Salt subtly trimmed from many foods amid campaign

| NEW YORK -- Salt has quietly been slipping out of dozens of the most familiar foods in brand-name America, from Butterball turkeys to Uncle Ben´s flavored rice dishes to Goya canned beans. A Kraft American cheese single has 18 percent less salt than it did three years ago. (Snip) A squirt of Heinz ketchup is 15 percent less salty. Their manufacturers are among 21 companies that have met targets so far in a voluntary, New York City-led effort to get food manufacturers and restaurateurs to lighten up on salt to improve Americans´ heart health,

Comments: Elsewhere Bloomie was cajoling food manufacturers and restaurants to do this. Here it is clear that what they did was voluntary. Bloomie taking credit? Wouldn´t be the first politician...

This is being done in tandem with slipping dozens of ounces of quantity out of thousands of food products in a subtle attempt to substantially raise prices by reducing content without getting caught.

The incidence of thyroid disease is increasing exponentially in areas where salt is being severely limited, like NYC, because when salt is limited, so is the iodine that was added to salt many many years ago.
Iodine is proven to aid in the prevention of thyroid disease. After its mandated addition to salt in this country, incidence of thyroid disease become much more rare.
Iodine also helps to protect from radiation poisoning, something that with lax borders and an administration that doesn´t care about national security, could become an issue in this country.

The way I understand it, there has never been a study showing any relation between salt intake and health risks. It is one of those things that the "foodies" latch onto and propogate until it becomes "common knowledge".

Scientific American printed an aticle stating definitely that excess salt intake is NOT harmful.
Only people with kidney problems or congestive heart failure need to worry about salt consumption.

Gay marriage is an issue of equality that fulfills America’s founding principles, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said during Wednesday’s press briefing. Earnest was responding to a reporter who asked whether President Obama feels his stance on gay marriage has “cleared the way” for others to support it publicly, noting Sen. Portman’s decision to support gay marriage earlier this month after his son announced he was gay.

Ruth C. Amen, a longtime office manager of Gulf to Bay Realty, a Boca Grande business, is now facing embezzlement charges after a surprise birthday party for her boss backfired into a paper trail of fraudulent transactions, according to a news release from the Lee County Sheriff´s Office. The 46-year-old Boca Grande woman was reportedly solely responsible for handling the company´s finances such as billing and payroll. It was Amen´s decision to pay for a surprise birthday bash for one of her bosses -- without permission -- that brought the fraudulent transactions to light.

n a story produced jointly with NPR, ProPublica.org, that new tax-exempt investigative-journalism outfit, puts forward what sounds like a smart proposal for improving the efficiency of the federal government: Imagine filing your income taxes in five minutes--and for free. You´d open up a pre-filled return, see what the government thinks you owe, make any needed changes and be done. The miserable annual IRS shuffle, gone. (Snip)So why hasn´t it become a reality? For two reasons, as it turns out. There is a plausible public-spirited argument against it and a venal interest group working to thwart it.

To put it plainly, the press briefing intending to indicate how President Barack Obama thinks about Israel on the eve of his trip here was a combination of fantasy and insult. It is likely that the Obama administration made such statements for show — to persuade the Arabic-speaking world that the United States is striving for peace, is not acting like a puppet (or should one say “ally”?) of Israel, and is using its influence to change Israeli policy even as it does nothing of the sort. As proof that Obama isn’t going to do anything,

When Benedict XVI was pope, the New York Times ran a scurrilous, distortion-infested campaign intended to link the former Joseph Ratzinger with the awful abuse scandals that have so harmed the Catholic Church. These pieces were manifestly dishonest and substance-free when you read them through. But the Times editors know most people don’t read the articles — they read the headlines and the first paragraph. So this morning, the pseudo-journalists at the Times began their campaign of lies against the new pope, Francis, under the damning (and damnable) headline: “Starting a Papacy, Amid Echoes of a ‘Dirty War’”:

Project Survival´s Cat Haven resumed regular operations, including guided tours, with the consent of the family of Dianna Hanson, founder Dale Anderson said at a news conference. The remarks, in a televised speech hours before Mr. Karzai´s meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, capped a series of confrontations between the Afghan president and the U.S. over his demands to assert Afghan sovereignty and curtail American military operations. Abortion clinic employee Sherry West described an incident which "really freaked (her) out" and related to the jury how she heard a child who was born alive following an abortion scream.

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million.

The state of California is reportedly considering legislation that would force group insurance policies to provide infertility treatment for gay and lesbian couples. Two men who have sex with each other for a year and do not produce a baby would be considered “infertile” under the proposed legislation. So would two women having sex. Since biology does not allow those without a uterus to conceive or those without a penis to impregnate, every year-long gay couple in California would potentially be covered by this new provision of California law.
