Bloomberg Cajoles 21 Companies

Breitbart´s Big Government, by Warner Todd Huston

On Monday, February 11, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that he had succeeded in cajoling 21 companies to remove more salt from some food products. Companies such as Butterball, Heinz, Starbucks, Oscar Mayer, and Kraft Foods have committed to taking more sodium out of products ranging from popcorn, to cold cuts, to breakfast sandwiches. Bloomberg announced that 21 companies out of 24 agreed to the changes. "These companies have demonstrated their commitment to removing excess sodium from their products and to working with public health authorities toward a shared goal -- helping their customers lead longer,

And little Bloomie knows what "excess salt" is?

First of all, it is different for everyone. The salt limit is an individual call. 2300 mg/day is considered "safe" though many are limited to less due to hypertension.

All food containers bear Sodium content numbers expressed in either mgs or a percentage of that 2300mg daily limit.

When do people take responsibility for their own health, read labels, avoid junk food which is loaded with salt, and cook fresh foods so that they can control the salt? Not any time soon. That´s a lotta work...

I find myself having to fall to my knees daily and thanking whatever powers that be - that I got the hell out of that madhouse after college. I lived way too close to Gracie Manor to put up with the current jackass in charge, and they´d probably object if I ´curbed my dog´ on the Mayor´s shoes...

PS. The irony is that all the chichi restaurants, bakeries and cooking magazines are currently pushing salted caramel. Candy, cakes, cookies, frostings on cakes, even a salted caramel pineapple upside down cake.

Nice try, Bloomie!

Yesterday on Rush, a caller said he´s been asking his liberal friends, "what are your limits?" The caller said the libs generally dodge the question. Rush said that´s because liberals don´t have any limits. So, do New Yorkers have any limits? Rhetorical question, I suppose.

Pinky is completely underestimating the role salt plays in establishing the taste of food. Take too much salt out and you have a tasteless product that nobody will consume. People are savvy enough to taste a product, declare "needs salt" and reach for the salt shaker.

The helicopter was shot down by insurgents. During the event organized by a group called Freedom Watch,

Boston and Massachusetts law enforcement officials confirmed Thursday that federal agents left them in the dark on the growing warning signs about Tamerlan Tsarnaev in the run-up to the Boston Marathon bombing. Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis, in testimony on Capitol Hill, said his officers on a joint terrorism task force were never told about an explicit warning from the Russian government or about Tsarnaev´s travel to the Chechnya region last year. Davis said he would have liked to have known about that activity, and that it "absolutely" would have merited a second look at Tsarnaev.

Yesterday´s dramatic congressional testimony about the deadly Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attacks on U.S. interests in Benghazi, Libya convincingly corroborated what was widely reported within days of the attack: that senior American officials on the ground knew immediately, despite the Obama administration´s storyline to the contrary, that the assault did not arise out of a "spontaneous" demonstration outside the U.S. Consulate in protest of an obscure YouTube trailer of a homemade anti-Islam movie called Innocence of Muslims. Republican lawmakers, who have spent months seeking to tie President Obama to last year’s deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, are increasingly focusing their probe on a new target: former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton. The GOP-led investigation of the Sept. 11, 2012, assaults that killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three others now centers heavily on the State Department and whether officials there deliberately misled the public about the nature of the assault. Three State Department officials are scheduled to testify before a House committee on Wednesday about the Benghazi attack and its aftermath.
