| For the 3,458th time in its history, the country has honored another of its magnificent military men and women with the Medal of Honor. Army Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha. Romesha´s citation and description of his gallantry in combat in Afghanistan are below. He is the fourth living recipient from the nation´s combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Besides a lifetime of honor as a hero, the Medal carries other perquisites.

But it was in the confines of the White House itself that SSGt Romesha performed his most distinguished act of bravery and self-sacrifice, which was to stand at attention before the greatest enemy America has, you-know-who, to receive the nation´s highest honor in the name of his fallen comrades. SSgt Romesha, you have a lot more courage than I have because I could not have done that.

However, the enemy was "..occupying the high ground on all four sides of the complex.."
Perhaps some more knowledgeable folks here can verify that we´d put a complex in what appears to be a dangerous location and not control the high ground.
Or are we adopting a "tethered goat" approach?

Despite the endorsement of President Obama, Robin Kelly easily won election Tuesday night in a special House election to represent Illinois´ troubled Second Congressional District. The sprawling urban-suburban district, containing Chicago´s ugly South Side, was formerly represented by Jesse Jackson Jr., who like a number of Illinois politicians will be residing in a federal penitentiary for a while. In fact, the last three incumbents of the Second District´s seat have moved on to prison cells, as have some recent governors. But that’s probably coincidence.

President Obama was on again Monday about gun laws, not enforcing the existing ones. But getting some new ones, any new ones so he can claim some kind of political victory after all of the promises and vows he made in the emotional days last December. But Obama wasn´t working on the senators from his own party who will actually determine the fate of these measures. That would be political leadership. No, Obama was out of town again, up in Hartford for a photo op with Connecticut legislators and some Newtown families.

It´s a good thing this column is available online, so that residents of Memphis, New Orleans and Riverside, California can learn how unsafe their city is without having to venture outside. Those are the bottom three metropolitan areas where residents said they felt least safe walking alone at night in their neighborhood. From the safety of their little work cubicles somewhere, the number gnomes over at the Gallup organization have been accumulating data on perceived human well-being as part of their polling calls on many subjects. From that data comes the 50 most and least safe cities.

From up here, 240 miles above Broadway, New York City can look like a pretty nice place. No traffic. No garbage. No smells. No crime. And no nanny Napoleons issuing edicts over spices, soft drinks and cups. In a swift and strange reversal, Obama administration officials Thursday rushed to play down their own recent announcements of defensive U.S. military movements in response to threats and provocations from North Korea. Remember how since-demoted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said we´d have to pass the massive ObamaCare health law to find out what´s in it? Well, now three years later that´s happening and a lot of people are not liking what they see. Remember how ObamaCare was going to save you money? Not going to happen. Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." In a stunning end to one of the most aggressively unsuccessful tenures in retail history, JCPenney (JCP) last night announced that CEO Ron Johnson would be leaving effective immediately. Myron Ullman, Johnson´s predecessor at JCPenney, takes office as CEO. When Johnson was initially wooed by JCPenney, it was to serve as CEO with Ullman as Chairman. In January 2012, Ullman was unceremoniously removed from the board. Gone with Ullman was any control the Board of Directors had over Ron Johnson and his control of JCPenney resources.

The state of California is reportedly considering legislation that would force group insurance policies to provide infertility treatment for gay and lesbian couples. Two men who have sex with each other for a year and do not produce a baby would be considered “infertile” under the proposed legislation. So would two women having sex. Since biology does not allow those without a uterus to conceive or those without a penis to impregnate, every year-long gay couple in California would potentially be covered by this new provision of California law.
