclear warhead on a missile, casting strong doubt on an alarming assessment disclosed last week by the Pentagon´s intelligence arm. And he warned the young North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that weeks of threats against the United States and South Korea had only served to isolate the regime further. Asked in an NBC News interview whether North Korea could put a nuclear weapon on a ballistic missile, Obama said, "Based on our current intelligence assessments, we do not think that they have that capacity."

The immigration bill senators introduced Wednesday bans racial profiling by federal law enforcement officers in most routine encounters, such as traffic stops. Under current federal law and court precedents, racial discrimination is illegal — but there is no specific ban on racial profiling by federal officers. But buried inside the 844-page Senate immigration bill is a section specifically prohibiting the use of race or ethnicity as a factor in “routine or spontaneous law enforcement decisions, such as ordinary traffic stops.” Still, that language already represents a compromise. An earlier draft of the bill, reviewed by The Washington Times,

Friends and allies of Baroness Thatcher expressed ‘surprise and disappointment’ last night as it emerged President Obama is not planning to send any serving member of his administration to her funeral. Whitehall sources have revealed that the U.S. delegation at tomorrow’s service in St Paul’s Cathedral will be led by two Reagan era secretaries of state: James Baker and George Shultz. Though President Obama himself had not been expected to attend, there had been speculation that he would be represented either by Vice President Joe Biden or wife Michelle. Protocol: President Obama declined to send a high-level delegation to Wednesday´s funeral of Britain´s Margaret Thatcher. It´s a measure of how little he values the special relationship — and a sign of his own smallness. Back in more gracious times, vice presidents routinely attended funerals of foreign dignitaries. As such, the presence of Vice President Joe Biden — if not Obama himself — would seem fitting for as significant a U.S. ally as the late Prime Minister Thatcher, if not out of warmth of feeling, then simply to represent the U.S.´ gratitude. In light of the explosions that have rocked Boston on Patriots’ Day, during the city’s annual marathon, NBC reporter Luke Russert took to Twitter to speculate that today’s horrific events could possibly be related to the 1993 government siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas — an incident often attached to conversations about “right-wing terrorism” and anti-government violence. “I was at Fenway Park w my dad and @mikebarnicle during Waco which was on Patriots Day in 1993. Authorities on Tuesday revealed little new information about the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon, the most high-profile bombing on U.S. soil in more than a decade and a tragedy that presents a new test for President Obama. Obama, like all Americans, is standing by, waiting for answers as to who planted two bombs improvised from pressure cookers at the finish line of the storied race, and why. Three Americans were killed in Monday´s attack and more than 170 others were injured. "Anytime bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror," Obama said,

As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.

Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), is threatening to back an election challenge against Sen. Jeff Flake if the Arizona Republican votes against legislation to expand background checks. At a Christian Science Monitor breakfast on Tuesday, Kelly said he would back an opponent to Flake if the "right candidate" was available and if the senator failed to support a background check bill, according to reports. Flake, who is not up for reelection until 2018, has been close to Kelly and Giffords. But Kelly said the issue of control trumped their ties.
